Agreed it is not easy to remain without anger at all times but the effort to remain calm and unperturbed should be there at all times. An angry person loses his sense of judgment. Anger is a result of expectation and at most times stems from a false sense of hurt. Seeing a problem or situation from the viewpoint of others often results in a clearer understanding of human nature. One should desist from expecting anything from others. The greatest of gnanis were greatest of bhaktas as well. At their peak gnana and converge into one. At one level Thirumanthiram is mystic. All its verses KDYHDVXSHU¿FLDOPHDQLQJDQGVHYHUDOOD\HUVRIKLGGHQ

29 meaning. What I am able to access here is just a little deeper than the literary meaning. I implore Swamigal to elaborate on the deeper meaning of these verses at an appropriate time. At another level these verses denote deepest level of bhakti. They connote a sense of surrender to the divine. Adi Shankara closes Bhaja Govindam with a verse that says: The hapless devotee surrenders at the feet of the Master Released from bondage of life With senses restrained Sees the Divine in his heart

Each verse of Thirumanthiram echoes this feeling of unconditional acceptance and surrender enabling the discerning reader to access that Divine Atma Guru in one’s heart. The knowers of Brahman speaks of them (refers them) as Shade and light and describe them as the worshippers RI ¿YH ¿UHV DQG KDYH SHUIRUPHG WKH WULSOH 1DFKLNHWKD 6DFUL¿FH 6LQFH WKH LQWHUSUHWDWLRQ RI WKLV YHUVH LV OLWWOH WULFN\, have tried to explain it as the question and answer format to aid the comprehension of the readers. Follows are the questions framed in the logical order and the answers are provided for them.

(a) What is the fruit that the verse is referring to? The word rthamLQ WKLV YHUVH LV GH¿QHG DV µWUXWK¶ E\ AdhiShankara as it means that it is ‘inescapable fruit of action’. (d) Who are the “Two” referred? The “two” referred here is conceivably the Jivatma and Paramatma and the Upanishad says that the two enjoys the fruit of results from their own good actions.
