2018 - Famous Books & Authors

The theme ‘Famous Books and Authors’ has really opened up people’s imagination to get involved in the Carnival Weekend. We have Alice coming to Town from Wonderland for this year’s celebration, along with Squirrel Nutkin, the Gruffalo and all the animals from The Jungle Book. Roald Dahl will also be putting in an appearance with some of the characters he has created.

We have entries from more than a dozen local schools, the Poco Logo Samba Band, dancing troupes and marching bands plus many other carnival groups from across the region. We will also see The Very Hungry Caterpillar, produced through a series of Open Workshops in the Westmorland Shopping Centre hitting the streets alongside floats from Young Farmer‘s groups, Youth Clubs, Nurseries, Charities and Companies.

On Saturday the 16th we will again be holding a Carnival Street Party. There will be the opportunity to join arts workshops, see some of the procession sculptures and costumes as well as sampling the wares at the host of stalls at the Street Fair.

Between 5pm and 9pm, the Main Performance Stage will be buzzing with dance acts and music, with performances from Scrogans Run and this year’s headliners, Groove Train. the Team Kendal Torchlight Carnival is all about bringing together local families and communities, welcoming visitors and raising money for local charities. It helps put the area on the map as a place where people are welcoming, know how to have fun, work for a good cause and are creative.

It is a huge undertaking with up to 25,000 spectators on a Friday night, 1,200 participants in the procession and around 200 marshals and volunteers to help the event run smoothly. Last year around 15,000 people were involved in the Street Party.

Throughout the year a voluntary team work to organise the events of this weekend. Torchlight depends on everyone who is involved, whether organising supporting or attending.

Thank you for playing your part and making it a great celebration.

20 I opened a book

“I opened a book and in I strode. Now nobody can find me. I’ve left my chair, my house, my road, My town and my world behind me. I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring, I’ve swallowed the magic potion. I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king and dived in a bottomless ocean. I opened a book and made some friends. I shared their tears and laughter and followed their road with its bumps and bends To the happily ever after. I finished my book and out I came. The cloak can no longer hide me. My chair and my house are just the same, But I have a book inside me”

Julia Donaldson There’ll be dancing... dancing in the streets! We have The Very Hungry Caterpillar, we have fruits and meadow flowers. We have music, we have carnival costumes and that’s all you need for a carnival. But wait…..it’s not…….We need you!

The main road is closed and the town is shouting out for the fun from Friday evening to just keep on going. And that’s just what we plan. Come along and join us throughout the day we create our own mini carnival procession through the streets of Kendal – imagine a giant conga.

Come in fancy dress, bring your own musical instruments and your dance moves and let’s party through the street.

Street Fair Roll up roll up, come and join us at our creative street fair.

This year, we will once again be lining the streets with stalls. There will be lots of activities and workshops to take part in.

Kendal Torchlight Carnival has traditionally supported many local charities, and this year we are doubling our efforts! Not only have we supported out Charity Partners on Friday evening at the Carnival Procession, but we are going one step further this year to support more charities on Saturday at our Street Party.

So why not visit their stalls to find out more about what they do.
