ABSTRACT Many experts agree that high-quality television can bean excellent supplement to active learning in the classroom andat home. This guide contains activities for childrenages 3 to 6, each activity incorporating a theme or topic related toan episode of "Arthur" presented during the program's third season on the Public BroadcastingSystem. The guide presents 30 activities that can be done with materialscommonly found in the home or classroom and that are designed to build schoolreadiness skills, especially early and emergent literacy skills. Allactivities either have components for older and younger childrenor are adaptable for different ages. Many activities also include child-centered learning areas, basedon the themes of the activities and episodes, that allow childrento explore on their own. Each activity describes the skills addressed, theneeded materials, and easy-to-follow directions. Many activities alsoinclude ways for children to be active within their neighborhoods, ideas forinvolving parents and family members, suggestions for learning centers,ways to enrich and extend the activity beyond the one-day period, and ideasfor group discussion. Also included in the guide are "Arthur" episode descriptions, recipes, a resource list, suggested "Arthur" book titles, andan "Arthur" coloring sheet. (KB)
