Hull History Centre: Papers of Alan Plater U DPR Papers of Alan Plater 1936-2012 Accession number: 1999/16, 2004/23, 2013/07, 2013/08, 2015/13 Biographical Background: Alan Frederick Plater was born in Jarrow in April 1935, the son of Herbert and Isabella Plater. He grew up in the Hull area, and was educated at Pickering Road Junior School and Kingston High School, Hull. He then studied architecture at King's College, Newcastle upon Tyne, becoming an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1959 (since lapsed). He worked for a short time in the profession, before becoming a full-time writer in 1960. His subsequent career has been extremely wide-ranging and remarkably successful, both in terms of his own original work, and his adaptations of literary works. He has written extensively for radio, television, films and the theatre, and for the daily and weekly press, including The Guardian, Punch, Listener, and New Statesman. Journal of American Studies of Turkey 39 (2014): 113-122 Mako Mori and the Gender Politics of Pacific Rim (2013) Nathanael Hood Carefully balancing on the top of an escape pod somewhere in the South China Sea, pilots Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kukuchi) embrace after successfully saving the world from an invasion of giant, extra-dimensional monsters known as “kaiju.” This ending from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (2013) seems to cohere to traditional narrative tropes within the Western action genre wherein the hero triumphantly kisses his love interest after a great struggle, battle, or fight. And yet, a close inspection of this scene reveals a shocking subversion of this reliable concluding scenario: Becket and Mori do not kiss. They draw close, touch foreheads, and even lean in for a hug as the screen cuts to the credits. But again, they do not consummate their victory with a kiss. The absence of a kiss wasn’t an oversight on del Toro’s part. In fact, it was a conscious creative choice, recounting in an interview that he had filmed three different versions of the scene including one where they did kiss. Del Toro said: “We did one version where they kiss and it almost felt weird. They’re good friends, they’re pals, good colleagues” (qtd. Faraci). The idea that two (supposedly) heterosexual heroes would not fall in love during the course of a film and instead become good friends seems oddly counter-intuitive. For western audiences, the development of romantic feelings concluding with a kiss between the protagonist and their love interest is quintessential for creating a sense of narrative closure (Doane 196). -

Born in 1964, the son of a plasterer and leaving for Leeds University in 1982, my formative years in Liverpool and deep early impressions of the city were shaped by the 1970s /80s. One of the few positive benefits of attending an under-funded, inner-city comprehensive school in Liverpool was perhaps the number of subjects and interests we attempted to cover and a resultant affinity for eclecticism.1 From sports to school plays to a terrible school orchestra, I had a go at everything and at times the loose structure meant that when I was caught out of 1 I attended Holt Comprehensive between 1975-82. -

Are our children really in crisis, or the victims of parents' anxiety? A major new report, out tomorrow, reveals that Britain's children are afraid of bullying, stressed by schoolwork and beset by concerns over relationships and abuse. But is 21st-century existence really that awful for our youngsters? Or is childhood being undermined by adult fears and aversion to risk? It was, children were told, "the best days of their life", during which the exuberance of youth could be enjoyed unadulterated by responsibilities or cares. It is not hard to think that such days may be gone. Experts warn that young people are suffering from stress and anxiety, parents are too scared to let their children play freely and newspaper headlines paint a picture of Britain in which childhood is fast disappearing. For children like 13-year-old Eleanor, things feel hopeless. "I'm so worried about the effect of the credit crunch on my family," she said. "I got sent home from school last week because I just started crying and couldn't stop. I feel like I'm having a breakdown." Last year, ChildLine received calls from 195,485 children desperate for help. Many had specific problems. Others, like 16-year-old Kwame, couldn't identify the source of their misery. "I've been on antidepressants for a year and have considered taking an overdose," he said. -

J’ai tout de suite su que je voulais transposer ces livres en films. J’étais absolument abasourdi par l’imagination, l’audace et l’intelligence de ces livres. La plume de Pullman va de la vie de tous les jours au métaphysique, et son impressionnante trilogie est un testament au nom de la liberté et du potentiel de l’âme humaine. Les Royaumes du Nord, le premier livre de la trilogie, offre tous ce qu’un réalisateur peut espérer – une histoire captivante, des personnages fascinants, une profondeur psychologique et philosophique, et une très respectable merveille en son cœur. Pour moi, il n’y avait pas de meilleur challenge que de m’y consacrer dans les années à venir.
