This is based on the setup we discussed (podium with mic and mic in audience). The rental cost for the facility is higher than what you were quoted for space at the Union but the security costs will be substantially lower. We have put a hold on the Phillips Center on September 12 for your event. We still have a hold on the Grand Ballroom at the Reitz Union that I would like to release if you are comfortable moving to the Phillips Center.

This report is sign that our economy is getting stronger by the day. I want to emphasize that most of the jobs this month that we're seeing in the statistics represent workers who have been hired to complete the 2010 census. (END VIDEO CLIP) BAIER: Two stops today. President Obama today earlier in Maryland talking about the unemployment rate dropping to 9.7, but the markets tanked on that news because almost all of the jobs were created were for the census, as he talked about. He's down in the Gulf region right now and he has cancelled a planned trip to Australia and to Indonesia because of the Gulf oil spill. He is dealing with a lot. How is he doing? Let's bring in our panel, Fred Barnes, Executive Editor of "The Weekly Standard," Juan Williams, news analyst for Na- tional Public Radio, and syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer. Not to mention, Fred, that the national debt is increasing, over $13 trillion.

Nutter, D.A. Honors Director ______________________________ Date MEDIA AND AMERICAN PERCEPTIONS 3 Abstract This study seeks to understand the correlation between the average American's understanding of a Muslim and the portrayal of Muslims in relevant news events. After defining terms and reviewing previous literature, two news sources will be used to compare various historically-significant events. The major events to be studied are the September 11 attacks of 2001, the American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the “Arab Spring”. Precedent literature shall be used to determine a baseline understanding of common American perceptions of Muslims. From the baseline understandings of American perceptions and the established definitions regarding Muslims, a connection will be drawn between the claims of media sources and the American perceptions. MEDIA AND AMERICAN PERCEPTIONS 4 The Effects of Media on the American Perceptions of Islam from 2001-2012 This study shall seek to establish a connection between the ways in which mainstream media represents Muslims in pertinent social issues and the average American’s perception thereof through comparing the results of public opinion polls and the development of news trends and stories regarding American interactions with Muslims.

Democratic Communique 19, Spring 2004 49 4 News as Spectacle: The Political Economy and Aesthetics of 24/7 News James Compton James R. Compton is Assistant Professor in the faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario. He received his Ph.D. in Communication at Simon Fraser University and is a fonncr reporter and editor with Canadian Prcss/Broadcast News in Vancouvcr, British Columbia. He is the author of the forthcoming book: The Inlegrated News Spectacle: A Political Ecol1omv ofeultural PcrjiJrmal1ce. He is also co-editing a book on the political economy of media convergcnce and journalism for Lexington Books. On the surface, it would appear that large-scale media spectacles based on celebrities, such as the Monica Lewinsky scandal or the mourning of Princess Diana, have little in common with the 1991 Gulf War or the 2001 September II'h terrorist attacks in the United States. The former are easily dismissed as tabloid excess, while the latter constitute what journalists like to call hard news stories par excellence. It doesn't get more serious than war and terror. Media coverage of illicit sex and tabloid tragedy are widely regarded as the nadir of professional journalism. War and the threat of terror on the other hand, provide the news media with opportunities to redeem themselves and reproduce the legitimising narrative of independent truth-seekers. [wish to complicate this separation. I argue, instead, that the reporting of hard news and the tabloid variety share a commonality: both are constitutive of, and are constructed by, the economic competition among 24-hour news organizations, which include both broadcast and online organizations.
