Barghoth1 1*Botany &Microbiology Dept., Faculty of Science (Boys), Al-Azhar University, 11884 Nasr City, Cairo, Egypt *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract BTX compounds are monoaromatic hydrocarbon pollutants that are toxic to the human health and environment. It is one of the most stable compounds in soils, ground and surface waters, therefore its biodegrading is worthy to be undertaken. In the present investigation, thirty nine halophilic bacterial isolates capable to utilize toluene as the only carbon source. They were isolated from alkaline soils in Al- Hamra Lake, Wadi ElNatrun, Egypt. Based on the highest degradation of toluene, isolate TS48 was selected as the most potent isolate. The isolate is belonging to family Xanthomonadaceae of the subclass Proteobacteria and was identified as Stenotrophomonas sp. TS48 according to the 16S rRNA gene sequence and phenotypic characterizations. Strain TS48 was very closely related to Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila AMX 19, Stenotrophomonas nitritireducens L2 and Stenotrophomonas terrae R-32768 with similarity levels at 97, 96 and 96% respectively. Strain TS48showed better growth at a wide range of temperatures between 20 up to 40 ºC, pH values 6 to 9 and salt concentrations from 2.5 to 10%. -
