IMM White Paper Scanning Probe Diamondoid Mechanosynthesis Prepared for the International Technology Roadmap for Productive Nanosystems 1 August 2007 D.R. Forrest, R. A. Freitas, N. Jacobstein One proposed pathway to atomically precise manufacturing is scanning probe diamondoid mechanosynthesis (DMS): employing scanning probe technology for positional control in combination with novel reactive tips to fabricate atomically-precise diamondoid components under positional control. This pathway has its roots in the 1986 book Engines of Creation, in which the manufacture of diamondoid parts was proposed as a long-term objective by Drexler [1], and in the 1989 demonstration by Donald Eigler at IBM that individual atoms could be manipulated by a scanning tunelling microscope [2]. The proposed DMS-based pathway would skip the intermediate enabling technologies proposed by Drexler [1a, 1b, 1c] (these begin with polymeric structures and solution-phase synthesis) and would instead move toward advanced DMS in a more direct way. Although DMS has not yet been realized experimentally, there is a strong base of experimental results and theory that indicate it can be achieved in the near term. • Scanning probe positional assembly with single atoms has been successfully demonstrated in by different research groups for Fe and CO on Ag, Si on Si, and H on Si and CNHCH3. • Theoretical treatments of tip reactions show that carbon dimers1 can be transferred to diamond surfaces with high fidelity. • A study on tip design showed that many variations on a design turn out to be suitable for accurate carbon dimer placement. Therefore, efforts can be focused on the variations of tooltips of many kinds that are easier to synthesize. -

Scott2 1University of Luxemburg, Luxemburg & Freie Universit¨at Berlin, Germany 2Visiting Scholar at University of Califormia, Berkeley, USA October 15, 2018 Abstract Starting from a generalization of the standard axioms for a monoid we present a step- wise development of various, mutually equivalent foundational axiom systems for category theory. Our axiom sets have been formalized in the Isabelle/HOL interactive proof as- sistant, and this formalization utilizes a semantically correct embedding of free logic in classical higher-order logic. The modeling and formal analysis of our axiom sets has been significantly supported by series of experiments with automated reasoning tools integrated with Isabelle/HOL. We also address the relation of our axiom systems to alternative pro- posals from the literature, including an axiom set proposed by Freyd and Scedrov for which we reveal a technical issue (when encoded in free logic): either all operations, e.g. morphism composition, are total or their axiom system is inconsistent. The repair for this problem is quite straightforward, however. 1 Introduction We present a stepwise development of axiom systems for category theory by generalizing the standard axioms for a monoid to a partial composition operation. Our purpose is not to make or claim any contribution to category theory but rather to show how formalizations involving the kind of logic required (free logic) can be validated within modern proof assistants. A total of eight different axiom systems is studied. The systems I-VI are shown to be equiva- lent. The axiom system VII slightly modifies axiom system VI to obtain (modulo notational arXiv:1609.01493v5 [cs.LO] 12 Oct 2018 transformation) the set of axioms as proposed by Freyd and Scedrov in their textbook “Cat- egories, Allegories” [10], published in 1990; see also Subsection 9.2 where we present their original system. -

More specifically, nanorobotics refers to the still largely ‘hypothetical’ nanotechnology engineering discipline of designing and building nanorobots. • Nanorobots ((,,nanobots, nanoids, nanites or nanonites ) would be typically devices ranging in size from 0.1-10 micrometers and constructed of nanoscale or molecular components. As no artificial non-biological nanorobots have yet been created, they remain a ‘hypothetical’ concept. • Another definition sometimes used is a robot which allows precision interactions with nanoscale objects , or can manipulate with nanoscale resolution. • Followingggpp this definition even a large apparatus such as an atomic force microscope can be considered a nanorobotic instrument when configured to perform nanomanipulation. • Also, macroscalble robots or mi crorob ots which can move wi th nanoscale precision can also be considered nanorobots. Rasiowa realized very early that the spectrum of computer programs should be incorporated into the realm of mathematical logic in order to make a rigorous treatment of program correctness. This gave rise to the concept of algorithmic logic developed since the 1970s by Rasiowa, Salwicki, Mirkowska, and their followers. Together with Pratt’s dynamic logic, algorithmic logic evolved into a mainstream branch of research: logic of programs. In the late 1980s, Warsaw logicians Tiuryn and Urzyczyn categorized various logics of programs, depending on the class of programs involved. Quite unexpectedly, they discovered that some persistent open questions about the expressive power of logics are equivalent to famous open problems in complexity theory. This, along with parallel discoveries by Harel, Immerman and Vardi, contributed to the creation of an important area of theoretical computer science: descriptive complexity. By that time, the modal m-calculus was recognized as a sort of a universal logic of programs. The mid 1990s saw a landmark result by Walukiewicz, who showed completeness of a natural axiomatization for the m-calculus proposed by Kozen. The difficult proof of this result, based on automata theory, opened a path to further investigations.
