Volume 3, Issue 1: May 2020 Soviet Intelligence on the Eve of the Great Patriotic War Gaël-Georges Moullec (Rennes School of Business and Sorbonne Paris Nord University) Studying Soviet intelligence has long been a problem. On the one hand, academics, should it be by ideology or conformity, have historically avoided the question, refusing to see the originality of these services and their central place in the power system set up by the Bolsheviks. On the other hand, journalists and former Western services personnel repeatedly stressed the omnipotence of the “Organs” and their essential role in the alleged communist “world plot.” This was done without explaining why this supposed power system proved so ineffectual during the German lightning attack of June 1941 or, again, at the time of the collapse of the USSR in 1991.1 Today, the debate has been revived. Russian archives were opened at the end of the twentieth century, some partially or temporary, and many previously secret documents were published—often at the instigation of the new Russian intelligence services. One of the things that has clearly emerged from the archives is that probably the most significant event that impacted the Soviet intelligence services was the physical consequences of the 1937–1939 purges within the Soviet intelligence services, which resulted in the disappearance of the most experienced personnel. After the purges, the Soviet services had lost a sturdy portion of its workforce but retained access to a significant flow of information. The inability of the services to provide the country’s leadership with a clear analysis of the political and military situation in Germany and the imminence of the June 22, 1941, attack was therefore linked to new work practices resulting from this “purification.” In what follows, we discuss these developments at length.

BoTSL#5 2013 JUN 10 12:30 PM Mike Sperlinger: SEVENTEEN TYPES OF AMBIGUITY This bulletin would like to grow up to be a New Yorker article. Alex.” Only Stirlitz could figure out that he had been conferred the rank of the Hero of the Soviet Union. On February 8, 2003, Vladimir Putin awarded the Order for Merit to the Fatherland, Class III, to the actor Vyacheslav Tikhonov. It was Tikhonov’s 75th birthday. Tikhonov had enjoyed a long career on stage and in film, but no one was under any illusions for what role he was receiving this honor — the same one, in fact, for which he had received a medal as a Hero of Socialist Labor from the Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev in 1982, which was already nine years after the fact. Tikhonov was synonymous with the role of Max Otto von Stirlitz — a.k.a.“Justas,” a.k.a. Maxim Maximovich Isaev, secret agent of Moscow Center — in the television series Seventeen Moments of Spring.

  • Stalinism Revisited Stalinism Revisited
CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK Stalinism Revisited Stalinism Revisited Stalinism Revisited brings together representatives of multiple generations to create a rich examination The Establishment of Communist Regimes in East-Central Europe of the study and practice of Stalinism. While the articles are uniformly excellent, the book’s signal contribution is to bring recent research from Eastern European scholars to an English-speaking audience. Thus the volume is not just a “state of the discipline” collection, in which articles are collected to reflect that current situation of scholarship in a given field; instead, this one includes cutting edge scholarship that will prompt more of the same from other scholars in other fields/subfields. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in understanding the technology of Stalinism in both StalinismStalinism thought and practice. Nick Miller Boise State University The Sovietization of post-1945 East-Central Europe—marked by the forceful imposition of the Soviet- type society in the region—was a process of massive socio-political and cultural transformation. Despite its paramount importance for understanding the nature of the communist regime and its RevisitedRevisited legacy, the communist take-over in East Central European countries has remained largely under- researched. Two decades after the collapse of the communist system,Stalinism Revisited brings together a remarkable international team of established and younger scholars, engaging them in a critical re-evaluation of the institutionalization of communist regimes in East-Central Europe and of the period of “high Stalinism.” Sovietization is approached not as a fully pre-determined, homogeneous, and monolithic transformation, but as a set of trans-national, multifaceted, and inter-related processes of large-scale institutional and ideological transfers, made up of multiple “takeovers” in various fields.

Journalism Research HERBERT VON HALEM VERLAG 2019, Vol. 2 (1), pp. 3-31 ISSN 2569-152X DOI: 10.1453/2569-152X-12019-4645-en Papers Michael Meyen A contribution to the history of the subject in the Post-War period Abstract: This paper investigates the way politics, media practice, and academ- ia interact using the example of journalism studies in the early GDR. How do the social constraints and the requirements of editorial offices influence teaching and research? Based on Bourdieu’s field theory and on records, contemporary witness reports, and publications from the training facility in Leipzig, the paper shows that the logic of the academic field and the expertise developed there overruled interventions by the ruling Party. With journalistic practice reliant on staff from Leipzig, its signals were more important than what the SED leadership wanted. However, journalism studies in the GDR was only developed by the students of the first generation of professors. The way the subject was structured, with a focus on style, journalistic methods, genres, and the working process in editorial offices, was a world apart from the social sciences focus of communication studies in West Germany. This also made it impossible to integrate the two after 1989. 1. Subject of interest, theoretical basis, and sources Using the example of journalism in the early GDR, this paper investigates the way politics, media practice, and academia interact. How do the social constraints and the requirements of editorial offices influence the structure of teaching and
