Martin Seymour Smith, Mayor of Casterbridge: Introduction Thomas Hardy (1978) To Jimmie iii Abstract During the decades of 1960 to 2000, the name, Iwan Tirta (1935-2010), was synonymous with batik. Batik gained wide international audience because of increase of scholarship on batik and a proliferation of how-to manuals on batiking. Batiking and surface patterning became associated with populations emerging on the islands of the Malay Archipelago. Batik technical skills reached an unprecedented level on the island of Java resulting with superbly decorated cloths. Under official status of an Indonesian state in 1945, batik cultural position and its trajectory changed under President Sukarno (1945-1968). This study focuses on Iwan Tirta's as de facto cultural arbiter under political aegis of President Suharto (1968-1998). Orde Baru (New Order) (Boehlke, 1992, 2008) politics under Suharto secured batik's emblematic position in representing Indonesia and its cultural heritage. Batik has become a visible descriptor for Indonesian cultural sense and sensibilities. This research seeks to determine Iwan Tirta's relationship with batik. It seeks how he understands it conceptually and how he interprets his understanding into his commodities. An extensive body of written text spanning nearly four decades discloses Iwan Tirta's views about batik.   • The Revival of Tradition in Indonesian Politics
    The Revival of Tradition in Indonesian Politics The Indonesian term adat means ‘custom’ or ‘tradition’, and carries connotations of sedate order and harmony. Yet in recent years it has suddenly become associated with activism, protest and violence. Since the resignation of President Suharto in 1998, diverse indigenous communities and ethnic groups across Indonesia have publicly, vocally, and sometimes violently, demanded the right to implement elements of adat in their home territories. This book investigates the revival of adat in Indonesian politics, identifying its origins, the historical factors that have conditioned it and the reasons for its recent blossoming. The book considers whether the adat revival is a constructive contribution to Indonesia’s new political pluralism or a divisive, dangerous and reactionary force, and examines the implications for the development of democracy, human rights, civility and political stability. It is argued that the current interest in adat is not simply a national offshoot of international discourses on indigenous rights, but also reflects a specifically Indonesian ideological tradition in which land, community and custom provide the normative reference points for political struggles. Whilst campaigns in the name of adat may succeed in redressing injustices with regard to land tenure and helping to preserve local order in troubled times, attempts to create enduring forms of political order based on adat are fraught with dangers. These dangers include the exacerbation of ethnic conflict, the legitimation of social inequality, the denial of individual rights and the diversion of attention away from issues of citizenship, democracy and the rule of law at national level. Overall, this book is a full appraisal of the growing significance of adat in Indonesian politics, and is an important resource for anyone seeking to understand the contemporary Indonesian political landscape.

In other words, even rich people cannot really be happy when surrounded by extreme poverty, no matter how strongly they ignore or deny such destitute conditions. Accordingly, we need methods of securing much better results from “throwing money” at poverty problems than have heretofore occurred. Some Achenese of my acquaintance feel that perhaps 80% of the tremendous amount of post-tsunami disaster aid was lost to corruption and thievery. Introduction This paper presents a few of the technical obstacles to poverty alleviation, collected from my personal experiences living nine years in Indonesia. Our objective is to provide NGO’s or individuals some warnings of the security problems of their well-intended charitable efforts. We need means of securing the safety of donors’ contributions as provided by Social Scientist judgments, rather than the collateral required for bank loans, which is simply not available to the vast majority of the poor and hungry of the world who are nevertheless strong, honest, and eager to work. In short, small amounts of capitalization, micro-financed, may be a more effective solution to the world’s poverty problems, than aid programs involving millions of dollars.

Preparation for the competition required architectural design guidelines, which were an important part of the terms of reference for the project. This paper aims to provide an overview of the issues surrounding the work involved in the collaboration work between the Indonesian government and multi-disciplinary participants to establish museum design guidelines for this competition. By articulating and elaborating the characteristics of several famous museums design in the world, by defining relevant architectural theories, and by exploring an in-depth analysis of “batik”, which UNESCO designated as Intangible Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO in 2009, the architectural design guidelines were developed based onfindings revealedby inserting “batik” itself as the museum storyline into contemporary architecture. By referring to trans-disciplinary methods and concepts, then the process of batik making is potentially a kind of architectural “showing off” to expose the uniqueness of Indonesian batik as well as the Architecture-Event theory promoted by French philosopher Jacques Derrida. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh yaitu (1) Perjuangan di Surakarta melibatkan KNI, pemuda, tokoh, bangsawan dan Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono XII Dan pada akhirnya warga berhasil mengambil alih kekuasaan serta melucuti senjata tentara penjajah. (2) Pakubuwono XII lahir di Surakarta pada Selasa Legi tanggal 14 April 1925, dan diangkat menjadi raja di Keraton Surakarta pada usia yang sangat muda yaitu usia 20 tahun. Beliau juga dikenal dengan raja 3 jaman dengan lama memimpin 48 tahun. Atas pengabdiannya bagi Indonesia, maka Pakubuwana XII diberikan piagam penghargaan dan medali perjuangan angkatan ’45 yang ditetapkan oleh Dewan Harian Nasional Angkatan-45 di Jakarta. Piagam merupakan bukti kesetiaannya kepada Negara Kesatuan RI dan atas nasionalisme yang dalam di masa perjuangan kemerdekaan.     Museum Batik Pekalongan Posting Museum Batik Pekalongan yang pernah saya kunjungi pada waktu pembukaan (kurang lebih 2 tahun lalu) ternyata cukup mendapat respons berupa comment. Penasaran, kemarin saya mengunjungi kembali museum ini. Ternyata cukup banyak perubahannya. Dimulai dari awal masuk kami harus membeli tiket sehargaa 3000 rupiah, kemudian kami dipersilahkan melihat seluruh koleksi museum ini bersama seorang guide (pada kunjungan sebelumnya belum ada). Menurut guide yang memandu kami, di museum ini koleksinya selalu diperbaharui dan di rolling, begitu pula dengan tatanan interiornya yang mengalami perubahan oleh kurator museum. Museum ini telah menjadi salah satu aset nasional dan dikelola langsung oleh pemerintah pusat dan bukan milik pemda. Menurut statistik data pengunjung, rata-rata perbulan terdapat sekitar 150 orang yang mengunjungi tempat ini, dan cukup banyak diminati oleh wisatawan asing. Di museum ini terdapat 4 ruang pamer, perpustakaan dan ada ruang peraga. Ruang Pamer Utama menampilkan gambaran umum batik, bahan pembuatnya dan aneka batik kuno, baik dari Indonesia maupun batik luar yang menurut ceritanya di datangkan dari India. Ruang pamer kedua merupakan Ruang Batik Nusantara. Di sini ditampilkan batik batik khas dari daerah di seluruh Indonesia. Rencananya akan di buat tema daerah setiap 6 bulan sekali, kebetulan yang kami lihat kemarin adalah tema batik Pekalongan. Ruang pamer ketiga adalah Ruang Interior Batik, menampilkan perangkat interior rumah dengan bahan dasar batik, tetapi disana juga terdapat batik koleksi seorang warganegara australia bernama Digby Mackintosh yang dihibahkan kepada Museum Batik Pekalongan. Ruang pamer yang terakhir adalah Ruang IwanTirta, berisi bermacam-macam kain batik hasil karya Iwan Tirta seorang desainer indonesia yang memiliki kecintaan pada batik.

By the end of the 20th century, the Indonesian economy was in ruins. The concept of democracy remained contested. The transportation and communication system that once at lea'lt minimall y linked the diverse and at times disparate area'l and peoples of the Indonesian archipelago into an Andcrsonian imagined national community collapsed, making more likely movcmcnt'l for regional autonomy, in turn, making the status of an Indonesian nation itself uncertain. One thing that is certain, however, is that Socharto, the "Father of Development," is history. As political and economic policy makers in Indonesia, the United States, and around the world, and more importantly, Indonesia's men, women, and children pick up the pieces, it is our responsibility to look back and consider the past fifty years. Indonesian development ha'l been marked by a struggle between two opposing forces: one that is commensurate with self-reliance predicated upon an ideology of nationalism, and another that positions Indonesia within global capitalism. The issue that I shall address here is the degree to which the strategies of development were determined by a culture of capitalism or, alternatively, by a culture of nationalism.
