In general these activities create visibility for the rituals and the phenomenon of the age sets in the city. Abraham Celebration: Birth Year 1963 passes on to the next generation, Birth Year 1973 - Open house of the town hall cellars each month: tourists and visitors of Leuven are introduced to Birth Year Life of Leuven via the artifacts presented there - Youngest Birth Year 1973: created a new big event to get attention to their Birth Year and in addition to the Birth Year Life of Leuven in general In short; they stimulate visibility, awarenes-raising and dialogue. 3. The Ommegang of Brussels takes place in the centre of Brussels every year at the start of July. In old Flemish, “Ommegang” means “circumambulation”, the act of walking around. It was the name once given to the procession by the Guild of Crossbowmen in honour of Our Lady of Sablon, a legendary virgin who arrived from Antwerp on a barge and was placed under the protection of the crossbowmen, defenders of the medieval city. That procession followed a route between the Chapel of the Guild of Crossbowmen in the Sablon/Zavel and the Grand Place/Grote Markt. Over time, the different sectors of society in the city joined the procession, which became so representative of Brussels that it was presented to Charles V and his son Philip on 2 June 1549. The Ommegang and the majority of its participants disappeared in the 18th century with the ending of the Ancien Régime. In 1930, to celebrate the centenary of the Kingdom of Belgium, the procession was revived by the will of the guilds of crossbowmen, the historian Albert Marinus and the political and religious authorities of Brussels. This modern Ommegang was recreated based on the descriptions of the procession that Charles V attended in 1549. Ever since, it perpetuates the tradition of processions of the former Brabant, which included corporate nations, lineages, magistracy, rhetoric chambers, the clergy, dancers, musicians, jesters, processional giants and animals and often the figure of Charles V.

Case study : Brussels Preface Capital of Europe and Belgium, the Brussels-Capital Region is a dynamic, multicultural metropolis. It is the third richest metropolis of the European Union behind Luxembourg and London. This is largely due to the presence of European institutions and business tourism. Its economy is faced with three challenges: ensuring job-generating growth; bridging a significant social fracture; and remaining competitive with the other cultural metropolises of Europe. Brussels has rich cultural scene that represents all disciplines. This multicultural and multilingual city strives to make culture accessible to everyone and is highly receptive to new trends and cultures. Cultural activity in Brussels is vibrant and well funded. However, it is loosely coordinated and thus lacks legibility and visibility. This paradox is in part due to the structure of institutions: most cultural activities in the capital are organised independently by one of the two linguistic Communities. In addition, there are multiple levels of political authority, each with its own outlook and agenda. Public initiatives are not guided by a common and overarching metropolitan strategy for culture. There is however growing awareness of the need to work in tandem, to centralise cultural and tourism policy, to reconnect with the social realities of the region and to promote Brussels’ strengths abroad. Meeting these challenges is critical for attracting and keeping talent but also for promoting creativity, local employment and social cohesion. Today more than ever, the future of Brussels is at a crossroads. Culture could play a much greater role in long-term territorial development.
