Fact you need to know:

The war began in July 1812.

The Natives were allies with the British.

General William Hull led American army from Detroit into Canada.

Hull surrendered Detroit to the British.

The British controlled Lake Erie.

Fact you need to know:

The British and their N.A. allies tried to pull back from the Detroit area. General Harrison cut them off. In the Battle of Thames, famous Native American leader Tecumseh was killed.

Before Tecumseh's death, he had hopes of creating a large scale Confederation of with other Native tribes.

By 1813, the Americans had won some victories, and their morale was boosted.

The U.S. had a powerful navy which included three frigates or warships (fastest in the world).

The Battle of Horseshoe Bend was led by Andrew Jackson (our 7th President)

Jackson's forces killed more than 550 Creeks.

The defeat forced the Creeks to give up much of their land.

After the conflict between Britain and France ended, Britain was able to send more troops to fight.

In 1814, British ships landed in the Chesapeake Bay. The militia could not hold back their forces and the British proceeded to D.C.

The Capital and the president's mansion were among the buildings burned by the British.

They left the city and sailed to Baltimore.

The British were overpowered and did not enter the city.

After the Battle of Lake Champlain, the British realized that the war was too costly and unnecessary.

American and British representatives signed a peace agreement on December 1814.

The treaty was called the "Treaty of Ghent"

Before news of the treaty reached the US, one was fought.

The Battle of New Orleans.

The Brits moved to New Orleans. Andrew Jackson and his troops were waiting for them.

January 8, 1815 - British troops advanced, Jackson's men hid behind bales of hay, the Brits were an easy target in the open fields.

Hundreds of Brits were killed.

Jackson became a war hero and later our 7th President of the U.S.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is a poem written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key and is the national anthem of the United States of America. Key, a 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, wrote it after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland by British ships in Chesapeake Bay during the War of 1812.
