NEXT PATHFINDERS MEETING: Wednesday, December 18, 2018, 6:00 pm, at the club dinner/holiday party, Smithfield Station, 415 S Church St, Smithfield, 757-357-7700 Club News -The Williamsburg Holiday Walking Weekend, December 13-15, is almost here! Colonial Williamsburg will be decorated for a Colonial Christmas. Come walk both the day and evening walks to sample the complete package of decorations, lights, and entertainment! And don’t forget the swim! Some reminders: 1) Please call Betty Bess to volunteer, 757-539-0136. Openings are available! 2) Club members, please consider bringing some cookies to share! 3) Don’t be disappointed! Send in your registration and payment early if you want a patch or CW house. There are only a few left and they sold out last year! See the December Area Walks section for all the walk and swim details. - Don’t forget to mail/deliver your completed membership form for 2020! You may turn forms in at the Williamsburg walks or at the holiday party. You may also give your membership forms 1 and dues to Shirley Boyd or mail them to PENINSULA PATHFINDERS, Attn: Membership, 11 Berkley Drive, Hampton, VA 23663. The 2020 membership form is on the last page of this newsletter. Membership remains only $6 per person for those 18 years or older or $12 per family. The surcharge of $10/year for receiving the club newsletter by USPS mail still applies and helps to pay for copying and postage. Why join?? Your membership dues help pay for copying walk directions, walk sanctioning fees to AVA, supplies for walks, and more. -The Pathfinder’s HOLIDAY DINNER/PARTY and meeting will be held Wednesday, December 18, 6:00 p.m., at Smithfield Station, 415 S Church St, Smithfield. Attendees will order from the menu. To ensure there’s enough seating, sign up for the dinner at the Williamsburg Holiday walks or call Bill Lowell at 757-651-8439 or 757-357-5355. Bring your thoughts on meeting dates, location, and frequency for possible discussion. -The Veteran’s Day walk at Thomas Nelson Community College was a success! We had 55 walkers: 20 A-Awards, 30 credit only, and 5 free. Club members voted at the November meeting to donate the $87.50 profit to a veteran’s charity. Thank you everyone who worked at the walk: Pat Parker, Sandy Croushore, Bill Lowell, Shirley Boyd, Linda Thompson, Robin Williams, Andy Bowers, Pam Bowers, Tim Miner, Cecilia Miner, and to the wonderful folks at TNCC for their support. If I missed anyone, I apologize; please let me know and I’ll publish your name next month! -Congratulations to our new club officers who were elected at the November meeting. There were no nominations from the floor, and the slate was approved by acclamation. President-Sandy Croushore, VP-Mary Parker, Secretary-Bill Lowell, Treasurer-Gordon Rheinstrom. The term of office will be Jan 2020-Dec 2022. Thank you SO MUCH for serving!! -Planned Pathfinders walks for 2020: Spring Walk: Beaver Dam walk and picnic; Fall walk in early Sept or late Oct, one of two possibilities: Chuckatuck or Newport News Sculpture Walk; Williamsburg Holiday Walks/Swim. No new Year-Round Events (YREs) will be added next year. Several Pathfinder YREs will include the new AVA special programs in 2020: Airports at Ft Monroe and Ft Eustis; Mayflower at Hampton, Jamestowne, and Williamsburg; Clocks at Ft Monroe, Hilton Village, Williamsburg. -The JBLE (Fort Eustis) walk will add a second walk box at the Post Library in 2020. The Library is open every day except Fridays. The current start box will remain at the Transportation Museum. -Looking to be more involved in the Pathfinders? Consider volunteering for one of these available positions. These positions currently need to be filled: POC for Hilton Village walk; POC for Christopher Newport University walk; POC for Noland Trail walk, posting info on club Facebook page. Contact Sandy Croushore for more information or to volunteer. December/January Area Walks -Dec 7: Virginia Beach-Boardwalk, Group, sponsored by the Gators. Meet at 9:00 at the Holiday Food Mart, 909 General Booth Boulevard. This 8/14k walk, rated 1A, follows city sidewalks and pedestrian paths (paved). The walk goes past the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum and the Old Coast Guard Museum, as well as the main Boardwalk along the beach. Special Programs: Bridges, Walk the USA Street by Street. -Friday, Dec 13 - Sunday, Dec 15: Williamsburg Holiday walks/swim- Events- 2 walks & 1 swim, sponsored by the Pathfinders. The annual holiday tradition is back! A night walk is offered Friday and Saturday; a day walk is offered Saturday and Sunday; and a swim is offered all three 2 days. Colonial Williamsburg is decorated for Christmas, so walkers can enjoy both the door decorations during the day and the lights, bonfires, and carolers at night. All trails are suitable for strollers, wheelchairs, and handicapped. For more information, contact Annette Tollett, 757-814- 1417, [email protected]. These walks qualify for the following special programs: Bridges - Spanning the USA, Ice Cream Parlors, Little Free Library (JUST ADDED with 1km extension), Points of Reference, Take a Walk in a City Park, Vice Presidential Walks, Walking the Path of Inventions, and Walk the USA - Street by Street. Virginia Cities Program: Williamsburg. Start point for walks and swim is Best Western-Williamsburg Historic, 351 York Street, Williamsburg, VA. A special room rate of $71 plus tax, per night, for a single/double/triple/quad room, MAY still be available depending on the level of occupancy of the hotel. Call the hotel, 757- 229-4100, and tell them you are part of the Peninsula Pathfinders' group to check the rate. Night Walk: Friday, Dec 13 and Saturday, Dec 14. Start 3:00- 6:00 pm. Finish by 9:00 pm. The night 5/6/10/11k walk trails are primarily in Colonial Williamsburg. Walkers are encouraged to bring a flashlight. The night award is the patch pictured. Registration is $9 for the night award and credit. Credit only fee for the walk is $3. Day Walk: Saturday, Dec 14 and Sunday, Dec 15. Start 8:00 am-1:00 pm. Finish by 4:00 pm. The day 5/6k walk trail is primarily in Colonial Williamsburg. The day 10/11k walk trail will be through Colonial Williamsburg and primarily along city streets. The day award, pictured here, is a wooden block cutout of part of Shields Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg. This building is the other half of the 2018 award. Registration is $17.00 for the day award and credit. Credit only fee for the 2019 Williamsburg Day A-Award, walk is $3. Shields Tavern, part 2. Swim: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec 13, 14, 15. Start 3:00-6:00 pm on Friday; 10:00 am- 6:00 pm on Saturday; and 10:00 am-1:00 pm on Sunday Swim must be finished by 9:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and by 4:00 pm on Sunday. The credit only fee for the swim is $3.00. -Dec 21: No walk scheduled. -Dec 28: No walk scheduled. -Tuesday, Dec 31 – Wednesday, Jan 1: Smithfield- Porcine Parade - Events, sponsored by the Gators. This New Year’s tradition is back! What a great way to end 2019 and to begin 2020. A different walk route is offered each day. For both walks: Start 9am -1pm at Smithfield Station Restaurant, 415 South Church Street, Smithfield. Finish by 4pm. The A-award for both events, pictured here, is the embroidered patch featuring one of the “art pigs” in Smithfield. Cost is $9 for the award and credit; $3 just for credit. Both courses are suitable for strollers but may not be suitable for wheelchairs, especially if there is rain or snow. For more information, contact Don Bradford, 757-576-0966, [email protected]. Special Programs: Both days: Ice Cream Parlors, Little Free Libraries. 3 Dec 31 walk, 5/10k, rated 1B, mostly flat, with a couple of hills. Mostly on town sidewalks/streets. Jan 1 walk, 5/10k, rated 1B, goes through Windsor Castle Park (natural paths), before moving into town (sidewalks and streets) – also mostly flat but some hills. -Jan 4, 2020: No walk scheduled. -Jan 11, 2020: Portsmouth-FIND THE LOVE in Historical Portsmouth – Event, sponsored by the Virginia Vagabonds. Start between 9 and noon at Hardees, 850 London Blvd, Portsmouth. Please park in the lot in the back away from Hardee's entrance doors. Finish by 3:00. This 5/10k walk, rated 1A, goes along city streets through Old Town Portsmouth and through Portsmouth, past two cemeteries, Portsmouth Lightship, Portsmouth Naval Hospital, the Courthouse of 1846 (County of Norfolk), past a stop on the Underground Railroad, and along the shore of the Elizabeth River.
