Dr. Sukdaven suggested that I embark on the study of the concept of Maya. Although this concept provided a challenge for me and my faith, I wish to thank Dr. Sukdaven for giving me the opportunity to cover such a deep philosophical concept in Hinduism. This concept Maya is deeper than one expects and has broaden and enlightened my mind. Remembering Partition: Violence, Nationalism and History in India Gyanendra Pandey CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS Remembering Partition Violence, Nationalism and History in India Through an investigation of the violence that marked the partition of British India in 1947, this book analyses questions of history and mem- ory, the nationalisation of populations and their pasts, and the ways in which violent events are remembered (or forgotten) in order to en- sure the unity of the collective subject – community or nation. Stressing the continuous entanglement of ‘event’ and ‘interpretation’, the author emphasises both the enormity of the violence of 1947 and its shifting meanings and contours. The book provides a sustained critique of the procedures of history-writing and nationalist myth-making on the ques- tion of violence, and examines how local forms of sociality are consti- tuted and reconstituted by the experience and representation of violent events. It concludes with a comment on the different kinds of political community that may still be imagined even in the wake of Partition and events like it. GYANENDRA PANDEY is Professor of Anthropology and History at Johns Hopkins University. He was a founder member of the Subaltern Studies group and is the author of many publications including The Con- struction of Communalism in Colonial North India (1990) and, as editor, Hindus and Others: the Question of Identity in India Today (1993). What the Upanisads Teach
What the Upanisads Teach by Suhotra Swami Part One The Muktikopanisad lists the names of 108 Upanisads (see Cd Adi 7. 108p). Of these, Srila Prabhupada states that 11 are considered to be the topmost: Isa, Kena, Katha, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Chandogya, Brhadaranyaka and Svetasvatara . For the first 10 of these 11, Sankaracarya and Madhvacarya wrote commentaries. Besides these commentaries, in their bhasyas on Vedanta-sutra they have cited passages from Svetasvatara Upanisad , as well as Subala, Kausitaki and Mahanarayana Upanisads. Ramanujacarya commented on the important passages of 9 of the first 10 Upanisads. Because the first 10 received special attention from the 3 great bhasyakaras , they are called Dasopanisad . Along with the 11 listed as topmost by Srila Prabhupada, 3 which Sankara and Madhva quoted in their sutra-bhasyas -- Subala, Kausitaki and Mahanarayana Upanisads --are considered more important than the remaining 97 Upanisads. That is because these 14 Upanisads are directly referred to by Srila Vyasadeva himself in Vedanta-sutra . Thus the 14 Upanisads of Vedanta are: Isa, Kena, Katha, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Aitareya, Taittiriya, Brhadaranyaka, Chandogya, Svetasvatara, Kausitaki, Subala and Mahanarayana. These 14 belong to various portions of the 4 Vedas-- Rg, Yajus, Sama and Atharva. Of the 14, 8 ( Brhadaranyaka, Chandogya, Taittrirya, Mundaka, Katha, Aitareya, Prasna and Svetasvatara ) are employed by Vyasa in sutras that are considered especially important. In the Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradaya , Srila Baladeva Vidyabhusana shines as an acarya of vedanta-darsana. Other great Gaudiya acaryas were not met with the need to demonstrate the link between Mahaprabhu's siksa and the Upanisads and Vedanta-sutra. -

(COUNTERFEIT PROPHECY, SUPERSTITION, ASTROLOGY AND VIGILANT GLOBE) Bhaskar Bhuyan India, State- Assam, Dist- Lakhimpur, Pin-787023 ABSTRACT Along with advancement and technology, still some parts of the globe are greatly affected by fake beliefs. Future is unpredictable and black magic is superstition. Necessity lies in working for future rather than knowing it. Lack of intelligence is detrimental for a society. Astrology is not a science, Astronomy is science. Astrologers predict by the influence of planets and they create a psychological game. In other words they establish a perfect marketing and affect the life of an individual in every possible way. Superstition is still ruling and it is degrading the development. Key words: Superstition, Astrology and black magic. 1.0 INTRODUCTION: The globe is still not equally equipped with development, advancement and intellectuality. Some 5000 years ago, superstition started to merge out from the ancient Europe and got spread to entire Globe. Countries like China, Greece, India, United Kingdom, Japan, Thailand, Ireland, Italy, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal etc are influenced by black magic, superstition, astrology and fake Beliefs. Almost 98 countries out of 195 are affected by credulity. Orating the scenario of ancient time and comparing it with the present arena, it is still not degraded. THE OTHER SIDE OF FREEDOM OF RELIGION IN INDIA Vipin Das R V1 Introduction Freedom of religion is considered as the precious possession of every individual from the inception of mankind (Harold E., 2002).2 Every modern nation in the world, in their Constitutions, clearly establishes the right to freedom of religion, belief, faith, thought, and expression of all these freedoms to all its citizens. Many a time, these expressions and practices attributed to religions, faith and beliefs become blind. Citizens or the people following such blind belief and faith on religion and practising so-called religious activities infringes forcefully the human right of others to live with dignity and status. The recent news and reports from print and television media reveals the truth that exploitations in the name of black magic are on the rise in Kerala as well as in India.3 Superstition- General meaning. The term „Superstition‟ is a complex term having no clear definition. This image is very unique. Here, one can see Ramanuja with the gnyAna mudra (the sign of a teacher; see his right/left hands); usually, Swami Ramanuja’s images always present him in the anjali mudra (offering worship, both hands together in obeisance). Our elders say that Swami Ramanuja’s image at Thirumala shows the gnyAna mudra, because it is here that Swami Ramanuja gave his lectures on Vedarta Sangraha, his insightful, profound treatise on the meaning of the Upanishads. It is also said that Swami Ramanuja here is considered an Acharya to Lord Srinivasa Himself, and that is why the hundi is located right in front of swami Ramanuja at the temple (as a mark of respect to an Acharya). In Thirumala, other than Lord Srinivasa, Varaha, Narasimha and A VEDICS JOURNAL Varadaraja, the only other accepted shrine is that of Swami Ramanuja. -

Superstitious beliefs can have a negative impact on the social well being of people in society because they are highly associated with financial risk taking and gambling behavior. Superstitious beliefs have probably been present among us since the beginning of time and have been passed on through the centuries, culturally shared and transmitted from generation to generation. Introduction: A superstition is a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance or a false conception of causation or an irrational object attitude of mind towards the supernatural nature or God resulting from superstition. Often if arises from ignorance, a misunderstanding of science or causality, a belief in fate or magic, or fear of that which is unknown. -

Introduction Thugi1 captured the English popular imagination in the nineteenth century as did few features of India. Bracketed with suti (widow self-immolation) and infanticide, it proved the "backward" state of India to the Utilitarians, and its need for Christianity to the Evan- gelicals. Priests thundered of the need for missionaries and Bentha- mites argued for better courts and jails. For many Englishmen, Thugi was only the most hideous and bizarre of those strange religious perversions which were the essence of India—making it alien, evil, incomprehensible, and quite frightening enough to be titillating. European official accounts of Thugi and later histories reveal almost as much colour as the novelists; yet among them there are also striking inconsistencies. Let us compare descriptions of Thugi by authors whom we might justly expect to be authoritative.
