Annotation: The effect of the search image on the ability of hand reared skinks (Chalcides sexlineatus) to reveal a “fake” Batesian mimic was tested with respect to their previous experience with palatable experimental prey (Guyana spotted cockroach – Blaptica dubia) which served as a motivational prey as well as midsized mealworm beetle larvae (Tenebrio molitor). The red firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus) was used as an aposematic model. Sabree, Advisor Rachelle Adams Norman Johnson Laura Kubatko Copyrighted by Alejandro Otero-Bravo 2020 Abstract Nutritional symbioses between bacteria and insects are prevalent, diverse, and have allowed insects to expand their feeding strategies and niches. It has been well characterized that long-term insect-bacterial mutualisms cause genome reduction resulting in extremely small genomes, some even approaching sizes more similar to organelles than bacteria. While several symbioses have been described, each provides a limited view of a single or few stages of the process of reduction and the minority of these are of extracellular symbionts. This dissertation aims to address the knowledge gap in the genome evolution of extracellular insect symbionts using the stink bug – Pantoea system. Specifically, how do these symbionts genomes evolve and differ from their free- living or intracellular counterparts? In the introduction, we review the literature on extracellular symbionts of stink bugs and explore the characteristics of this system that make it valuable for the study of symbiosis. We find that stink bug symbiont genomes are very valuable for the study of genome evolution due not only to their biphasic lifestyle, but also to the degree of coevolution with their hosts. i In Chapter 1 we investigate one of the traits associated with genome reduction, high mutation rates, for Candidatus ‘Pantoea carbekii’ the symbiont of the economically important pest insect Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug, and evaluate its potential for elucidating host distribution, an analysis which has been successfully used with other intracellular symbionts. -

Brief report Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 61 (4): 863–868, 2016 A new pentatomoid bug from the Ypresian of Patagonia, Argentina JULIÁN F. PETRULEVIČIUS A new pentatomoid heteropteran, Chinchekoala qunita gen. (Wilf et al. 2003). It consists of a single specimen, holotype et sp. nov. is described from the lower Eocene of Laguna MPEF-PI 944a–b, with dorsal and ventral sides, collected from del Hunco, Patagonia, Argentina. The new genus is mainly pyroclastic debris of the plant locality LH-25, latitude 42°30’S, characterised by cephalic characters such as the mandibular longitude 70°W (Wilf 2012; Wilf et al. 2003, 2005). The locality plates surpassing the clypeus and touching each other in dor- was dated using 40Ar/39Ar by Wilf et al. (2005) and recalculated sal view; head wider than long; and remarkable characters by Wilf (2012), giving an age of 52.22 ± 0.22 (analytical 2 σ), related to the eyes, which are surrounded antero-laterally ± 0.29 (full 2 σ) Ma. The specimen was originally partly covered and posteriorly by the anteocular processes and the prono- by sediment and was prepared with a pneumatic hammer. It was tum, as well as they extend medially more than usual in the drawn with a camera lucida attached to a Wild M8 stereomicro- Pentatomoidea. This is the first pentatomoid from the Ypre- scope and photographed with a Nikon SMZ800 with a DS-Vi1 sian of Patagonia and the second from the Eocene in the re- camera. For female genitalia nomenclature I use valvifers VIII gion, being the unique two fossil pentatomoids in Argentina. -

Nitrogen Content in Riparian Arthropods Is Most Dependent on Allometry and Order
Wiesenborn: Nitrogen Contents in Riparian Arthropods 71 NITROGEN CONTENT IN RIPARIAN ARTHROPODS IS MOST DEPENDENT ON ALLOMETRY AND ORDER WILLIAM D. WIESENBORN U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Lower Colorado Regional Office, P.O. Box 61470, Boulder City, NV 89006 ABSTRACT I investigated the contributions of body mass, order, family, and trophic level to nitrogen (N) content in riparian spiders and insects collected near the Colorado River in western Arizona. Most variation (97.2%) in N mass among arthropods was associated with the allometric effects of body mass. Nitrogen mass increased exponentially as body dry-mass increased. Significant variation (20.7%) in N mass adjusted for body mass was explained by arthropod order. Ad- justed N mass was highest in Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, Araneae, and Odonata and lowest in Coleoptera. Classifying arthropods by family compared with order did not explain signifi- cantly more variation (22.1%) in N content. Herbivore, predator, and detritivore trophic-levels across orders explained little variation (4.3%) in N mass adjusted for body mass. Within or- ders, N content differed only among trophic levels of Diptera. Adjusted N mass was highest in predaceous flies, intermediate in detritivorous flies, and lowest in phytophagous flies. Nitro- gen content in riparian spiders and insects is most dependent on allometry and order and least dependent on trophic level. I suggest the effects of allometry and order are due to exoskeleton thickness and composition. Foraging by vertebrate predators, such as insectivorous birds, may be affected by variation in N content among riparian arthropods. Pyrrhocoris Apterus (Linnaeus, 1758) - a New Record of Firebug (Hemiptera, Pyrrhocoridae) from Malta

MALTA (2019) Vol. 10 : 106–107 DOI: 10.17387/BULLENTSOCMALTA.2019.12 Pyrrhocoris apterus (Linnaeus, 1758) - a new record of firebug (Hemiptera, Pyrrhocoridae) from Malta Thomas CASSAR1 True bugs of the family Pyrrhocoridae, more commonly known as red bugs, cotton stainers or (in the case of Pyrrhocoris apterus) firebugs, are represented by 43 species from 13 genera in the Palaearctic (AUKEMA & RIEGER, 2001). The Heteroptera of the Maltese Islands have been relatively well-studied, with 141 species recorded (CUESTA SEGURA et al., 2010; CARAPEZZA & MIFSUD, 2015; 2016). Of these, only one species belongs to the family Pyrrhocoridae - Scantius aegyptius aegyptius. However, specimens collected in summer of 2018 were confirmed to bePyrrhocoris apterus, a new Pyrrhocorid record for Malta. Pyrrhocoris apterus (Linnaeus, 1758) Material examined: Malta, Ħaż-Żebbuġ, 20.vi.2018, leg. T. Cassar (1 macropterous); Rabat, Chadwick Lakes, 16.ix.2018, leg. T. Cassar (1 brachypterous); Rabat, Chadwick Lakes, 19.ix.2018, leg. T. Cassar (1 brachypterous). Notes: Pyrrhocoris apterus has a predominantly Palaearctic distribution, being present from the Iberian Peninsula eastwards into Siberia and China, including most of central and southern Europe. In controlled conditions, eggs take seven and a half days to hatch (MATOLÍN, 1973). P. apterus goes through five larval instars, the last of which lasts the longest – typically about seven days R( IZKI & SLÁMA, 1968). Adults can be either brachypterous or macropterous, though various intermediate morphs exist. Brachypters’ wings are reduced to vestigial scales whilst macropterous individuals have well-developed pairs of wings which extend to the abdomen tip or past it (SEIDENSTÜCKER, 1953). -

A new genus and species, Yuripopovina magnifica, belonging to a new coreoid family, Yuripopovinidae (Hemiptera: Pentatomomorpha), is described and illustrated from the Lower Cretaceous amber of Lebanon. The species represents the first definitive Mesozoic record for the Coreoidea. A cladistic analysis of Coreoidea, including the new family, is undertaken. INTRODUCTION The Pentatomomorpha with its 14 000 known living species (WEIRAUCH & SCHUH 2011) is the second largest of the seven heteropteran infraorders (SCHAEFER 1993, ŠTYS & KERZHNER 1975) (Enicocephalomorpha, Dipsocoromorpha, Gerromorpha, Nepomorpha, Leptodomorpha, Cimicomorpha, and Pentatomorpha). Most authors recognize five superfamilies within Pentatomomorpha, but there remains controversy regarding the 628 Polish Journal of Entomology 80 (4) composition of these superfamilies (SCHAEFER 1993, ŠTYS 1961). -
