[email protected] DATE OF RECEPTION: 09/09/2011 DATE OF APROBATION: 30/10/2011 Abstract: This paper reports on a study which has compared the environmental knowledges and practices which immigrants bring from their homelands with their experiences in their new homes. Arabic immigrants have come to Australia in significant numbers since WW2, from a range of countries and religions, including Christians and Muslims from Lebanon, Palestine and Syria and Mandaeans from Iraq. Many have settled in the industrial, working class suburbs along the northern bank of the Georges River, running through Sydney. These communities have sought out natural spaces in an overcrowded and politically-charged atmosphere. In particular, they have been frequent users of a series of parklands (including a National Park) along the river as well as the river itself for fishing, relaxation, jet ski and other power recreation. In the Georges River, Arabic Australians have drawn on their homeland environmental cultural knowledge and experiences but the expression of their expectations and strategies for relating to places has been strongly inflected by local environments and socio-political tensions. However, researchers have paid scant attention to the sense of citizenship evinced by marginalised ethnic minorities. The present investigation examines citizenship in Australia by exploring intergroup relations. It attempts to determine the feeling of belonging that connects the Indigenous people of Australia to other ‘non-white’ groups considered ’un-Australian’ by the mainstream society. -

8 6RFLDODQG&XOWXUDO/LQNV%HWZHHQ$XVWUDOLD DQGWKH0LGGOH(DVW 8.1 This Chapter examines the social and cultural links which have been established between Australia and the Middle East region, and how these links might be enhanced. 8.2 Social, cultural, educational and other links between Australia and the Middle East have been underpinned by the contribution made to Australia's social and cultural life by migrants from many countries of the region. For most communities from the Middle East, migration to Australia on a large scale has been a fairly recent phenomenon, influenced by major upheavals or historical events—for example, the protracted Arab-Israeli conflict, the 15-year civil war in Lebanon, the Gulf War and the emergence of fundamentalist Islamic states. Against this background, prospective migrants from the region, as from other parts of the world, have been attracted by the opportunities presented by Australia's immigration program. Migration to Australia from the Middle East 8.3 According to data derived from the 1996 census,1 the countries that represent the most significant sources of migration from the Middle East, as a percentage of the total Australian population, are Lebanon, Egypt, Iran, and Iraq. This thesis examines the emerging phenomenon of Muslim civil society organisations (MCSOs). In contrast to much publicised jihadist and radical groups, MCSOs are far more representative of Muslim communities and integral to the long-term position of Islam in Australia. Using descriptive phenomenology, this study presents the experiences of Australian Muslim civil society actors and the organisations they represent. Through 30 unstructured, in-depth interviews with 15 Australian MCSOs actors, their stories are told for the first time based on their lived experience and in their own words. In particular, this thesis explores how MCSOs have responded to the challenges of the Australian socio-political context, the perceived impact of these experiences, and how Islam is manifested within the contexts of these experiences. The key themes which emerged from these interviews include: community building, social inclusion, the impact of 9/11 and the negotiation of identity. -

In the 2010 Australian election campaign migration was connected to security (defense of our borders, terrorism and social cohesion) and to related issues of insecurity about the future (population size, sustainability and economic growth). This framing of migration as a national security issue overlooks the reality that Australian immigration is part of the global flow of population. Migration is an international issue experienced by states as a national question of border control and sovereignty seeking to manage the consequences of global inequality and mobility. -

This thesis examines why and how Indigenous Australians convert to Islam in the New South Wales suburbs of Redfern and Lakemba. It is argued that conventional religious conversion theories inadequately account for religious change in the circumstances outlined in this study. The aim of the thesis is to apply a sociological-historical methodology to document and analyse both Indigenous and Islamic pathways eventuating in Indigenous Islamic alliances. All of the Indigenous men interviewed for this research have had contact with Islam either while incarcerated or involved with the criminal justice system . -

Abu Anees, Australasian Muslim Times , 3 November 2016 On Saturday 29 October Mosques all around Australia welcomed thousands of people of all faiths and diverse background, men, women and children, in order to build community understanding and harmony. National Mosque Open Day is an annual Australia-wide event initiated by the Lebanese Muslim Association (LMA) with support from the Department of Social Services. The event features a number of mosques across the nation simultaneously opening their doors to the public and inviting them to come in and explore their local mosque. This year National Mosque Open Day was the largest ever, featuring increased number of participating mosques across Australia, in capital cities as well as in regional towns, giving more Australians the chance to visit and be welcomed into their local mosques. One of the oldest and largest mosques, the Imam Ali Mosque in Wangee Road, Lakemba was visited by thousands of people last Saturday to observe prayer services, listen to the recitation of Quran, and look at the exhibition on Islamic teachings, practices and cultural activities within the mosque. A number of politicians and interfaith leaders visited the Lakemba mosque throughout the day meeting the congregation as well as the visitors. Jihad Dib, the state member for Lakemba and the NSW Shadow Minister of Education was readily available at the front steps of the mosque welcoming visitors and engaging people into conversation. -
The 'Young Muslim Man' in Australian Public Discourse
THE ‘YOUNG MUSLIM MAN’ IN AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC DISCOURSE Transforming Cultures eJournal, Vol. 2 No 1, November 2007 http://epress.lib.uts.edu.au/journals/TfC Kiran Grewal Abstract Through an analysis of two highly mediatised recent events in Australia this article seeks to interrogate the intersections of gender, ethnicity and culture in the construction of Australian national identity. A series of gang rapes in the early 2000s attracted widespread public outrage and the harshest ever condemnation of acts of sexual violence in Australian history. Linked to these events, in December 2005 a series of riots at the Sydney beachside suburb of Cronulla led to further questioning of ethnic relations and the state of Australian multiculturalism within media and political discourses. While many of the responses to the gang rapes and the Cronulla riots have drawn on the language of ‘women’s rights’, a closer look at the discourses suggests a different story. Responses to the gang rapes have often characterised the attacks as being against the Australian community, rather than against individual women. It is also interesting to contrast the outrage surrounding the gang rapes with the general silence regarding the increased racist violence committed against Muslim women in recent times. Furthermore, the linking of the gang rapes with a particular religious/ethnic community can be contrasted with the discourses on the alleged gang rapes involving Australian sporting teams, such as the Bulldogs and more recently the Wests Tigers. Finally the manner in which the events of Cronulla have been recast and linked back to the ‘threat’ posed by young Muslim/Lebanese/Middle Eastern men to Australian women suggests that ethnicity and gender both play an important and mutually reinforcing role in the construction of Australian national identity. -

Together for Humanity Foundation Annual Report July 2015 - June 2016 A message from the Chair 2015-16 was a very successful year for the Together For Humanity Foundation. During the year we focused on three priorities: developing intercultural understanding of students in terms of their embracing people who are different to themselves, fostering a sense of belonging and connectedness in students from marginalized minorities and the ongoing issue of organisational sustainability. I am pleased to report success with these three priorities. This year we have engaged 7,784 students and others face to face and up to a quarter of a million more people online through our teachers and students resources. Our school programs continued to change the way students think about ‘the other’ and help them to recognise commonality and explore complexity. Many of the students we engaged might have never had meaningful contact with a Muslim, a Jew or an Aboriginal person before. In our programs they met presenters of different faiths, and in some cases also with students their own age from different cultural or faith backgrounds, the students’ misconceptions were dispelled as they found out just how much they have in common with those who are ‘different’. Our work with students from minority backgrounds has also provided significant benefits as discussed in this report. th In terms of the organisational position, the Foundation commences its 15 year, 2016-17, in a relatively strong financial position and able to sustain the important educational work in schools. The Together For Humanity Foundation attracted two substantial grants from the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services and we have conducted successful fundraising activities.
