We have raised enough money to place 3 ultrasound machines and I am told that shortly after the first of the year, councils in one district will send enough for a 4th machine. We hope to place the first of these in the next few weeks and the others as soon as 3 more centers receive the medical certifications necessary for them to accept the machines. State Pro-Life Chairman David Canale and PGK Paul Zock of Dalton are doing great things in this area.

In June, 120 wheelchairs were donated to VA hospitals in , Augusta, and Dublin. We have raised enough to order the next shipment of wheelchairs which will be donated to Children‟s Hospitals in Georgia with a few going to each diocese in Georgia for use by priests or religious who may need them. “Georgia - Living the Vision of the Our Charity raffle brought in over $33,000 dollars (up from $20,000 last year.) The raffle was moved from Spring to Autumn at the request of several councils who wanted to take care of local charities before next summer. We have brought over 450 new members into the order and in January we will institute a new council in Norcross. We now have more than 14,000 Knights of Columbus in Georgia. Georgia continues to be recognized as a leader in the Order. This was evidenced by the election of our Immediate Past State Deputy, Dan Baker, to the Board of Directors at the 127th Meeting of the Supreme Council. I want to thank every Brother Knight in Georgia for all you have done to serve our Church and communities and to help our order grow. During the next year let each one of us truly live the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism; the vision of the Venerable Servant of God, Father Michael J. McGivney.

Page 3 The Christopher Columbus Navigator The Jedlicka General Agency Has Moved By John Jedlicka - General Field Agent By the grace of God and through the hard work of your Field Agents the Jedlicka Agency moved into new offices on De- cember 1 quadrupling the space the Agency already occupied. Continual growth in the number of Field Agents necessi- tated the new office space which includes separate workstations for the agents and a The Jedlicka Agency conference room where the agents can meet individually with clients. 1720 Old Spring House Lane In December the Agency added a new Field Agent for the Savannah area and ex- Suite 300B Dunwoody GA 30338-6215 pects to bring on another agent for Northeast Georgia. This brings the Agency to 10 770.455.6313 Field Agents but there still is room for more. Again, Brothers, I ask you for recom- mendations of qualified men you know who are interested in a career with your Order‟s insurance program. Next year will bring several enhancements to your Order‟s insurance program including new products, better database management systems and an enhanced underwriting process. All these make the best insurance program available only better. Of special importance will be a new contact management program I have installed in the Agency. It‟s a simple email program that allows instant and personal contact of our members. The key to this program is the availability of email addresses of our members. The Field Agents have requested email lists from those Councils they serve. If you do not currently have an assigned agent please send your email address to me, preferably in Excel format. This will take time to build and I appreciate your cooperation. The last ten months have gone by as if they were two weeks. I am deeply grateful for the support, encouragement and cooperation I and my Field Agents have received from Brother Knights statewide and the Jurisdiction‟s State and District officers As we near the wonderfully holiday celebrating the birth of our Lord I and all the Field Agents wish you and yours a Blessed and Merry Christmas with our best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year. 4th Degree Exemplification Progress By Herb Broughton - District Master We have had two successful Exemplifications so far this Fall. The first was in Savannah on October 10, when a class of 40 was exemplified honoring T. Frank Baker of Immaculate Conception Assembly. Then in November, a class of 196 was exemplified in Atlanta honoring Most Rev. John Francis Donoghue of Gerald P. O'Hara Assembly. Both Ex- emplifications used the new Fourth Degree which was praised by all who attended as a great improvement over the old form. A third Exemplification is scheduled for Albany, on February 27, 2010. Details will be sent in a letter to all Assem- blies soon. The Biennial District Assembly Meeting will be held on Saturday March 20, 2010, at Holy Spirit Church, Macon, Ga. Lunch will be served at 11:30 AM, with the meeting to follow immediately after lunch. Further details and Delegate num- bers will follow in a letter in January. Put this very important meeting on your calendar now! Thanks to the Assemblies who have already donated to the Degree Team Equipment Fund. Hope to hear from the rest of the Assemblies soon. Keep up the good work within each of your Assemblies. Time Flies When You’re Having Fun By Mark Corrigan - State Program Chairman We are already at the half way point of the fraternal year. Time certainly flies when you‟re having fun doesn‟t it? I hope that everyone had a blessed Christmas & a Happy New Year. Now that we are entering a new decade we look toward the future. Our State Convention is rapidly approaching and that means submission of your State Programs. I‟m in the process of calling all of the Grand Knights to inform them of the new category in the Order, “Pro Life”. I am also calling to offer the help of the Program committee. If you have any issues preparing your program for submission, we are here to help you. My email and phone number are in the State directory. You may submit your program at any time throughout the fraternal year. We have only received two entries so far. Remember; the deadline for submission is April 10th, 2010. I have to have your submission in my hands no later than April 15th. To be fair to all councils, programs received after April 15th will not be considered. We have one of the most active states in the order. Tell the Georgia Knights of Columbus Story with your programs. Let the Principles of our order compel us to be inspired by their ennobling virtues and inspire us to walk proudly as we call ourselves “Knights of Columbus.”

Volume 9 Issue 1 Page 4 Special Olympics Gala - We Need Your Help By Mike Feeney - Special Olympics Gala Chairman Early in the year 2000 The "Special Olympics" was founded by Eunice Shriver who was a wife of a 4th degree Knight. In 2004, The State Council became the official presenters of the Colors by the Honor Guard at the annual Olympic Summer Games. In January of 2005, the Ga. State Council became the official sponsor of the Geor- gia Special Olympics Winter Games. In June of 2005, the State Council was named the official sponsor of the Special Olympic Ath- letes to the National Summer Games. In the Spring of 2009, the Georgia State Council was offered the opportunity to sponsor and host "Camp Inspire" - A summer camp for Special Olympics' Geor- gia Athletes. In order to support Camp Inspire, the State Council by way of Co- lumbian Charities Inc. (501c3 Corp.) are celebrating a "Camp In- spire Gala". It will be at the Marriott Hotel, Century Center Atlanta on Friday, February 12th, at 6:00pm. The Gala will last 'til midnight. It will be a black-tie (optional) dance and dinner. There will be lots of wine, raffles, silent and oral auctions, and your wife will think you are the "hero." There will be a cash bar. Rooms are available at $79.00 per night. The Gala is 3 miles from Lenox Mall the highest volume mall in the Southeast. The price is $125 per ticket. Your District Deputies can fill you in on the details. For further information, contact me (email - [email protected]).

Pro-Life Knights on the March! By David Canale - State Pro-Life Chairman My Brother Knights, I thank each and every one of you for your Pro-Life efforts so far this Fraternal Year. I especially want to recognize the efforts of St. Catherine of Siena Council 9923 in Kennesaw. They have raised enough money to purchase three ultrasound machines in crisis pregnancy centers around the state. We have submitted the necessary paperwork for our matching funds from Supreme and hope to have them shortly. We have located two centers to accept a machine and are hot on the trail of the third. I also want to thank all of the other councils from around the state that have contributed to this cause. Every donation, no matter what size, helps us help these centers. Please mark your calendars for January 22, 2010, the “Together For Life Rally” at the GA state capitol in downtown Atlanta. Archbishop Gregory is scheduled to speak at this event. Please go to the following link for additional information about this event: www.grtl.org/eventschedule.asp. I have received 1,000 Knights of Columbus “We Choose Life” signs for this day, and I would like to hand them out to 1,000 Knights on that day! Please come down for the day and show your support to end abortion and other assaults on innocent life. Knights in regalia (no swords, please) are also welcome to march. Please plan on coming down as a group. Bring your council banners, too. Finally, just a reminder that Pro-Life is now a separate sixth program area. That means that a council must complete four programs in that area to qualify for Star Council. Please make sure that your council is scheduling and completing these programs. They don‟t need to be fancy--a Pro-Life rosary on the Day of the Unborn Child, a fundraiser for the ultrasound initiative, collecting clothing and baby items for a pregnancy center, and sending a group to the “Together For Life Rally” adds up to 4 programs. Get thinking, get working, and get it done! Important - New Wheelchair Partner By Greg Howe - Wheelchair Fund Coordinator This concerns our new relationship with the American Wheelchair Mission. Since 2003, Brother Knight Chris Lewis has coordinated Knights of Columbus participation in the humanitarian mission of delivering wheelchairs to disabled people in the United States and abroad who could not afford to buy them. Over the course of the past six years, Knights have purchased and donated some 20,000 wheelchairs, chang- ing and improving the lives of entire families, answering prayers, and making dreams come true. In addition, thou- sands of men have joined the Knights of Columbus because they wanted to participate in this noble mission. Earlier this year, Chris launched the new American Wheelchair Mission, which is now the officially recognized

Page 5 The Christopher Columbus Navigator District Happenings - “Didjano That. . .” DISTRICT 1 - (DD Lemuel Campbell) . . . This year, as in years past, Savannah Council 631 held its “Light Up for Christ” celebration at the Cathedral Parish Center on Lafayette Square on December1. Father Douglas Clark blessed the Nativity scene assembled by Brother Robert Sokolowski. Grand Knight Walt Harper offered the General Intercessions. The barbershop quartet “Fully Invested” provided the music. A parish supper followed. The “Light up for Christ celebration is set up so that passersby can be reminded of the “Reason for the Season.” DISTRICT 10 - (DD Ken Lucier) . . . St. Oliver Plunkett Council (#13440) in Snellville has provided some “Military Christmas Cheer,” and has outdone it‟s previous year initial effort to send Christmas Cheer packages to our Military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan! Last year (2008) they were able to collect enough to fill 35 care packages. This year they sent 145 overstuffed care packages to our Military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan! WOW! The Council was able to enlist the Parish community‟s aid to contribute foodstuffs, DVD‟s, and treats to send to the troops. And some pa- rishioners also contributed funds to pay for the shipping costs (a significant cost). On packing day over 20 people, including some Parish young people, banded together with the Knights to sort, fill, and label the packages. Another great example of a KofC Council and a Parish working together for the common good. . . . The Lawrenceville St. Marguerite D‟Youville Council (12905) held a “Seafood for Sonograms” Fall Fish Fry in conjunction with Re- spect for Life month. Although it‟s unusual to hold a Fish Fry in the Fall it was well received by the parish community. This Fish Fry was held to raise funds for the Council‟s project to buy an ultrasound machine for a local pregnancy center. It was a night of Food, Trivia, and Music with approximately 125 attending. Overall they raised more than $600 towards their goal. DISTRICT 16 - (DD Vin O’Reilly) . . . During the last three months, District #16 Councils conducted a variety of service and fund raising programs. Highlights include 2 very successful Baby Bottle fundraisers for the Culture of Life by the St Monica‟s and St Brendan‟s Councils, a gener- ous Support our Troops program by the St Benedict‟s Council, a creative Pig Roast fundraiser by the Southern Catholic College Council and a successful Sausage Dinner program by the Good Shepherd Council. The second half of the fraternal year promises to be both exciting and rewarding for their five Councils. Recruiting and Retention remains our top priority for the next six months. Each Council has a targeted recruiting program in place and their increased focus on retention is producing some very positive results. Congratulations to FDD Stan Rapciewicz for achieving the Star District Award for Columbian year „08-„09. The Solemnity of Mary By Supreme Chaplain - Bishop William E Lori The Church invites us to begin each new calendar year by celebrating the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. Instead of trivial New Year‟s resolutions, this feast, which brings the Octave of Christmas to a close, reminds us that the real new beginning came about when Jesus was “born of the Virgin Mary.” The Word of God, the only Son of the Father, has come into the world to make all things new (see Jn 1:1, Rev. 21:5). The newness of Jesus and of the life he came to give us can be glimpsed in Christ‟s birth and his “hidden” years in Nazareth. These are the very mysteries that the Liturgy presents to us in these days and, once again, it is where our study of the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church resumes. When we speak about the “newness” of Jesus, this does not mean that he was simply a very interesting personality or someone with a fresh perspective. Rather, Christ is utterly unique as Lord and Savior. In accordance with God‟s mysterious plan for the salvation of the world, the eternal Son of the Father “took flesh and was born of the Virgin Mary” (Eucharistic Prayer II). While there have been many important religious figures and philosophers throughout history, none will ever equal or replace Jesus. Some- times, even well-intentioned efforts at interfaith dialogue end up relativizing Jesus — that is, seeing him as a tremendously important reli- gious figure but not the one and only Savior. However, our faith resoundingly attests that there is “no other name” by which we can be saved (see Act 4:12). All who are saved, including those “who seek God with a sincere heart” (see Good Friday Liturgy), are saved only by the love of Jesus Christ. Thus, official Church documents such as Dominus Jesus, issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2000, insist on what is called the “unicity” and “universality” of the Lord Jesus, the Savior. In the Apostle‟s Creed, we profess that Jesus “was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.” In effect, we proclaim that Christ “is the Son of the heavenly Father according to his divine nature and is the Son of Mary according to his human nature” (Compendium, 98). Often, especially during this time of year, the Liturgy invokes Christ as “Son of God and Son of Mary.” This does not (See “Solemnity” Continued on page 7)

Page 6 The Christopher Columbus Navigator (“Solemnity” Continued from page 6) mean that Jesus is two persons cobbled into one. Rather, as the Compendium puts it, Jesus is “truly the Son of God in both natures (divine and human) since here is in him only one Person, who is divine” (Ibid.). Of course, no other religious figure makes or can make that claim. In both the Liturgy and in private devotions, we lovingly speak of Mary as Virgin and Mother. This, too, bespeaks the “newness” of Jesus. In Catholic doctrine, Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. When we hear references in Scripture to Jesus‟ “brothers and sisters,” we may think that Mary had other children after the birth of Jesus. However, these are rightly understood as close relatives of Christ, not his actual siblings (see Compendium, 99). This is sometimes a point of discussion with some non-Catholic Christians who do not believe in Mary‟s perpetual virginity. However, Mary‟s virginity and motherhood are linked. In giving birth to her one son, the Incarnate Son of God, Mary‟s pure love and spiri- tual motherhood extends to all whom Christ came to save. Far from being sterile, Mary‟s virginity is abundantly fruitful in bringing the Savior into the world and in helping us as members of the Church to live the new life he won for us. Indeed, Mary plays an essential role in God‟s plan of redemption. Not only did she bring the Savior into the world, but she is also the ultimate model of the Church, which is to be both virginal in the purity of her teaching and motherly in her love for all her sons and daughters. The “newness” of Christ is also understood as a revelation of the Father‟s love. Christ revealed himself by assuming our human nature and, in doing so, demonstrated something we could never have known with unaided human reason: “the invisible mystery of his divine sonship” (Compendium, 101). As Jesus declared to Philip: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (Jn 14:9). In revealing himself, Jesus also revealed the entire plan of salvation decreed in the hidden counsels of God (see Eph 1:3-14, Col 1:26). Thus, the life of Christ is a “mystery” not in the sense that it is something impossible to understand, but rather that it reveals the unseen life of God and his hidden plan for the salvation of the world. In his plan of redemption, God prepared the world for the coming of Christ through the ages. Even in the hearts of those who did not know the living God, he awakened a longing for his presence. God revealed himself to the Chosen People, teaching them through the prophets to hope for definitive deliverance. In a more immediate sense, the ministry of St. John the Baptist prepared for Christ‟s birth, “the dawn from on high.” (Lk 1:78; see Compendium, 102). Even the mysteries of Christ‟s infancy — such as the Epiphany, the presentation in the temple and the Holy Family‟s flight into and return from Egypt — reveal truths about God‟s saving plan (Compendium, 103). Likewise, we may learn much by meditating on the “hidden life” of Jesus and the simplicity, love and obedience of the Holy Family (104). To begin his public life and ministry, Jesus received John‟s baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Lk 3:3). Though he was sinless, Christ identified with all of humanity and, in so doing, was revealed to be “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (Jn 1:29). The Liturgy tells us that Jesus was baptized “in waters made holy by the one who was baptized” (Preface for John the Baptist). In this way, Jesus‟ baptism prefigures our own baptism. Let us live joyfully the “newness” of life imparted to us. May the light of Christ shine ever more brightly in our hearts as we continue to mediate on the mystery of the Word made flesh.

Knights of Columbus partner for the distribution of wheelchairs (www.amwheelchair.org). We hope that you will encourage your councils and assemblies to participate in this worthy apostolate by contacting Chris directly at [email protected] or (805) 205-0069. State officers, District Deputies, and Grand Knights, please circulate this information to all concerned parties. Before founding the American Wheelchair Mission, Chris had been associated with an organization known as the Wheelchair Foundation, through which he coordinated the purchase and distribution of wheelchairs with Knights of Columbus. Please note that the Knights of Columbus no longer recognizes the Wheelchair Foundation as an official charitable partner. There has been some confusion in this regard as the Wheelchair Foundation continues to solicit contributions from K of C councils and members, notwithstanding the termination of our partnership with them. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Supreme Associate General Counsel Michael Votto at [email protected] or (203) 752-4077.
