Insider tip

Aer a visit to the fair, make your way to the Jarar Family Kunj on the banks of the river. The roof top of the Kunj provides birds-eye views of the fairgrounds, temples and bathing ghats. It allows one to sit back and soak up the atmosphere, whilst drinking the local kular tea. The views of the sunset are spectacular and bathe the temples in a beautiful saron glow. The perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle all around, says Inderjeet Rathod from our Destination Knowledge Centre who has experienced the Bateshwar Fair rst-hand.

During your stay at the Chambal Safari Lodge don't forget to try their Khad Meat. A whole leg of lamb cooked in a 2 feet deep pit with coal re embers at the bo, Khad meat is a local specialty, much rened over the years, but owes it origin to the Baghis' (rebels) turbulent existence in the behad (ravines) of Chambal. The much maligned and notorious Chambal behad can proudly lay claim to this ingenious recipe for cooking meat, creating a delicacy in the most hostile environs. When a re could not be lit without fear of discovery by the police and death by the bullet, when each meal could well be your last and when rebellion against the system was the highest mark of honour, says Kuntil Baruwa from our Destination Knowledge Centre who has stayed at the Chambal Safari Lodge and explored the area.
