In only ten years, Soul Asylum rose from a college underground band with indie punk roots to critically acclaimed rock stars. Their most memorable hit, Runaway Train, peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, raised album sales to a double‐platinum level, and won Soul Asylum the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1994. This commercial success catapulted the group into a household name, landing them a performance at the 1992 Clinton inauguration. In 1995, Soul Asylum followed up the success of Grave Dancers Union with Let Your Dim Light Shine, which climbed to #6 on the Billboard 200 and featured the #1 Modern Rock track Misery. After releasing the album Candy from a Stranger in 1998, the band members took a break from recording and didn't release a new studio album for the better part of seven years. The band reunited in 2004 to record their ninth full‐length album and in 2006, The Silver Lining was released and dedicated to the late bassist Karl Mueller and his life and memory. Saratoga natives, dada In 1992, dada, the alternative rock band, whose members grew up in Saratoga and graduated from Saratoga High School, exploded on the scene with their critically acclaimed debut release, ‐more‐ Puzzle. The album hit #2 on Billboard’s Heatseeker Chart on Miles Copeland’s I.R.S. Record, selling more than a half million copies and capturing a number of critics “Best of Year” lists. The single “Dizz Knee Land,” climbed to #5 on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and set the alternative radio movement – just then hitting its stride – on fire. The group’s music quickly migrated to mainstream rock and pop stations. The third single “Dim” made it to #24 on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and further solidified dada’s reputation as a band to watch. The band toured, both as headliners on the club circuit and as openers for Sting, Izzy Stradlin & the Ju Ju Hounds and Material Issue (USA), Crowded House (UK), and Depeche Mode (Portugal). In September 1994, dada released American Highway Flower, hitting #5 on Billboard’s Heatseeker Chart — which had a harder feel, both musically and lyrically, than its predecessor, reflecting the band’s evolution from a studio to a touring band. The single, “All I Am,” spent eight weeks on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks Chart. But the exquisite El Subliminoso was perhaps the group’s most artistically complex and satisfying offering. Soul Asylum and dada is the third concert in the 2011 ARTTEC Summer Concert Series at Montalvo’s charming and intimate Lilian Fontaine Garden Theater. ARTTEC is an innovative partnership between Montalvo and the Sobrato Arts Foundation for Education that provides hands‐on training and mentoring for high school students in the performing arts industry. Throughout the concert series, students will work directly with concert production professionals and high‐caliber artists in learning about the performing arts business and backstage production, while gaining real‐world work experience. Every ticket sold in the summer concert series supports both nonprofit arts institutions. The Montalvo Experience: Surrounded by Italianate gardens and a stunning Mediterranean Villa, concertgoers are encouraged to picnic on the historic grounds or enjoy delicious offerings from the on‐ site concessions before the performance.
