2012 – 2013 ANNUAL REPORT “The future starts today, not tomorrow”

Pope Francis canonizes Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II on April 27, 2014 The mission of the

is to support the ministries of the Catholic community through the effective long-term management of endowment funds and the encouragement of stewardship.

“Do not walk through time without leaving worthy evidence of your passage.”

A letter from the Executive Director I am thankful to be able to share with you another annual report highlighting the good work of The Catholic Foundation.

The Catholic Foundation has a unique role in the ministry of our Church. We are here to support and assist the many ministries of our Catholic community seeking to build The Kingdom of God on earth. We do this by managing endowment funds, providing grants, and helping our fellow Catholics plan their own personal legacies.

The Catholic Foundation oversees endowment funds for all 118 parishes, missions, and schools in the Archdiocese. We also manage endowments for the Archdiocese itself, for private Catholic schools, Catholic Charities, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and Ignatius House.

Some endowments provide scholarships to Catholic schools. Others provide financial distributions for seminarians, campus ministry programs, and to parishes and other entities singled out by our growing number of donors for special attention.

A donor – whether individual or institutional (the Archdiocese, for example) – may provide money for a specific purpose and even advise on the charitable direction the fund will take. The Catholic Foundation will handle the administration of the gifts on behalf of the donor.

Are you interested in being part of this great work? Whether you are a first-time donor or a longtime supporter, we stand ready to assist you as you make plans to give back to God through a current or future gift. That is our special ministry. (And remember, you don’t have to be rich to build a Catholic legacy.)

We invite you to turn the pages and observe the surprising growth of The Catholic Foundation over the last five years – clear evidence The Catholic Foundation is meeting great needs here in North Georgia.

Then turn to us when you feel the time is right and build your legacy and the future of the Church.

Best regards,

Nancy Dinka Coveny, Executive Director

The original members of the Founders Society contributed funds to begin The Catholic Foundation. Many of those generous people served on the formation committee or as a founding board member. The Society continues to grow with donors who gave at least $5,000 to The Catholic Foundation Endowment Fund. Their gifts support our ministry and strengthen our future. Monsignor Churchwell provided $5,000 from the Priests Care Fund to establish the fund. The endowment will support deacons and their families during times of need.

In 2012 Archbishop Gregory announced he would arrange for up to $100,000 to match similar funds raised by the deacons themselves. The match would come from funds left by the Joseph Mitchell estate. Deacon Dorner asked Deacon Gary Schantz of St. Andrew’s Church in Roswell to chair the “Caring for Those Who Serve” campaign among their fellow deacons. Thanks to the hard work of Deacon Schantz, the committee members, and the generosity of countless fellow deacons and priests, the goal was met and the match was received.

As of December 2013, the fund had grown to $236,419. We continue to welcome your gifts to help our deacons and their families. Please be sure to note the Deacons Assistance Fund when you send your check to the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia.

Under the leadership of Clarence Smith, a past chairman of the Foundation’s board of directors, Havertys has donated office space to The Catholic Foundation for more than five years. This great gift of hospitality has been instrumental in our growth during these hard-pressed times.

In addition to the considerable cost savings, we are grateful for the convenient location of our offices, the occasional use of the board and meeting rooms, and the kindness of the Havertys employees. A special thank-you to Clarence Smith for his leadership and his company’s generous gift of office space. Havertys is a wonderful corporate citizen!

15 JULY 1, 2012 - JUNE 30, 2013 FRIENDS of THE FOUNDATION We are thankful to our Friends for supporting the cost of providing planned giving services, grants programs, and endowment management in our Catholic community. 18 “Nobody is so poor that he has nothing to give, and nobody is so rich that he has nothing to receive.”

A Letter From The Chair 2012 - 2013 Dear Friend of The Catholic Foundation: STATEMENT of The signs of significant growth are everywhere in the most recent operating year of The Catholic Foundation. A year ago, the Foundation managed 157 funds totaling $38.10 million. That has grown to 169 funds and FINANCE $42.7 million, an increase of 12 percent.

It’s not just the assets that have grown. As this report clearly shows, the Foundation has extended its supportive hands further into the community with its endowment distributions and grant-giving programs totaling more than $1.1 million. Measured by those indicators, the Foundation has grown by 17 percent in only one year!

We have a long list of people to thank for this progress.

Individuals have made bequests. Families have turned their small foundations over to be managed as donor-advised funds.

Parishioners and alumni continue to donate to the endowments that support their beloved parishes and schools.

Many donors send gifts to support our day-to-day operations. All are greatly appreciated.

I am proud to work with an engaged board of directors and a devoted staff. Our board members provide time, talent, counsel, and financial support to the Foundation. This has allowed us to keep administrative costs at an efficient level. And now, as a result, we’ve been blessed with incredible growth.

Thank you for being a part of this wonderful cause.

Sincerely,

William M. Rich Board of Directors, Chair
