This meant that, unlike the television series which were filmed in London, the filming locations would be found in close proximity to the studios on the streets of Borehamwood and the nearby village of Shenley, which is just a couple of miles to the north-east. However, each of the three films did have at least one scene shot away from the Borehamwood area, as will be revealed later. In 1971 came first On the Buses film, which was to use a number of filming locations in Borehamwood and less so in nearby Shenley. The scene where Stan is forced to undergo a test after an accident and has to drive the bus on a skidpan was filmed at London Transport’s facility in Chiswick, West London, which unfortunately closed in 1983 and the site has since been redeveloped. Mutiny on the Buses was also filmed largely in Borehamwood, incorporating locations used in the first film as well as new sites. Shenley was once more chosen as an ideal filming location for certain scenes owing to the quiet, secluded nature of the area.

  • British Films 1971-1981
Preface This is a reproduction of the original 1983 publication, issued now in the interests of historical research. We have resisted the temptations of hindsight to change, or comment on, the text other than to correct spelling errors. The document therefore represents the period in which it was created, as well as the hard work of former colleagues of the BFI. Researchers will notice that the continuing debate about the definitions as to what constitutes a “British” production was topical, even then, and that criteria being considered in 1983 are still valid. Also note that the Dept of Trade registration scheme ceased in May 1985 and that the Eady Levy was abolished in the same year. Finally, please note that we have included reminders in one or two places to indicate where information could be misleading if taken for current. David Sharp Deputy Head (User Services) BFI National Library August 2005 ISBN: 0 85170 149 3 © BFI Information Services 2005 British Films 1971 – 1981: - back cover text to original 1983 publication. What makes a film British? Is it the source of its finance or the nationality of the production company and/or a certain percentage of its cast and crew? Is it possible to define a British content? These were the questions which had to be addressed in compiling British Films 1971 – 1981. The publication includes commercial features either made and/or released in Britain between 1971 and 1981 and lists them alphabetically and by year of registration (where appropriate). Information given for each film includes production company, studio and/or major location, running time, director and references to trade paper production charts and Monthly Film Bulletin reviews as source of more detailed information.

  • EMI & the Pre-Heritage Film
EMI and the ‘Pre-heritage’ Period Film Claire Monk Abstract: First coined in the UK in the early 1990s as a new label for an ostensibly new, post-1979, kind and cycle of period cinema, the ‘heritage film’ is now firmly established as a widely used term and category in academic Film Studies. Although the heritage film’s defining features, ideological character and ontological coherence would remain debated, its status as a ‘new’ category hinges (self-evidently) on the presumption that the films of post-1979 culturally English heritage cinema marked a new departure and were clearly distinct from their pre-Thatcher-era precursors. Yet, paradoxically, the British period/costume films of the preceding decade, the 1970s, have attracted almost no scholarly attention, and none which connects them with the post-1979 British heritage film, nor the 1980s cultural and industry conditions said to have fostered the heritage film with those of the 1970s. This article pursues these questions through the prism of Britain’s largest film production and distribution entity throughout 1970-86, EMI, and EMI’s place as a significant, and sustained, but little- acknowledged force in British period film production throughout that time. In so doing, the article establishes the case for studying ‘pre-heritage’ period cinema. EMI’s period film output included early proto-heritage films but also ventured notably wider. This field of production is examined within the broader terrain of 1970s British and American period cinema and within wider 1970s UK cinema box-office patterns and cultural trends, attending to commercial logics as well as genre and the films’ positioning in relation to the later heritage film debates.

Aspects of UK Popular Culture in the Nineteen Seventies John Mullen, Université de Rouen, ERIAC In the 1970s, to almost everyone’s surprise, the post-war boom came to a grinding halt, accompanied by a very high level of industrial strife. Yet at the same time, a number of social changes and values continued to work their way through the fabric of the community. The legalization of homosexuality in 1967, as well as making Britain a safer place to live for gays,1 allowed homosexual rights movements to rise and begin a dialogue with (initially reluctant) left wing currents. The women’s rights’ legislative advances, and the examples of the Black and Women’s movements from the USA gave rise to a flourishing and variegated movement against different aspects of women’s oppression.

  • Hammer Films 1947/1978)

  • British National Cinema
British national cinema With films as diverse as Bhaji on the Beach, The Dam Busters, Mrs Miniver, Trainspotting, The Draughtsman's Contract, and Prick Up Your Ears, twentieth- century British cinema has produced wide-ranging notions of British culture, identity and nationhood. British National Cinema is a comprehensive introduction to the British film industry within an economic, political and social context. Describing the development of the British film industry, from the Lumière brothers’ first screening in London in 1896 through to the dominance of Hollywood and the severe financial crises which affected Goldcrest, Handmade Films and Palace Pictures in the late 1980s and 1990s, Sarah Street explores the relationship between British cinema and British society. Using the notions of ‘official’ and ‘unofficial’ cinema, the author demonstrates how British cinema has been both ‘respectable’ and ‘disreputable’ according to the prevailing notions of what constitutes good cinema. British National Cinema analyses the politics of film and establishes the difficult context within which British producers and directors have worked. Sarah Street questions why British film-making, production and distribution have always been subject to government apathy and financial stringency. In a comparison of Britain and Hollywood, the author asks to what extent was there a 'star system' in Britain and what was its real historical and social function. An examination of genres associated with British film, such as Ealing comedies, Hammer horror and 'heritage' films, confirms the eclectic nature of British cinema. In a final evaluation of British film, she examines the existence of 'other cinemas': film-making which challenges the traditional concept of cinema and operates outside mainstream structures in order to deconstruct and replace classical styles and conventions.
