This game is based on Mattel's Masters of the Universe. It would be nothing without the many people involved in creating the brand and everything connected to it. I've tried to acknowledge everyone that I know had a part but there's bound to be omissions. Thanks to everyone involved. A brand as large as this is not easy to wrap one's head around and while there's only one writer of this game most of the information here was originally collected by fans and shared on various websites, mailing lists and forums. I owe a great gratitude to all those people and I've tried to credit everyone but there might be people I've neglected to mention. • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power As Queer Monomyth
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power as Queer Monomyth By Paul Thomas* ORCID: 0000-0002-5596-7951 Scheduled to be published as: Thomas, Paul. “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power as Queer Monomyth.” Journal of Popular Culture, vol. 54, no. 5, 2021. Abstract In this essay, the author considers the animated television program She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018-20) and argues two main things: First, that the She-Ra reboot can be read as monomythic, and second, that it employs the monomyth while also queering normative understandings of heroic gender and sexuality. The end result is a critical remix that stars a hero—Adora—who can be understood as both queer and monomythic. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power thus stands out from the rest of the pack, serving as a shining example for writers wanting to “rehabilitate” Campbell’s monomyth in our increasingly queer, feminist, and intersectional world. Keywords Gender theory, LGBT, Myth, Popular culture, animation * Paul Thomas is a library specialist at the University of Kansas ([email protected]) as well as a student in the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program in the School of Library and Information Management, Emporia State University ([email protected]). In 1949, the comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell published The Hero with a Thousand Faces, in which he argued that “the standard path of the … adventure of the hero is a magnification of the formula represented in the rites of passage: separation-initiation-return: which might be named the nuclear unit of the monomyth” (J.

  • She Ra and the Princesses of Power: Typing (Spoilers About Season 3 Included)
She Ra and the princesses of power: typing (spoilers about season 3 included) the rebellion The Best Friend Squad Adora/She-Ra : ESI the character of Adora is very comparable to the MCU’s Captain America as well in it’s ability as in her psychology. Both are hero guided by human compassion (white ethic), competent leader (black sensing) and with a clear weak black intuition (her general black and white morality and her fear of the worst outcomes in the 4th episode of season 2 is quite exemplar of it). LSI would have be possible due to her strategic abilities but her choice of the rebellion against the Horde (a clear Beta faction) indicate that she is not. Her general temper of Ixxj over any other temperaments and her obvious of black sensing ( how she admire Huntara for her brutal strength and her roguish temper in season 3 impede all possibility of EII or LII for this character). Glimmer and Bow: both ESEs Glimmer and Bow are very similar to each-other, both are very expansive and tend to involve emotionally others in a positive way with easiness. You can compare their ESE’s positive black ethics fueled by peaceful white sensing with Catra’s and Shadow weaver charismatic but violent black ethic fueled by a valuing of aggressive black sensing. In the episode 7 of season 1 their valuing of white sensing (relaxation oriented function) is explicit when they show their loving of relaxation in water of Glimmer’s aunt castle. None of them is particularly future oriented and don’t understand the concern of Adora about a long term plan (indicating their vulnerable white intuition).

  • Morphological Conservation in Human-Animal Hybrids in Science Fiction and Fantasy Settings: Is Our Imagination As Free As We Think It Is?

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. The question of whether human imagination knows no boundaries or is, alternatively, constrained by conscious or unconscious cognitive templates is a key issue in defining human mind. We try here to ad- dress this extremely large question by focusing on one particular element of imaginary creations, the spe- cific case of human-animal hybrids. Human-animal hybrids are common inhabitants of human imaginary spaces, being regularly encountered across numerous mythologies, as well as in modern popular culture. If human imagination was unconstrained, it would be expected that such hybrid creatures would display roughly half human and half animalistic features. Using several different popular science fiction and fan- tasy settings, we conducted an analysis of the morphological traits of human-animal hybrids, both ana- tomical and phenotypic. Surprisingly, we observed extremely high conservation of human morphological traits in human-animal hybrids, with a contrasting high use of phenotypic (“cosmetic”) alterations, and with highly stereotyped patterns of morphological alterations.

  • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Seasons 1-5
MEDIA REVIEWS She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Seasons 1-5 Adam McLain SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER. Seasons 1-5. DreamWorks Animation, Netflix, 2018-2020. Riding the success of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe show and toy line (1982– 1988), the children’s toy company Mattel sought to capitalize on its sword and sorcery moment by introducing a female-focused toy line, Princess of Power, centered around He-Man’s sister—Adora in her human form, She-Ra in her empowered form. From 1985 to 1987, She-Ra fought the Evil Horde, its leader Hordak, and her nemesis Catra through twenty-two action figures, thirteen comics, several children’s books, and a two-season animated cartoon series created by J. Michael Straczynski and Larry DiTillio. Throughout the ensuing thirty years, Adora/She-Ra would appear numerous times in toy lines and cameos, but she would never be as popular—nor, one could say, as marketed—as her brother, Adam/He-Man. In 2017, Netflix and DreamWorks Animation announced their plans to reboot the franchise as She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, with Noelle Stevenson, an award-winning author, helming the project as executive producer and showrunner. This move came as part of a series of repackaging of old intellectual property for new audiences (e.g., DreamWorks/Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender). As showrunner, Stevenson chose to pay homage to the past show while inventing a new future for it and for animated fantasy children’s shows. Stevenson’s direction chose to focus on diversity and representation, reimagining all the characters to portray more LGBTQ+ characters and characters of color onscreen.

  • (1985) and New (2018) She-Ra Animated Series
Images of evil: Comparison of main villain representation in old (1985) and new (2018) She-Ra animated series Teija Tulinen Bachelor’s thesis English Philology Faculty of Humanities University of Oulu Spring 2020 Abstract This thesis delves into the characterization of the main villain in the cartoon series She-Ra: Princess of Power (1985) and its new rebooted version, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018). This research has been conducted by analysing the main villain named Hordak in both series using the same baselines, such as designs and dialogue choices with references to applied character theory and affect control theory and by comparing the results. The analysis is limited and does not attempt to make definitive conclusions, but it draws some assumptions based on the results on how social expectations towards children’s media might have changed during the years, and how comparing rebooted series with its original counterpart in terms of one character might illustrate that. The results show that the vast differences in the villain presentation between the two series are likely to illustrate a change in media trends as well as social expectations on what kind of content is suitable and profitable to target towards children, with a possibility of greater selection of target audiences for the new shows.
