Our Mother of Perpetual Help - June 27 Since 1866 the Redemptorists have spread devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the icon and title of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help). According to tradition, the ancient Byzantine icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was stolen from a church in Crete, where many miracles had occurred. The image remained in the private possession of a Roman merchant and his family until 1499, when it was publicly displayed in the Church of St. Matthew in Rome between the Basilicas of St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran. When St. Matthew’s was destroyed in 1789, the icon was rescued and hung in an obscure monastery chapel until the Redemptorists learned that the site of their new headquarters in Rome had once been the site of St. Matthew’s, the one-time home of a miraculous icon of Our Lady. A Redemptorist priest who as a young man had frequented the monastery chapel that displayed the icon informed his brothers where to find the image. The Redemptorists asked Pope Pius IX for permission to move the icon to their new church, San Alfonso, which was built on the location of the icon’s earlier home. The pope granted his permission and told Redemptorist Martyrs of Ukraine - June 28 Bishop Nicholas Charnetsky (1884-1959) - From 1945-56, he was imprisoned in about 30 Soviet labor camps and prisons. Bishop Vasyl Velychkovsky (1903-73) - It is believed that his death was caused by a slow-acting poison administered prior to his release from prison. Father Zenon Kovalyk (1903-41) - When the Soviet prisons were opened on the arrival of the invading German army, Father Zenon’s body was found crucified to a wall of the prison of Zamartynivska in 1941. Father Ivan Ziatyk (1899-1952) - He was arrested in 1950 and condemned to 10 years imprisonment, but died of a savage beating in 1952. June 28 is the feast day of the Redemptorist martyrs of Ukraine, modern-day men who gave their lives for the faith. These men were among the 25 Ukrainian martyrs beatified during Pope St. John Paul II’s visit to Lviv in 2001. Blessed Gennaro Maria Sarnelli - June 30 Gennaro Sarnelli was born in Naples, Italy, on September 12, 1702. Son of the Baron of Ciorani, he had a solid cultural and spiritual formation. Dedicating himself to the study of jurisprudence, he gained a doctorate in civil and canon law at age 20. Caring for the sick in the Hospital for the Incurables, he felt the call to the priesthood. During this time he also came to know Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, who was his first biographer. Ordained a priest in 1732, he dedicated himself especially to the catechesis of young boys and to the rehabilitation of girls at risk of becoming prostitutes. In June of the following year, he entered the Redemptorists. He dedicated himself to the preaching of the Word of God to those who were most destitute of spiritual help. For reasons of health, in 1736, he returned to Naples, where, while continuing the missionary activity of the Redemptorists Congregation, he resumed his previous pastoral and charitable activities, especially among the sick, the old, those in prison and the young boys forced to work as dock-laborers. He also initiated a fervent movement against the spread of prostitution. A prodigious writer, he published more than 30 books on a wide range of subjects, including socio- juridical studies, moral issues, mysticism, pedagogy, pastoral practice, Mariology, and ascetical theology. In 1741, he organized and took part in the great mission among the spiritually abandoned areas in the outskirts of Naples. Spent by his burning zeal, he died in Naples June 30, 1744, at the age of 42. John Paul II beatified him on May 12, 1996. BACK TO NORMAL FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES! The Human Concerns & Needs Committee will again be collecting school supplies to be distributed to the Manierre School, an inner-city school just south of North Avenue, and to Casa Romero, an after-school program in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. We are in touch with both to determine their greatest needs. Last year you responded amazingly to the need to give about 450 children the tools to learn remotely. This year, we will be back to the normal classroom learning, hopefully without interruption. The list below includes the items most in demand, and we have created an easy Wishlist if you like to shop on Amazon. The best prices we have found are often in-store at Staples, Office Depot, Target and Walgreens. We are happy to do the shopping and schlepping, using sales, coupons, gift cards purchased through St. Michael’s and Office Depot’s cash back to school program.
