The visionary behind the brand

To accomplish big things, I am convinced “ you must first dream big dreams. ” Born Conrad Nicholson Hilton, the man everyone When a deal on a bank fell through, young Connie came to know as ‘Connie’ started life in sun- spent the night at a cheap-and-cheerful hotel close drenched San Antonio in New Mexico where by. He saw how good business was at the hotel his father was a successful merchant and trader. and decided to use his $5,000 – together with the Growing up, Connie dreamt of becoming a banker, support of his friends – to buy it instead. This was and that’s what prompted him to move to Texas to to be the humble beginning of the Hilton empire. make a name for himself.

12 EARLY DAYS

After building a small chain of hotels in Texas from nothing, Connie found himself on the brink of losing them all more than once during the Great Depression. The only thing that kept the dream alive was his sheer determination; Hilton’s ambitions only grew, setting his sights on New York, Chicago, and eventually – the world.

The year 1921 saw another gruelling recession, but that didn’t stop Connie’s expansion across the US, which amounted to around $6,000 per month –more than $80,000 in today’s currency.

Connie was on a tireless mission to buy dilapidated hotels all over the state and bring them back to life, but his ambition eventually led him to actually build one of his own. He found the perfect location in Dallas, and that’s where he built the first real Hilton Hotel.

The Great Depression saw travel – and, consequently, the hospitality business – collapse. Around 80% of hotels in the US filed for bankruptcy or underwent foreclosure. Connie, however, did everything he could to keep doors open and rooms filled. Everyone in the business worked to save every possible penny, shutting down entire floors of some hotels, getting rid of phones to save fifteen cents here and there, and going without pay cheques, instead working for room and board to get them by. These hardships transformed into something of a GOING INTERNATIONAL blessing for Connie, because it meant that many hotels out there were up for sale on the cheap. In 1937, As Conrad gained renown, he developed a taste the young Hilton made his first forays beyond Texas, for international expansion. It wasn’t long before purchasing the Sir Francis Drake near Union Square he went to the Board to sort out an international in good old San Francisco. Next came Chicago, Los subsidiary: Hilton International, which happened Angeles, and New York. officially in 1948. Before he knew it, Hilton hotels had set up shop in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mexico City, , and a whole host of other cities, with each establishment working alongside and hiring locals.

The Hilton company gradually grew into the global presence we know it to be today. In 1964, the International branch shot out as a distinct public company, later acquired by Trans World Airlines. In 1986 United Airlines took the wheel, and one year later, the British Ladbroke Group assumed control, until 2006, when the US Hilton company merged with the rest of the global enterprises to consolidate its business across the globe •

Hilton Calling met with Angela Attard Fenech, Owner at Tumas Group, to learn more about Hilton’s beginnings in Malta and how Tumas Group came to be at the helm of Malta’s most luxurious hotel.

How did Tumas Group’s story with Hilton begin? Back in 1986, my late grandfather Tumas visited the grounds where Hilton Malta is currently situated and saw that the location offered massive potential for a hotel with the Hilton Brand. At the time he was interested in expanding Tumas Group’s share of the tourism market. Hilton was obviously very appealing as a brand, renowned for its class and luxury. And here we are over 30 years later!

How would you describe the past 30 years for Hilton Malta? We have worked very hard to create a unique experience for our guests - and that has involved implementing many changes. There have been 3 development phases over the past 20 years, brought about by a desire to innovate. The original Hilton premises were overhauled in 1996, when an investment of over €350 million resulted in a brand-new hotel with 329 rooms, the development of the Portomaso complex and the Marina. 54 GOING WITH THE FLOW

Though it goes by many names, fluid art is a form of abstract art that uses several media to create the illusion of movement. Fluid art visually captures movement created using a variety of paint media, such as ink, acrylic or resin. Instead of using a brush, the paint is poured, dripped and swirled over the canvas, mixing colours and consistency. Texture and flow can be manipulated by simply moving the canvas, moving the paint with a hair dryer, or using a blowtorch to create varying effects. An exercise in trial and error, Bel cites hours of research and experimentation with different colour palettes and techniques which have led her to her distinctive style.

BEL

A lover of dynamic media, whose work is a process of self discovery, Bel has caught the attention of art connoisseurs and thalassophiles alike. After studying Graphic Design in Milan at the Instituto Europeo Design IED, Bel has had a number of exhibitions over the years where she has been able to showcase her passion for art • X FACTOR ROCKS MALTA
