For Linda, Evie, Mollie and Michael – always. Author’s Note While I have been fortunate over the years to have enjoyed the company of various ex-members and/or former employees of Led Zeppelin, it should be born in mind at all times that this is an unauthorised biography, written objectively and with no undue pressure from any outside influence to do anything other than tell the story as I honestly see it. It should also be clearly understood that the italicised ‘flashback’ passages of the text are not the actual words of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Peter Grant, nor are they actual quotes. Whilst they are all based on thorough biographical research, the facts of which can be found in the Notes & Sources section at the end of this book, the words themselves are the product of my imagination. • The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A
The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A thesis presented to the University Of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2018 © Piacentino Vona 2018 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States.

  • A Brief History of the Hoosac Valley by Lauren R. Stevens
Hoosic A 11/5/14 The Hoosic Matters: A Brief History of the Hoosac Valley By Lauren R. Stevens Introduction: The brook trout Autumn in the Hoosac Valley, northwestern Massachusetts: the sun, peering from underneath dark clouds, sends a bolt of fire through the orange and gold leaves of the sugar maples. On the bottom of a clear, moving tributary to the Hoosic River, a dark- olive fish with wavy marking on her back and red spots on her side thrashes about, creating a nest in the gravel. Her even more colorful mate, he with the jutting jaw, fiercely drives off other males. When their redd is ready, she deposits 1,000 or so eggs and he, after one last tour of the perimeter, slides in to fertilize them. They cover the eggs with gravel; then both adults leave their progeny to-be. Although peripheral males feed on some of the eggs, as the water warms in the following spring, most hatch. The alevins stay under the gravel for a week before emerging to eat. They grow and swim away. Their lives will take them up- and downstream, perhaps into the Hoosic itself, looking for food, logs under which to hide from predators, cool temperature refugia and boulders to provide protection from storms. This will be the place to which they will return, however, provided no barriers are placed in their way, when their turn comes to spawn. The Manomet Center for Conservation Services, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 2012 reviewed the considerable research on the effect of a warming climate on trout, the indicator of the health of cold-water ecosystems and prize game fish of our area.
