Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira – Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto April 26, 2014 Rabbi Van Lanckton Temple B’nai Shalom Braintree, Massachusetts In the aftermath of World War II, a construction worker laying the foundation for a new building on the site of the destroyed Warsaw ghetto came across a container buried in the earth. Inside were manuscripts written in Hebrew characters. The manuscripts were taken to the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw for analysis. At the top of the bundle of writings was a cover letter written in Yiddish. It began with the word AUFMERKZAM followed by three exclamation points. “Aufmerkzam” means “Attention.” Here is the text of that Yiddish letter: By the grace of God. I respectfully request the honored individual or institution that will find my following writings concerning the Torah readings from the years 5700, 5701 and 5702 to be so kind as to take the trouble to forward them to the land of Israel at the following address: “Rabbi Isaiah Shapira, Tel Aviv, Palestine.” Please send this letter as well. When, with God’s compassion, I and the remaining Jews will survive the war, I request that everything be returned to me or to the Warsaw rabbinate for Kalonymus. May God have mercy on us, the remnant of Israel, wherever we may be. May He spare us, grant us life, and save us in the twinkling of an eye. With thanks from the depth of my heart. Kalonymus The years 5700, 5701 and 5702 correspond to the years 1939 to 1942. The date of the letter, written under the signature, was “the evening before the second day of the week of Parashat Va-Era, 27 Tevet, 5703.” That date was Sunday evening, January 3, 1943. -

FEDERATION PROGRAMS Teachers Reflect on their P2G Experience Four Chattanooga teachers recently traveled to Israel as part of the P2G (Partnership Together) program. Here are their summaries of their experiences. Riki Jordan Odineal: As an educator, there is nothing better than experiencing the education system of another area or country. When I went on the P2G Educator's Delegation over winter break, I knew I was in for a special trip. I was not disappointed! I spent two days at Mevoot Eron High School in Hadera in history, geography, art, and science classrooms. This is the kibbutz school for the four kibbutzim in the area. The students were engaged and curious. They also enjoyed the pencils, Little Debbies, and homemade tzedekeh box (made by my Sunday school class) I brought with me. I also had the opportunity to stay on a kibbutz with my new Israeli family. I stayed on Kibbutz Barkai, which is 15 minutes northeast of Hadera. There are no words for the warmth and hospitality I received from everyone on the kibbutz. I've never had more fresh produce in my life! I was definitely a fan of kib- butz life. Most importantly, I made many connections in both our Southeastern Region in the U.S. and our partnership region in Israel. It was amazing networking with our Israeli counterparts and planning future activities between our schools. We've also made plans to socialize with our Nashville and Knoxville coun- terparts. This trip was life-changing, and I am so thankful to the Federation for the opportunity! The Way to the Tree of Life Jewish practice entails fulfilling many laws. Our diet is limited, our days to work are defined, and every aspect of life has governing directives. Is observance of all the laws easy? Is a perfectly righteous life close to our heart and near to our limbs? A righteous life seems to be an impossible goal! However, in the Torah, our great teacher Moshe, Moses, declared that perfect fulfillment of all religious law is very near and easy for each of us. CEU eTD Collection Abstract Holocaust raised many theological and philosophical problems that questioned and doubted all previous human experience. Many believers asked is it possible to keep faith in God after mass exterminations, many thinkers were concerned with a future of philosophy that seemed to lose its value, facing unspeakable and unthinkable. There was another ontological question – how to fix all the damage, caused by Holocaust (if it is possible at all), how to prevent new catastrophes and to make the world a better place to live. On a junction of these problems two great works appeared – Esh Kodesh (The Holy Fire) by Kalonymus Kalmish Shapira and To Mend the World by Emil Fackenheim. The first was a Hassidic leader, the Rabbi of the Polish town Piaseczno and also the Rabbi in the Warsaw ghetto, who didn’t survive Holocaust but spent rest of his days, helping and comforting his Hasidim likewise other fellow Jews. -

Basic facts about the Aish Kodesh u Kalonymus Kalman Shapira was a Grand Rabbi of Piaseczno, Poland. u He was murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. u He was deeply focused on the education of children and young men, establishing the yeshiva Da’as Moshe in 1923 which became one of the largest Chassidic yeshivot in Warsaw between the wars. u His most important and well-known work is Chovas HaTalmidim. u After the invasion of Poland, Rabbi Shapira was interned with a few of his chassidim in the Warsaw Ghetto, where he ran a secret synagogue. He invested enormous efforts inmaintaining Jewish life in the ghetto, including arranging for mikveh immersions and kosher marriages. u Rabbi Shapira is well-known for a book that he wrote while in the ghetto. The book, which is a compilation of weekly sermons to his students, contends with complex questions of faith in the face of the mounting suffering of the Jews in the ghetto. When it became apparent to Rabbi Shapira that the end of the ghetto and all its inhabitants was near, he buried the book in a canister. This canister was found by a construction worker after the end of the war. The book was published in Israel in 1960 under the title Aish Kodesh. David Bashevkin Rabbi Bashevkin is the director of education for NCSY and an instructor at Yeshiva University. He recently published Sin·a·gogue: Sin and Failure in Jewish Thought. JEWISH THOUGHT: A PROCESS, NOT A TEXT am deeply uncomfortable with the term “Jewish thought.” Its sibling, “mahshava” and its more formal uncle, “Mahashevet Yisrael,” make me Ifeel no better. Allow me to ignore altogether their uneducated cousin “hashkafa,” a term so vacuous it barely deserves our attention. There are several reasons I do not like these terms. First of all, they divorce these texts from the larger body of Jewish literature from which they arise. Cordoning off ideas with philosophical import was not practiced by the Talmud, nor by Maimonides in his Mishne Torah, and the idea of doing so was explicitly lamented by Rabbi Shmuel Eidels, known as Maharsha, in the introduction to his talmudic commentary.1 “I regret my initial decision to divide up my commentary into two separate works,” he writes, “namely, one on aggada and one on halakha.” Classifi cations and specialization, while often necessary and commonly accepted in academic circles, strips the fl avor and richness away from Jewish ideas. Jewish thought divorced from halakhic and, more broadly, talmudic discourse, can feel like caging a wild animal. A tiger in a zoo may be majestic, but it is clearly not in its natural habitat. The context in which ideas emerge, Jewish or otherwise, is part of what nourishes their signifi cance. Philosophical ideas cannot be taken out of context. Whether it is a consideration of the broader talmudic context, the larger work in which they appear, or the historical framework—context matters. -

[Every now and then a book can be so effectively affective that one can even experience a visceral reaction. Eric Remarqué’s All Quiet on the Western Front was one of those for me. At many points I felt as if I had been bayoneted in the stomach. The other book that has left me utterly breathless has been Elie Wiesel’s Night. The following is a series of notes composed in response way back in early 2001, a therapeutic way of dealing with the experience in many ways. With the political growth of the right and the burgeoning of a culture of cruelty over at least the Western world, it seemed like a good time for me to dust this off and upload it again.] Elie Wiesel’s Night: Losing Hope in Theo-logy Dr. John C. McDowell Meldrum Lecturer in Systematic Theology New College, University of Edinburgh For many the death-camps of Nazi Germany have come to provide a devastating image of the heart of the twentieth century, a transformative event in the formation of the consciousness of particularly, but not exclusively, western peoples. “We come after”, announces George Steiner, “and that is the nerve of our condition.” [Language and Silence (Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1958), 22] He continues, We cannot act now, be it as critics or merely as rational beings, as if nothing of vital relevance had happened to our sense of the human possibility, as if the extermination by hunger or violence of some seventy million men, women and children in Europe and Russian between 1914 and 1945 had not altered, profoundly, the quality of our awareness.
