ABDUL ABULBUL AMIR (Original Title: Abdulla Bulbul Ameer) Percy French 1877 A musical monologue written for a concert at Trinity College, Dublin. Three sequels were written as well.

1. The sons of the Prophet are brave men and bold, And quite unaccustomed to fear (D7 G C G) But the bravest by far in the ranks of the Shah Was Abdul Abulbul Amir (D7 G C D7 G)

2. If you wanted a man to encourage the van, Or harass the foe from the rear. Storm fort or redoubt, you had only to shout, For Abdul Abulbul Amir

3. Now the heroes were plenty and well known to fame, In the troops that were led by the Czar And the bravest of these was a man by the name Of Ivan Skavinsky Skavar.

4. One day this bold Russian, he shouldered his gun, And donned his most truculent sneer Downtown he did go where he trod on the toe, Of Abdul Abulbul Amir

5. "Young man," quoth Abdul, "Has life grown so dull, That you wish to end your career? Vile infidel know, you have trod on the toe, Of Abdul Abulbul Amir."

6. "So take your last look at the sunshine and brook, And send your regrets to the Czar For by this I imply, you are going to die, Count Ivan Skavinsky Skavar."

7. "My friend, your remarks in the end, Will avail you but little, I fear For you ne'er will survive to repeat them alive, Mister Abdul Abulbul Amir"

8. Then this bold Mameluke drew his trusty skibouk, Singing, "Allah! Il Allah! Al-lah!" And with murderous intent he ferociously went, For Ivan Skavinsky Skavar.

9. They parried and thrust, they side-stepped and cussed, Of blood they spilled a great part The philologist blokes, who seldom crack jokes Say that hash was first made on the spot.

10. They fought all that night neath the pale yellow moon, The din, it was heard from afar And huge multitudes came, so great was the fame Of Abdul and Ivan Skavar

11. As Abdul's long knife was extracting the life, In fact he was shouting, "Huzzah!" He felt himself struck by that wily Calmuck, Count Ivan Skavinsky Skavar.

12. The Sultan drove by in his red-breasted fly, Expecting the victor to cheer But he only drew nigh to hear the last sigh, Of Abdul Abulbul Amir

13. Czar Petrovich, too, in his spectacles blue, Sauntered up in his gold-plated car And arrived just in time to exchange a last line, With Ivan Skavinsky Skavar.

14. There's a tomb rises up where the Blue Danube rolls, And engraved there in characters clear Is, "Stranger, when passing, oh pray for the soul Of Abdul Abulbul Amir"

15. A splash in the Black Sea one dark moonless night, Caused ripples to spread wide and far It was made by a sack fitting close to the back, Of Ivan Skavinsky Skavar.

16. A Muscovite maiden her lone vigil keeps, Neath the light of the cold northern star And the name that she murmurs in vain as she weeps Is Ivan Skavinsky Skavar.

BLOWING IN THE WIND Bob Dylan G C D G C G How many roads must a man walk down, before you can call him a man? G C D G C D Yes and how many seas must a white dove sail, before she sleeps in the sand? G C D G C G Yes and how many times must the cannonball fly before they’re forever banned? C D G Em C D G The answer my friend is blowing in the wind. The answer is blowing in the wind.

Yes and how many years can a mountain exist, before it is washed to the sea? Yes and how many years can some people exist, before they’re allowed to be free? BOTH SIDES NOW Judy Collin Capo 1 or 2 E B7 E B7 E A Bows and flows of angel hair, And ice cream castles in the air. And feather canyons everywhere, B7 E B7 E B7 E I’ve looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun, They rain and snow on everyone. A B7 So many things I could have done, But clouds got in my way. E A E A E A E I’ve looked at CLOUDS from both sides now, From UP AND DOWN and still somehow B7 E A B7 E A E A E A E A E It’s clouds illusions I recall, I really don’t know CLOUDS at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud, To say I love you right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus clowns, I’ve looked at love that way. But now its just another show, You leave ‘em laughing when you go And if you care, don’t let them know, Don’t give yourself away. I’ve looked at LOVE from both side now, From GIVE AND TAKE and still somehow It’s love’s illusions I recall, I really don’t know LOVE at all.

Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, The dizzy dancing way you feel When every fairy tale comes real, I’ve looked at life that way. But now old friends are acting strange, They shake their heads, they say I’ve changed. Well something’s lost and something’s gained, In living . I’ve looked at LIFE from both sides now, From WIN AND LOOSE and still somehow It’s life’s illusions I recall, I really don’t know LIFE at all. BLUE SKIES Irving Am C G7 C E7 Blue Skies smiling at me, Nothing but blue skies do I see. Am C G7 C E7 Blue birds, singing a song, Nothing but blue birds all day long. C Fm C Fm C G7 C Never saw the sun shining so bright, Never saw things going so right. C Fm C Fm C G7 C Noticing these days hurrying by, when you’re in love, my how they fly. Am C G7 C Blue days, all of them gone. Nothing but blue skies from now on.

Extra Verses: I was blue, just as blue as could be; Every day was a cloudy day for me. Then good luck came a-knocking at my door; Skies were gray but they’re not gray anymore.

3. I should care if the wind blows east or west; I should fret if the worst looks like the best I should mind if they say it can’t be true; I should smile, that’s exactly what I do. DAY IS DONE Peter Yarrow Tell me why you’re crying my son. I know you’re frightened like everyone. (Key of D) Is it the thunder in the distance you hear? Will it help if I stay very near? I am here.

So, if you take my hand my son, all will be well when the day is done. (Repeat) Day is done, day is done. Day is done, day is done.

2. Do you ask why I’m sighing my son? You shall inherit what mankind has done. In a world filled with sorrow and woe, if you ask me why this is so, I really don’t know.

3. Tell me why you’re smiling my son. Is there a secret you can tell everyone? Do you know more than men who are wise? Can you see what we all must disguise, through your loving eyes? MT AIRY SONG CIRCLE - SONG BOOK

The condor is a symbol of freedom. Worldwide there are more than 400 versions - 300 with lyrics. In 1933 a piano was registered in US. Simon and Garfunkel covered it in Bridge over Troubled Waters.

FRANKIE AND JOHNNIE WERE LOVERS by Jacques Prevert (French) C (E) F (A) Frankie and Johnny were lovers, Oh, Lordy how they could love. They swore to be true to each other F (A) C (E) G7 (B7) C (E) F (A) C (E) Just as true as the stars above. He was her man, but he did her wrong. Frankie and Johnny went walking. Johnny in a brand new suit. Frankie paid one hundred dollars. Just to make her man look cute. He was her man, but he did her wrong.

Johnny said, “I’ve got to leave you. But I won’t be very long. Don’t you wait up for me, honey, Nor worry while I’m gone.” He was her man, but he did her wrong. Frankie went down to the corner, stopped in to buy her some beer. Said to the local bartender, “Has my Johnny man been here?” He was her man. But he did her wrong.

“I ain’t gonna tell you no stories. I ain’t gonna tell you no lies. Johnny went by ‘bout an hour ago With a girl named Nellie Bly. If he’s your man, he’s doin’ you wrong.” Frankie went home in a hurry. She didn’t go there for fun. She knew at the back of the closet Was Johnny’s shootin’ gun. He was her man, but he doing her wrong.

She took a cab at the corner, “Driver can you hurry this cab.” Frankie was a desperate woman, Getting’ two-timed by her man. He was her man, but he’s doin’ her wrong. Frankie got out at south Clark Street. Looked in a window up high. Saw Johnny a lovin’ & kissin’ That high brow Nellie Bly. He was her man, but he was doin’ her wrong.

Johnny saw Frankie a comin’, Out the back door he did scoot. But Frankie took aim with his pistol, And the gun went roota-toot-toot. He was her man, and he did her wrong. O roll me over so easy, roll me over so slow. Roll me over easy boys, ‘Cause my wounds they hurt me so. I was her man, but I did her wrong.

Get out your rubber tired carriage, get out your rubber tired hack. There’s twelve men a going to the graveyard, but eleven comin’ back. He was her man, but he did her wrong. The sheriff arrested poor Frankie, he took her to jail the same day. He locked her up in the dungeon cell, And he threw the key away. He was her man, but he did her wrong. A murder in St Louis, Missouri at 2 am, October 15, 1899 was the inspiration for this song. Frankie Baker, a 22 year old woman, shot her 17 year old lover Allen. Several versions appears subsequently. MT AIRY SONG CIRCLE - SONG BOOK

How can you ask if I’m happy going my way? You might as well ask a child at play. There’s no need to discuss or understand me. I won’t ask of myself to become something else. I’ll just be me.

LYIN’ EYES The Eagles G Gmaj7 C Am D City girls just seem to find out early, How to open doors with just a smile. G Gmaj7 C Am C G A rich old man and she won’t have to worry, she’ll dress up all in lace and go in style. Late at night a big old house gets lonely, I guess every form of refuge has its price. And it breaks her heart to think her love is only, Given to a man with hands cold as ice.

So she tells him she must go out for the evening, To comfort an old friend who’s feeling down. But he knows where she’s going as she’s leaving, She’s headed for the cheatin’ side of town. G C G Em Bm Am D You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes, and your smile is a thin disguise. G G9 C A Am D G I thought by now you’d realize there ain’t no way to hide those lyin’ eyes. On the other side of town a boy is waiting, With firey eyes and dreams no one could steal. She drive on through the night anticipating, Cause she makes him feel the way she used to feel.

She rushes to his arms they fall together, She whispers that its only for a while. She swears that soon she’ll be coming back forever, she pulls away and leaves him with a smile CHORUS She gets up and pours herself a strong one, And stares out at the stars up in the sky, Another night, it’s gonna be a long one, She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry.

And she wonders how it ever got this crazy. She dreams about a boy she knew in school. Did she get tired or did she just get lazy. She’s so far gone, she feels just like a fool.

My oh my, you sure know how to arrange thing, You set it up so well, so carefully. Ain’t it funny how your new life didn’t change things, You’re still the same old girl you used to be. Chorus: Well, did he ever return? No, he never returned and his fate is still unlearned. (What a pity! Poor ole Charlie. Shame and scandal. He may ride forever. Just like Paul Revere.) He may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston. He's the man who never returned.

2. Charlie handed in his dime at the Kendall Square Station, and he changed for Jamaica Plain. When he got there the conductor told him, "One more nickel." Charlie couldn't get off of that train.

3. Now, all night long Charlie rides through the station, crying, "What will become of me?!! How can I afford to see my sister in Chelsea or my cousin in Rocksbury?"

4. Charlie's wife goes down to the Sculley Square Station every day at quarter past two, And through the open window she hands Charlie a sandwich as the train comes rumblin' through.

5. Now, you citizens of Boston, don't you think it's a scandal how the people have to pay and pay? Fight the fare increase! Vote for George O'Brien! Get poor Charlie off the M. T. A. End: He's the man who never returned. He's the man who never returned. Ain't you Charlie?

RIVER OF DREAMS Billy Joel G In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep, C D From the mountain of faith to a river so deep G D I must be looking for something something sacred I lost, C D But the river is wide and its too hard to cross. Em D C Bm And even though I knew the river is wide, I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore. Em D A7 D And try to cross to the opposite side. So I can finally find what I’ve been looking for. In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep, From the valley of fear to a river so deep And I’ve been searching for something taken away of my soul. Something I would never lose, something somebody stole. 2. I don’t know why I go walking at night. But now I’m tired and I don’t walk anymore. I hope it doesn’t take the rest of my life, Until I find what it is I’ve been looking for. In the middle of the night I go walking in my sleep, Through the jungle of doubt to a river so deep. I know I’m searching for something, something so undefined. C D G That it only can be seen by the eyes of a blind, In the middle of the night. 3. TRAMP, TRAMP, TRAMP (Civil War Song) George Root in E A Northern song became popular among the Confederacy. Later it became a Sunday School song. NORTHERN VERSION (Original 1864) 1. In the prison cell I sit thinking Mother dear of you, And our bright and happy home so far away. And the tears they fill my eyes, spite of all that I can do Though I try to cheer my comrades and be gay.

Chorus: Tramp, Tramp! Tramp! The boys are marching. Cheer up comrades they will come. And beneath the starry flag, we shall breathe the air again Of the free land in our own beloved home. 2. In the battle front we stood, when their fiercest charge they made. And they swept us off a hundred men or more. But before we reached their lines, They were beaten back dismayed. And we heard the cry of victry o’er and o’er. 3. So within the prison cell, we are waiting for the day That shall come to open wide the iron door And the hollow eye grows bright, and the poor heart almost gay, as we think of seeing home and friends once more. SOUTHERN VERSION (Original 1864) In my prison cell I sit, thinking Mother dear of you. And my happy Southern home so far away. And my eyes they fill with tears, ‘spite of all that I can do, though I try to cheer my comrades and be gay. Tramp, tramp, tramp the boys are marching. Cheer up comrades they will come. And beneath the stars and bars we will breathe the air again, of the freemen in our own beloved home. 2. In the battle front we stood, when their fiercest charge they made. And our soldiers by the thousands sank to die. But before they reached our lines they were driven back dismayed. And the Rebel Yell went upward to the sky. 3. Now our great Commander Lee, crosses broad Potomac’s stream, and his legions marching northward take their way. On Pennsylvannia’s roads will their trusty muskets gleam, and her iron hills shall echo in the fray. 4. In the cruel stockade-pen, dying slowly day by day, for weary months we’ ve waited all in vain. But if God will speed the way of our gallant boys in gray, I shall see your face, dear Mother, yet again. 5. When I close my eyes in sleep, all the dear ones ‘round me come, at night my little sister to me calls. And mocking visions bring all the warm delights of home, while we freeze and starve in Northern prison walls. Sunday School Song: Jesus loves the little children. All the . THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD Gordon Lightfoot

Asus2 Em G D Asus2 The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down, Of the big lake they called “Gitche Gumee” Em G D Asus2 The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead, When the skies of November turn gloomy. Em G D Asus2 With a load of iron ore 26 thousand tons more, Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty, Em G D Asus2 That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed When the “Gales of November” came early.

2. The ship was the pride of the American side, Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin. As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most, With a crew and good captain well seasoned. Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firm, When they left fully loaded for Cleveland, And later than night when the ship’s bell rang, Could it be the north wind they’d been feelin’?

3. The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound, And every man knew, as the captain did, too, T’was the witch of November come stealin’, The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait, When the Gales of November came slashin’ When afternoon came it was freezin’ rain, In the face of a hurricane west wind.

4. When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck, Say’ “Fellas, it’s too rough to feed ya.” At seven p.m. a main hatchway caved in, he said “Fellas, it’s been good t’know ya.” The captain wired in he had water comin’ in, And the good ship and crew was in peril, And later that night when ‘is lights went outta sight, Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

5. Does anyone know where the love of God goes, When the waves turn the minutes to hours? The searches all say they’d have made Whitefish Bay, If they’d put 15 more miles behind her. They might have split up or they might have capsized, They may have broke deep & took water All that remains is the faces and names, Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

6. Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings, In the rooms of her ice-water mansion, Old Michigan steams like a young man’s dreams, The islands and bays are for sportsmen. And farther below Lake Ontario, Takes in what Lake Erie can send her, And the iron boats go as the mariners all know, With the Gales of November remembered.

7. In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayer, In the “Maritime Sailors’ Cathedral,” The church bell chimed till it rang 29 times, For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald. The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down, Of the big lake they call “Gitche Gumee” “Superior” they said, “never gives up her dead, When the ‘Gales of November’ come early!”

WAGON WHEEL Bob Dylan Intro: G D Em C, G D C C G D Em C Headed down south to the land of the Pine, I’m thumbin’ my way into North Caroline. G D C G D Staring up the road and (I) pray to God I see headlights, I made it down the coast in 17 hours. Em C G D C Pickin me a bouquet of dogwood flowers and I’m Hopin’ for Raleigh I can see my baby tonight.

Chorus G D Em C So rock me mama like a wagon wheel. Rock me mama any way you feel. G D C Hey mama rock me. G D Em C Rock me mama like the wind and the rain, Rock me mama like a south bound train. G D C Hey mama rock me.

Runnin’ from the cold up in New England, I was born to be a fiddler in an old time string band. My baby plays the guitar, I pick the banjo now, Oh north country winters keep-a getting’ me low. An I lost my money playin’ poker so I had to up and leave, But I ain’t turning back, To live that old life no more. Chorus

Walkin’ to the south out of Roanoke, I caught a trucker out of Philly had a mice long toke. But he’s a-headed west from the Cumberland Gap, Johnson City Tennessee. I gotta get a move on before the sun, I hear my baby callin’ my name and I know that she’s the only one. And if I die in Raleigh at least I will die free. Chorus
