SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2021 BERNARDINI DEAD AT 18 NAVARRO TO CHANGE 'NOT GUILTY' PLEA IN INTERNATIONAL DOPING SCANDAL By T.D. Thornton Barred trainer Jorge Navarro, the most notorious and prominent defendant in the international racehorse doping scandal that rocked the racing industry when the feds arrested 28 alleged conspirators in March 2020, has just been granted an Aug. 11 change-of-plea hearing at which he is expected to alter his initial "not guilty" plea from last year. This bombshell change in the case could mean a new pleading of "guilty" is in the pipeline for Navarro, perhaps as part of a sentencing bargain that has played out behind the scenes between federal prosecutors and defense attorneys. Within the past week, two other alleged co-conspirators-a veterinarian and a drug distributor-have either already changed their pleas to guilty or are expected to do so at an upcoming Bernardini | Darley photo hearing. Mary's mother, 82-year-old Polly Magro, and Elizabeth were at the centre when it was robbed on Monday morning. Picture: Adam McLean A group of Cringila community centre volunteers have been left shaken after two masked intruders robbed them of their hard-earned cash during a brazen and opportunistic Monday-morning attack. Volunteers at the not-for-profit George Cross Falcons Community Centre have told how they first thought the intrusion was "practical joke", before quickly realising the disguised duo's presence was something more sinister. About eight people were inside the community centre - preparing for a weekly seniors' lunch event - when two masked men entered via a door off Lake Avenue about 8.30am. "We were all doing our Monday morning chores ... we were buttering bread, making coffees and then two men walked in," office worker and volunteer Elizabeth Walker said. "We thought it was a joke. We really thought it was a practical joke because they came in, they were very composed and they were very softly spoken and that's why we didn't register what they were really here for." "It is a shocking thing because we don't deserve to have this happen to us. We are not people who make millions of dollars, we just make the money to provide the food for the people who come in on a Monday," Ms Walker said.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.
