    Sightsavers Deworming Program – Cameroon GiveWell Wishlist 3 Schistosomiasis (SCH) / Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) Project Narrative Country: Cameroon Location (region/districts): South-West, North-West, West, Far North, North, Littoral, East, Adamaoua Duration of project: 3 years Start date: April 2019 Goal Reduction in the prevalence and intensity of SCH and STH amongst school age children. Outcome School aged children (SAC) between 5 -15 years, and adults where prevalence dictates, within the intervention zone are effectively treated with mebendazole/albendazole and praziquantel as required. Program implementation areas Sightsavers is supporting SCH / STH mass drug administration (MDA) in three regions of South West, North West and West Cameroon in 2018 with funding from GiveWell’s quarterly payments. Wishlist 3 will extend this support in existing implementation areas for an additional two years to help control SCH and STH in compliance with the National NTD Program policies. We have divided the Wishlist 3 funding request into three priorities that constitute a nationwide program. Sightsavers will only expand cumulatively, i.e. each consecutive priority builds upon the ask of the previous priority. Priority 1: SCH/STH MDA in our existing operational regions of West, North-West, and South- West. Our current approach of using GiveWell’s quarterly allocations is not sustainable. The funding available through quarterly allocations varies. To enable a well-planned program we need secured funding to ensure resources are allocated appropriately.     DREF final report Cameroon: Wild Polio Virus Epidemic DREF operation n° MDRCM017 GLIDE n° EP-2013-000164-CMR 29 August 2014 The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters. Summary: CHF 73,457 was allocated from the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Cameroon National Society in assisting 695,287 direct beneficiaries. Two cases of polio were reported and confirmed in the town of Malentouen, Noun Division, West Region of Cameroon in September 2013. Faced with this epidemic, the Cameroonian government, through her Ministry of Public Health, launched a major response with the help of partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. Thus, Local Immunization Days (LIDs) were organized in the month of Door-to-door community awareness session conducted by Cameroon Red Cross volunteers in the West Region. Photo by December 2013, involving 47 health districts IFRC in 6 of the 10 regions of Cameroon. Still in response to the epidemic, three sessions of National Immunization Days (NIDs) were planned in 2014 and the first one took place in January 2014.The participation of the Cameroon Red Cross (CRC) during the December 2013 LIDs and January 2014 NIDs was remarkable. During the first phase of Polio NIDs, the CRC exclusively intervened in the West Region of Cameroon, mobilizing 200 volunteers, 20 supervisors and 01 Regional Coordinator.

In 2010, following new support from USAID through their ENVISION program led in Cameroon by Helen Keller International, Sightsavers expanded its support to three other targeted preventive chemotherapy treatment neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) - lymphatic filariasis (LF), soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and schistosomiasis (SCH) in the North-West, South- West and West Regions. Mass Drug Administration (MDA) of mebendazole and praziquantel (in STH and schistosomiasis endemic districts) takes place in these three regions through schools and vocational training institutions once a year, as it is in the entire country. Drugs are distributed by school teachers to both enrolled and non- enrolled school aged children (5-14 years). National and regional NTD coordination teams and NGO staff ensure supervision and monitoring. Sightsavers is supporting the distribution of praziquantel for schsitosomiasis in 14 health districts (three in the Northwest, six in the Southwest, five in the West) and mebendazole for STH in all 57 health districts of the three regions.
