MIN. BID AUCTION & A LYNNE RANDELL STRANGER IN MY ARMS CBS BA-221387 VG 200 (AUSTRALIAN) ++ Surely the real and true ORIGINAL for this Torch anthem? Logic dictates that Aussie girl Lynne would have her disc put out in the land of her birth. For sure this has to be the rarest issue out of U.S., U.K. and Australian. B PAUL SINDAB SINCE I MET YOU (E.P.) COLUMBIA 1799 M- 350 (FRENCH) Staying with the foreign releases and the ULTIMATE in French soul collectables. This 4-track E.P. features ‘You Dropped Your Candy In The Sand’, ‘Do Whatcha Wanna Do’, ‘Since I Met You’ and ‘I’m Uptight’ – all placed within a quite superb full-colour picture sleeve. 20 years ago a picture book of French soul releases was issued and this one wasn’t even included, so rare is it. C SOLOMON KING THIS BEAUTIFUL DAY PARLOPHONE 8676 VG+ 100 (JAMAICAN) Making up a trio of non U.S./U.K. rarities is this West Indian release of a Torch monster. I mean, how many would have sold or even been manufactured? The original name of course, he changed it to Levi Jackson for a later release because that name sounded more in keeping with a soul record. D PATTI & THE EMBLEMS I’M GONNA LOVE YOU A KAPP 897 VG++ 1000 LONG, LONG TIME Ultra-rare black issue copy is one of the rarest issue copies around with only 3 or 4 known to be in collectors’ hands. If someone could tell me the top deejay that has one of these I’d like to know his or her name. In an age of multi-thousand pound Northern Soul records, this puts many much more expensive records to shame. E EDDIE SPENCER IF THIS IS LOVE (I’D ARC 1206 M- 200 RATHER BE LONELY) (CANADIAN) Amongst the very best of Canadian-only soul releases, a quite superb rendition of the Precisions’ song. Not surprising really as they shipped Mike Terry into Toronto (more likely the 5-hour car journey) from Detroit to arrange it all, or did they? Sounds like exactly the same backing track to me. As with all Canadian releases this must have been made in miniscule quantities with all of ‘em residing in the U.K. by now. F THE HIGH KEYS LIVING A LIE VERVE 10423 D VG++ 300 Amongst the superb Northern Soul output of this U.S. label, this High Keys disc stands amongst the best. And it crops up for sale far less than is generally realised as well. I’ve a cassette of Wigan Casino circa Autumn ’74 and amongst the ‘Footsees’ and Carmel Strings and Javells records, this one stands out like a beacon of common sense. Still sounds outstanding today. G JACKIE LEE DARKEST DAYS ABC 11146 WD M- 200 Surprised at us auctioning this one? Well for starters this is the kind of thing that has simply VANISHED from the States, even regular Mirwood ‘cheapies just don’t crop up there anymore. And in stone mint too. What’s more if we set-saled it we would have a hundred calls/emails/requests so, being true agents of democracy we offer it up to everyone. H ENCHANTMENTS I’M IN LOVE WITH YOUR FARO 620 D VG++ 200 DAUGHTER A 1965 Los Angeles release in the arena of what is known as Chicano Soul i.e. recorded by Spanish/Mexican Americans in East L.A. It’s the kind of tough area where your hotel receptionist will be behind a metal grille rather than an open desk, but it produced its own kind of ‘brown’ soul with groups like Thee Midniters and Majestics also offering up Northern gems. Played constantly to this day ‘I’m In Love With Your Daughter’ is still packing floors. I BETTY LLOYD I’M CATCHING ON BSC 401 M- 600 Out of Detroit, basically this record is a one-box, one-time scenario courtesy of Dave Withers 25 years ago. Although copies had turned up some years before Dave’s find, very very few have turned up in the U.S. since then revealing this one to be essentially a very rare disc. J MAJOR LANCE YOU DON’T WANT ME NO OKEH 7284 WD VG++ 250 MORE I saw the Major a couple of times in the seventies (but not at the Torch, I’m a bit too young for that), he was always backed by what appeared to be a bunch of hippies and I never saw him perform this one – his biggest Northern Soul sound. Then again, I’m fairly certain that the hippy band could never have recreated the sheer explosive power of this record, so maybe they did me a favour! K JERRY COOK I HURT ON THE OTHER CAPITOL 5981 D M- 200 SIDE A true gem of the Northern scene and for our money, better than Sidney Barnes’ (the co-writer) version on Blue Cat. A very authentic-looking boot was done of the issue. So cast doubt aside and get this green promo on the turntable! L SAM MOULTRIE I’LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU WARREN 108 WD! SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 PAULINE SHIVERS YOU’RE A DEVIL O-PEX 111 M- 15 Great-sider ‘Devil’ is a funky edged dancer and ‘Won’t You Come Back Home’ an excellent midtempo cut. 2 THE SALSOUL HOW HIGH SALSOUL 2096 M- 15 ORCHESTRA An excellent modern dancer hiding away, almost unknown, on the famous disco label. 3 LEE LaMONT I’LL TAKE LOVE BACK BEAT 542 M- 20 One of two fine Northern Soul sides of the famed label by this Texas Artists. 4 JOE TEX YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT DIAL 4033 M- 10 BABY The follow up to the revived ‘Show Me’ at Wigan is in much the same style. 5 THE REFLECTIONS TALKIN’ ABOUT MY GIRL GOLDEN M- 8 WORLD 15 Midtempo Detroit from the pens of Wylie, Gorman Hamilton sounds like their finest 45. His Tangerine records contain some fine dancers. This is one such. 10 SAM COOKE IT’S GOT THE WHOLE WORLD RCA VICTOR M- 20 SHAKIN’ 8539 WD One of Sam’s two Northern records – as you might expect its quality. Nice White promos too. SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2021 BERNARDINI DEAD AT 18 NAVARRO TO CHANGE 'NOT GUILTY' PLEA IN INTERNATIONAL DOPING SCANDAL By T.D. Thornton Barred trainer Jorge Navarro, the most notorious and prominent defendant in the international racehorse doping scandal that rocked the racing industry when the feds arrested 28 alleged conspirators in March 2020, has just been granted an Aug. 11 change-of-plea hearing at which he is expected to alter his initial "not guilty" plea from last year. This bombshell change in the case could mean a new pleading of "guilty" is in the pipeline for Navarro, perhaps as part of a sentencing bargain that has played out behind the scenes between federal prosecutors and defense attorneys. Within the past week, two other alleged co-conspirators-a veterinarian and a drug distributor-have either already changed their pleas to guilty or are expected to do so at an upcoming Bernardini | Darley photo hearing. Mary's mother, 82-year-old Polly Magro, and Elizabeth were at the centre when it was robbed on Monday morning. Picture: Adam McLean A group of Cringila community centre volunteers have been left shaken after two masked intruders robbed them of their hard-earned cash during a brazen and opportunistic Monday-morning attack. Volunteers at the not-for-profit George Cross Falcons Community Centre have told how they first thought the intrusion was "practical joke", before quickly realising the disguised duo's presence was something more sinister. About eight people were inside the community centre - preparing for a weekly seniors' lunch event - when two masked men entered via a door off Lake Avenue about 8.30am. "We were all doing our Monday morning chores ... we were buttering bread, making coffees and then two men walked in," office worker and volunteer Elizabeth Walker said. "We thought it was a joke. We really thought it was a practical joke because they came in, they were very composed and they were very softly spoken and that's why we didn't register what they were really here for." "It is a shocking thing because we don't deserve to have this happen to us. We are not people who make millions of dollars, we just make the money to provide the food for the people who come in on a Monday," Ms Walker said.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.
