JUNE 28, 2020 FOCUS OF OUR RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE IS MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

ESPECT IFE R L

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

BEATITUDES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

BLESSED ARE YOU who take time to listen to difficult speech, for you help us to know that if we persevere we can be understood.

BLESSED ARE YOU who walk with us in public places, and ignore the stares of strangers, for in your friendship we feel good to be ourselves.

BLESSED ARE YOU who never bid us to "hurry up" and, more blessed, you who do not snatch our tasks from our hands to do them for us, for often we need time rather than help.

BLESSED ARE YOU who stand beside us as we enter new and untried ventures, for our unsured- ness will be outweighed by the times when we surprise ourselves and you.

BLESSED ARE YOU who ask for our help and realize our giftedness for our greatest need is to be needed.

BLESSED ARE YOU who help us with the graciousness of Christ, for often we need the help we cannot ask for.

BLESSED ARE YOU when, by all things, you assure us that what makes us individuals is not our particular disability or difficulty but our beautiful God-given personhood which no handicapping condition can confine.

REJOICE AND BE EXCEEDINGLY GLAD for your understanding and love have opened doors for us to enjoy life to its full and you have helped us believe in ourselves as valued and gifted people.

Thank you for your continued support. 4 June 28, 2020 Dear Parishioners,

My name is Linda Doyle and I am the Director of the R.C.I.A. process at St. Peter. R.C.I.A. stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a process by which the Catholic Church educates those want- ing to explore the Catholic faith and, ultimately, brings those who desire to be Catholic into the Church. RCIA is specifically for:

Adults who are unbaptized and want to explore the Catholic faith;

Adults who have been baptized in another Christian faith tradition and want to learn more about the Catholic faith; or

Baptized Catholics who have not yet received the sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation, and desire to be in full communion with the Catholic Church.

We will begin instructing our next RCIA group in September. As I look toward that, I have two favors to ask of all our parishioners this summer. First, I ask that you to please pray for our RCIA process, and specifically, to ask the Holy Spirit to bless our parish with new catechumens (those not yet baptized) and candidates (those who are baptized in another faith tradition, but desire to be in full communion with the Catholic Church) this fall. Second, I encourage you exercise to your role as a baptized Catholic and extend an invitation to a friend, a co-worker, neighbor, PSR or school parent who is not Catholic, to join the R.C.I. A. process this year. Especially, if he or she has asked you a few questions about our faith. You may also want to extend an invitation to a family member who was baptized Catho- lic, but was unable complete his or her Sacraments, such as Eucharist and Confirmation.

The people of God, as represented by the local Church, should understand and show by their concern that the initiation of adults is a re- sponsibility of all the baptized. Therefore the community must always be fully prepared in the pursuit of its apostolic vocation to give help to those searching for Christ. (RCIA 9)

As the people of God, we are called to pursue those who are searching for Jesus and lead them to the R.C.I.A. process where they will learn the essential truths of our faith, and also, through the grace of God, will fall in love with the Eternal Lover, the Person of Jesus Christ.

If you encounter a seeker who is interested in learning more about our faith or wants to become Catholic, please have them contact me at [email protected] or at 314-966-8600.

Thank you very much for your prayers. Let’s all go out and invite someone who is searching for Jesus to join our R.C.I.A. process this fall!

Peace be with you,

Linda Doyle

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL CONTINUES THIS WEEKEND

In the Gospel this weekend we see that even the simple gift of a cup of water can contain the fullness and generosity of a loving heart. As we look forward to returning to a more normal schedule of activities and sacramental celebrations, you are invited once again to participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal by making a gift. Your gift will help many who have been impacted by the Covid-19 outbreak in our archdiocese. As many of us seek the courage and strength to take up our cross and follow Jesus, may charity fill our hearts and generosity overflow!

If your circumstance permit and your family is blessed with good health and employment, please consider increasing your gift to make up for those who are unable to make a gift at this time. More information can be found at aca.archstl.org.

THE FOCUS OF OUR RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE FOR JUNE IS MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DISABILITIES Practicing disability etiquette is an easy way to make people with disabilities feel welcome. This week’s focus is Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Learning Disabilities.

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER Autism is a complex neurobehavioral condition that includes impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skills combined with rigid, repetitive behaviors. Because of the range of symptoms, this condition is now called autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

10 Tips on How to Communicate with People Who Have Autism Spectrum Disorder:  Please always keep in mind that communication difficulties are common with Autism. We have difficulties in reading social cues and body language. Be patient and understanding.  We tend to take things literally and have often trouble reading between the lines. As a result, we may ask a lot of questions to clarify what is meant by something that you say.  If we misunderstand something that you say, please be patient and expand on what you said and explain what you meant.  Please don’t get offended by our communication style. We tend to be frank, honest and matter of fact.  Please don’t expect eye contact. We may be able to force eye contact, but it is not comfortable for us.  Please keep in mind that we most likely have been rejected, excluded, ridiculed or bullied in the past. If we seem anxious or insecure this may be due to living in a world that misunderstands us and is often hostile to us.  Please don’t speak down to us. Treat us as equals. We may sound flat or have an unusual tone to our voice.  Please don’t talk too loudly or yell at us. It is very jarring to us.  Please do NOT touch us without warning. It will make us jump. We don’t like unexpected touches.  Please don’t assume that we lack empathy or emotion. We pick up on negative or judgmental attitudes. We know when people look down on us or are hostile to us. We will shut down if you show us a lack of respect.  Please keep in mind that we are all different. These issues will vary from person to person.

ADHD ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. It is usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active. It is normal for children to have trouble focusing and behaving at one time or another. However, children with ADHD do not just grow out of these behaviors. The symptoms continue and can cause difficulty at school, at home, or with friends. A child with ADHD might:  daydream a lot  forget or lose things a lot  squirm or fidget  talk too much  make careless mistakes or take unnecessary risks  have a hard time resisting temptation  have trouble taking turns  have difficulty getting along with others

LEARNING DISABILITIES A learning disability is a neurological disorder. In simple terms, a learning disability results from a difference in the way a person’s brain is “wired.” Children with learning disabilities are as smart or smarter than their peers. But they may have difficulty reading, writing, spelling, reasoning, recalling and/or organizing information if left to figure things out by themselves or if taught in conventional ways.

A learning disability can’t be cured or fixed; it is a lifelong issue. With the right support and intervention, however, children with learning disabilities can succeed in school and go onto successful, often distinguished careers later in life.

10 Facts about learning disabilities:  Fifteen percent of the U.S. population, or one in seven Americans, has some type of learning disability, according to the National Institute of Health.  A learning disability is essentially a specific and persistent disorder of a person’s central nervous system affecting the learning process.  This impacts a person’s ability to either interpret what they see and hear, or to link information from different parts of the brain.  One of the most common indicators of a learning disability is a discrepancy between the individual’s potential (aptitudes and intellectual capacity) and his or her actual level of achievement.  Difficulty with basic reading and language skills are the most common learning disabilities. As many as 80% of students with learning disabilities have reading problems.  Learning disabilities often run in families.  Learning disabilities should not be confused with other disabilities such as autism, intellectual disability, deafness, blindness, and behavioral disor- ders. None of these conditions are learning disabilities. In addition, they should not be confused with lack of educational opportunities like fre- quent changes after school or attendance problems.  Attention disorders, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities often occur at the same time, but the two disorders are not the same.  Having a learning disability does not mean a person is incapable of learning; rather that they learn in a different way.  Many people with a learning disability develop strategies to compensate for or to circumvent their difficulties. 8 June 28, 2020
