European Politics and Society Master Programme Master Thesis Football club supporters and the self-determination processes: The political behavior of supporters of the majorfootball clubs in Scotland and Catalonia Student: Meline Margaryan Supervisor:Prof. Jaume López Hernández, Ph.D. Barcelona 2019 Abstract The popularity of sport, in particular football has transformed it into a strong means that is widely utilized by politics nowadays. Hence, the influence of football club’s identities and values on the political vote of their supporters should never be neglected. The aim of the current paper is to study the influence of four major clubs in self -determination proces ses in Scotland and Catalonia in the times of the referenda for independence in 2014 and 2017. The study takes a qualitative approach to the matter and analyzes the way clubs’ identities and values affect the political vote of their supporters. The paper takes an unobserved field of research, by merging the factors of football clubs’ support and fan culture with its possible significance on the political arena, as well as on the fate of submerged nations’ independence movements. • Sport, Nationalism and Secessionism in Catalonia and Scotland
Where extremes meet: Sport, nationalism and secessionism in Catalonia and Scotland Mariann Vaczi, Alan Bairner, Stuart Whigham Abstract In this essay, we trace the symbolic conundrums of belonging, and of the reconciliation of identities, in the context of Catalan and Scottish sport and politics. Our discussion will commence with a necessarily concise consideration of past academic contentions regarding the national ‘psyches’ which have been argued to shape contemporary notions of identity and politics in Catalonia and Scotland, before turning our attention to the specific role of sport vis-à-vis these ‘psyches’ and the growing clamour for greater political autonomy for each of these stateless nations. Based on evidence drawn from the interaction between sport and politics in the two nations, we argue that secessionism is a liminal field of transformation as it includes what is seen as mutually exclusive sets of relationships (Catalans vs. Spaniards; Scottish vs. British, secessionists vs. unionists/centralists), which at the same time allows subjects to pass from one state to another and occupy them non-exclusively. Keywords: Sport; nationalism; secessionism; Catalonia; Scotland 1 Where extremes meet: Sport, nationalism and secessionism in Catalonia and Scotland Introduction The aim of this paper is to examine the intersection between sports and the respective secessionist movements in Scotland and Catalonia. In the case of the former, organised sport has played a significant role in helping to maintain Scotland’s separate identity on the global stage despite being an integral part of the United Kingdom nation state with both the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) being formed in 1879.

Press, sport and mass culture. The role of specialized journalism in the social growth of sport in Catalonia until the civil war (1890-1936) Abstract This paper aims to analyze the role of the sports press in the process of institutionalization and expan- sion of the sporting phenomenon in Catalonia between 1890 and 1936. The study is a result of a comprehensive preliminary analysis of sports journals of the period, both as regards their formal content as from a commercial approach.

‘MÉS QUE UN JOC?’ 1 "Més que un joc?": Sport and contemporary political nationalism in Scotland and Catalonia Authors Whigham S, Lopez-Gonzalez H, Ramon X Abstract This article focuses upon two contexts which have arguably received the most academic and media attention with regards to the interconnection between sport and secessionist nationalism, Scotland and Catalonia, given that both ‘submerged nations’ have held public referenda on the topic of independence / secession from the states of the United Kingdom and Spain, respectively. The analysis endeavours to draw parallels between the two contexts in order to critically examine the extent to which similarities and differences are evident in terms of the growth of political nationalism. Finally, the central discussion outlines the extent to which sport contributed to broader political developments in the recent campaigns for the establishment of independent Scottish and Catalan states, focusing upon the actions of prominent sporting personalities and organisations. Keywords: sport, politics, nationalism, Scotland, Catalonia, independence, secessionism ‘MÉS QUE UN JOC?’ 2 Introduction Given the recent resurgence in support for supposed ‘populist’ political causes in a number of democratic states in Europe and North America, there has been a concomitant rise in academic and media analyses of the various factors which have contributed towards to the growing support for such causes (Judis, 2016; Moffitt & Tormey, 2014; Mudde & Kaltwasser, 2012).
