Christopher C. Kirby, PhD. Eastern Washington University Cheney, WA. 99004 “IMAGINATIONLAND,” TERRORISM, AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REAL AND IMAGINARY CHRISTOPHER C. KIRBY Eastern Washington University “Ladies and gentlemen, I have dire news. Yesterday, at approximately 18:00 hours, terrorists successfully attacked... our imagination”1 “Imaginationland” was an Emmy winning, three-part story which aired as the tenth, eleventh and twelfth episodes of South Park’s eleventh season and was later re-issued as a movie with all of the deleted scenes included. The story begins with the boys waiting in the woods for a leprechaun that Cartman claims to have seen. Kyle, ever the skeptic, has bet ten dollars against sucking Cartman’s balls that leprechauns aren’t real. When the boys finally trap one, to Kyle’s shock and dismay, it cryptically warns of a terrorist attack and disappears. That night at the dinner table Kyle asks his parents where leprechauns come from and why one would visit South Park to warn of a terrorist attack. They chide him for not knowing the difference between real and imaginary and he mutters, “I thought I did.” What ensues is pure South Park genius as we discover that, in fact, nobody seems to know what the difference is. As the story unfolds it’s obvious that no one will be safe, as the episode lampoons the U.S. “war on terror,” the American legal system, Hollywood directors, the media, Christianity, the military, Kurt Russell, and Al Gore’s campaign against climate change [ManBearPig is real… I’m super cereal!] all the while reminding us that imagination is an essential feature of human life.

Title: Speaking of South Park Author: Christina Slade Response to this paper by: Susan Drake (c)2000 Christina Slade South Park is, at first blush, an unlikely vehicle for the teaching of argumentation and of reasoning skills. Yet the cool of the program, and its ability to tap into the concerns of youth, make it an obvious site. This paper analyses the argumentation of one of the programs which deals with genetic engineering. Entitled 'An Elephant makes love to a Pig', the episode begins with the elephant being presented to the school bus driver as 'the new disabled kid'; and opens a debate on the virtues of genetic engineering with the teacher saying: 'We could have avoided terrible mistakes, like German people'. The show both offends and ridicules received moral values. However a fine grained analysis of the transcript of 'An Elephant makes love to a Pig' shows how superficially absurd situations conceal sophisticated argumentation strategies.

  • PC Is Back in South Park: Framing Social Issues Through Satire
Colloquy Vol. 12, Fall 2016, pp. 101-114 PC Is Back in South Park: Framing Social Issues through Satire Alex Dejean Abstract This study takes an extensive look at the television program South Park episode “Stunning and Brave.” There is limited research that explores the use of satire to create social discourse on concepts related to political correctness. I use framing theory as a primary variable to understand the messages “Stunning and Brave” attempts to convey. Framing theory originated from the theory of agenda setting. Agenda setting explains how media depictions affect how people think about the world. Framing is an aspect of agenda setting that details the organization and structure of a narrative or story. Framing is such an important variable to agenda setting that research on framing has become its own field of study. Existing literature of framing theory, comedy, and television has shown how audiences perceive issues once they have been exposed to media messages. The purpose of this research will review relevant literature explored in this area to examine satirical criticism on the social issue of political correctness. It seems almost unnecessary to point out the effect media has on us every day. Media is a broad term for the collective entities and structures through which messages are created and transmitted to an audience. As noted by Semmel (1983), “Almost everyone agrees that the mass media shape the world around us” (p. 718). The media tells us what life is or what we need for a better life. We have been bombarded with messages about what is better.

  • Boondocks Vs. South Park
Satire, Race, and Modern Cartoons: Boondocks vs. South Park Stanford University Communication Department June 4, 2011 Melanie J Murphy Satire is primarily seen in literary form where irony, sarcasm and ridicule are used in order to expose, or denounce vice or folly with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement. In addition to satire as a literary genre, we have seen an increase in the use of satire in American television as well. Popular cartoons such as the Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, and the Boondocks are known to have created controversy through episodes that feature satire on political, social, and racial issues. While all four of these cartoons have satirical content, the Boondocks and South Park dedicate the majority of their satire each episode toward one main issue. It would be interesting to see if (1) there are racial differences between how whites and blacks view both shows and (2) if the satire featured in these two shows actually exposes society’s foolishness, possibly leading to improvement. It is our hypothesis that through social identification theory, groups will be made through the similarity of race (Tajfel, 1982). This will allow for those who identify with either race, to feel more positively toward the show of their own race. Comedy Central’s South Park is a satirical, animated show, made for mature audiences created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Although the show is thought by some to be incredibly offensive, the creators explain that there is an underlying moral lesson. The show follows four characters that live in the fictional predominantly white town of South Park, Colorado.

Running Head: PRUDENCE AND RACIAL HUMOR Prudence and Racial Humor: Troubling Epithets Author: Jonathan P. Rossing Published in Critical Studies in Media Communication This is the author's manuscript of the article published in final edited form as: Rossing, Jonathan P. (2014). Prudence and Racial Humor: Troubling Epithets. Critical Studies in Media Communication, 31(4): 299 – 313. DOI: 10.1080/15295036.2013.864046 Prudence and Racial Humor 2 Prudence and Racial Humor: Troubling Epithets Abstract Prudence is an essential virtue in a contemporary racial culture marked by the contingencies and the paradoxical in/stability of race and racism. Recurring controversies surrounding racial epithets exemplify this clash between deeply entrenched racial meanings on one hand and shifting conventions on the other. I argue in this essay that racial humor presents a valuable site for understanding and practicing prudential reasoning and performance. Analyzing three episodes from popular texts—The Boondocks, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and South Park—I illustrate the way racial humor resists prescriptive reasoning and creates possibilities for audiences to practice prudence. Keywords: Race/Racism; Humor; Prudence; Boondocks; South Park; The Daily Show Prudence and Racial Humor 3 Prudence and Racial Humor: Troubling Epithets Racial culture demands prudence: practical knowledge necessary to make wise judgments and act responsibly in contingent circumstances. One word epitomizes the necessity of prudential reasoning in relation to race—nigger.1 Laden with a sordid history of oppression, this epithet consistently elicits visceral reactions and fuels anxieties about racism, and yet the epithet openly circulates in vernacular discourse and popular culture. The slur exemplifies the paradox of race: it dramatizes both the material consequences and the instability of racial constructions (Flores & Moon, 2002).

This Table is of course based on a fan favourite of the show, Butters; the voice actors from the show even lent their voices to the Table and thus make it feel even more authentic. Match all that with background music from the Butters show and you got one heck of a Pinball Table! I hope my Guide will help you understand the Table better.

The American Lawyer: Seventh Circuit Grapples with Sexually... http://stage.www.americanlawyer.com/digestFriendlyTAL.jsp?i... ALM Properties, Inc. Page printed from: The American Lawyer Back to Article Seventh Circuit Grapples with Sexually Suggestive South Park Parody in Copyright Case Victor Li The Litigation Daily 06-08-2012 Chief Justice Warren Burger was once so offended by a free speech case where a protestor wore a jacket that said "F--- the Draft," he refused to say the offensive word during the Justices' weekly conference, warned the lawyers arguing the case to refrain from swearing, and was frightened that the justice writing for the majority would utter the profanity when reading his opinion in open court. We wonder if the judges on a U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit panel wrestled with the same qualms when they watched the viral video "What What (In the Butt)" to determine whether a "South Park" parody video sung by the character Butters Stotch violated copyright laws. (Trust us, we can't link to the video but you can find it online.) Or perhaps the judges delegated that duty to their clerks. As the court notes, WWITB is a "paean to anal sex." In a 12-page opinion issued Thursday, the unanimous panel upheld the dismissal of a suit filed by Brownmark Studios, which distributed the original WWITB video. The judges--who made sure to refer to the video as "WWITB" for most of the opinion--held that the parody in the 2008 South Park episode was covered by the fair use doctrine.
