She also happens to be a senior year Equity Studies and Political Science student. She looks forward to seeing Cana- dian Studies evolve as a self-re"exive #eld that thoroughly excavates and recognizes its settler foundations as a study of unceded First Nations territory. Eden Abramowitz is a U3 McGill undergraduate student who is studying Art His- tory. With a personal interest in Aboriginal art and life, Eden has focused her re- search on the reconciliation of Native material culture in the Canadian and interna- tional art markets. She plans on furthering her studies as a Master’s candidate in Art, Law and Business at Christie’s Education London following graduation, and hopes to continue contributing to scholarship on indigenous art, economies and policies. Alexandra Lewyckyj is a U3 student at McGill University, graduating in Spring 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in World Religions and Canadian Studies. Born and raised in Montreal, Alexandra is in"uenced by her dual identities as both a Cana- dian and a diasporic Ukrainian. A member of the Class of 2018 at New York City’s Cardozo School of Law, she lives in St-Henri with her partner, Paul, and their retired racing greyhound, Sam. Cerian Phillips will be graduating this spring with a major in Art History and mi- nors in Anthropology and American History. Her interests are museum studies and contemporary art and she plans to eventually pursue an MA in curatorial studies. Katherine Ragan is a native Montrealer who recently completed her degree in Eco- nomics and Honours Political Science. She focused her degree towards Canadian and global health policy, and hopes to pursue graduate studies in public health in the near future. She also has a keen interest in matters of Canadian and Quebec na- tionalism and the politics of provincial-federal relationships. Chris Gismondi is a U1 Art History and History student, new to McGill. Chris is also a conceptual artist dealing largely with themes of self-identity, repetition and emotional healing. !e work under analysis, Romantic Canada, has recently been re-published for its «cultural importance» and it is important to view the work with a critical contemporary lens and make sure it does not lose its queer heritage. Chris has an interest in critical new art history incorporating queer theory, post-colonial- ism, feminisms and identity politics into scholarship. Jaya Bordeleau-Cass is an undergraduate student from Montréal, currently com- pleting a Joint Honours degree in Anthropology and Canadian Studies at McGill University. In solidarity with Indigenous Peoples worldwide, her work focuses on issues of social and environmental justice. Jaya is passionate about encouraging meaningful dialogue and cultural exchanges based on respect and integrity. Juliette Allen is a Cultural Studies Major at McGill with a personal and academ- ic interest in Indigenous Womanism and Two-Spirit critique. !ey are passionate about Native political resistance as well as contemporary and underground Aborigi- nal art. Additionally, Juliette is a video artist and a musician based in Montreal & Los Angeles. !ey aspire to create spaces for intellectual thought, art and radicalism in holistic community development. Jelena Stankovic is in her last year of the English Literature Honours Program. When she’s not trying to write her thesis on H.D. and Ezra Pound (or spending too much time on Twitter), she enjoys watching Community, horseback riding, and looking for that perfect cup of co%ee. Next year she will be starting a Masters of In- formation degree at University of Toronto in Librarianship, with which she hopes to become a Children’s and Youth Librarian. Letter from the Editors It is our pleasure to bring you the sixth volume of Canadian Content, a di- verse and timely collection of essays that speak, in their variety, to the multi-faceted character of the #eld of Canadian Studies. We thank all those who submitted essays for contributing to the academic discussion of Canada, including those whose work is not published here. We are also grateful to the Arts Undergraduate Society and the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada for their generous #nancial support, and to our editorial board for their valuable insight. McGill’s department of Canadian Studies is committed, in its undergradu- ate program, to pursuing an interdisciplinary approach to Canadian issues. We be- lieve the complex questions arising from the study of Canada demand consideration from many perspectives, calling for an open discourse between academics of dif- ferent backgrounds. Yet, while the questions of highest relevance change from year to year, the challenge of de#ning ‘Canadian’ issues remains formidable, due to the vastness of the subject under analysis and the baggage resulting from its colonial history. In the academic milieu, ‘Canada’ can serve as shorthand for a variety of top- ics – a political body, a geographic space, an artistic/literary canon or a Northerly conceptual entity. Within the last half-century, the prevailing antidote to the search for a national characteristic has been diversity, in reference both to Canada’s ethno- cultural demography and its regional idiosyncrasies. !e dual promise of national unity and acceptance of di%erence has garnered wide appeal since Confederation in 1867, and its pursuit has since manifested at the level of federal politics in instances like the policies of multiculturalism and universal health care. In the cultural arena, public broadcasting seeks – and currently struggles - to create distinctly Canadian programming with popular appeal, while national museums try to represent a ver- sion of ‘heritage’ that can be claimed by all Canadians. Such nation-building projects have historically been intended to conceptu- ally unite people from disparate corners of this vast and varied terrain. Nonetheless, these top-down approaches to de#ning Canada result, many claim, in the erasure or alienation of certain groups, including French Canadians, and especially Indig- enous peoples. !e results of Quebec’s most recent provincial election imply a more welcoming attitude toward cultural diversity than is sometimes attributed the prov- ince, but Francophone Quebecers arguably still face the threat of cultural subsump- tion, as explored here in Katherine Ragan’s discussion of the Charter of Values, and Jelena Stankovic’s essay on the MMAQ. As Stankovic implies, authoritative cultural institutions like museums and galleries can impose a vision of national identity on visitors to a greater extent than they re"ect how Canadians see themselves. !is is especially problematic where the exhibition of Indigenous art – or artifacts – is concerned, as here expressed by Eden Abramowitz. Instances of cultural appropriation and the exoticization of Native people can also be seen in works by non-Native artists but concerning Na- tive subjects, demonstrates

A diverse range of contemporary art practices – including painting, drawing, photography, film, performance, installation and new media art – will be considered in relation to key aspects of the cultural, political and social life of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Much of the work examined reflects and responds to the continuing legacy of colonization and successive Canadian governments’ policies of assimilation and segregation. Artists, artworks and exhibitions examined will therefore be both historically and contemporarily contextualized. We will discuss the impact of the Indian Act, the establishment of Reserves and conflicts surrounding sovereignty and status, as well as the portrayal of Indigenous identity in art, popular culture and news media. Additionally, we will engage with the recent scholarship in Indigenous studies and material culture, and current events related to the theme of the course. The course is divided thematically, rather than chronologically, with weekly topics addressing significant aspects of Indigenous art and culture in Canada today.     Cracking the Glass Ceiling: Contemporary Inuit Drawing Nancy Campbell A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ART HISTORY, YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO. January 2017 © Nancy Campbell, 2017 Abstract The importance of the artist’s voice in art historical scholarship is essential as we emerge from post-colonial and feminist cultural theory and its impact on curation, art history, and visual culture. Inuit art has moved from its origins as an art representing an imaginary Canadian identity and a yearning for a romantic pristine North to a practice that presents Inuit identity in their new reality. This socially conscious contemporary work that touches on the environment, religion, pop culture, and alcoholism proves that Inuit artists can respond and are responding to the changing realities in the North. On the other side of the coin, the categories that have held Inuit art to its origins must be reconsidered and integrated into the categories of contemporary art, Indigenous or otherwise, in museums that consider work produced in the past twenty years to be contemporary as such. Holding Inuit artists to a not-so-distant past is limiting for the artists producing art today and locks them in a history that may or may not affect their work directly. This dissertation examines this critical shift in contemporary Inuit art, specifically drawing, over the past twenty years, known as the contemporary period. The second chapter is a review of the community of Kinngait and the role of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative in the dissemination of arts and crafts.

We are excited to see you and your students at the museum soon! This packet gives you some background on the Inuit people and outlines the goals of the Inuit Cultural Tours. Specific details of the tour (length of tour, art project, etc.) will vary with each group. Please refer to your tour confirmation sheet to verify specific details of your tour. There are three suggested pre- or post-activities and a list of possible lesson extensions included in the packet. Please use and alter any of these lessons as you wish to create an integrated unit of study and complete the museum learning experience for your students.     OTHERS AND OURSELVES: PORTRAITS OF ABORIGINAL PEOPLE BY EUROPEANS AND BY NATIVE AMERICANS Eliana Stratica Mihail and Zofia Krivdova This exhibition explores portraits of Aboriginal peoples in Canada, from the 18th to the 21st centuries. It is divided thematically into four sections: Early Portraits by European Settlers, Commercially-produced Postcards, Photographic Portraits of Aboriginal Artists, and Portraits of and by Aboriginal people. The first section deals with portraits of Aboriginal people from the 18th to the 19th century made by Europeans. They demonstrate an interest in the “other,” but also, with a few exceptions, a lack of knowledge—or disinterest in depicting their distinct physical features or real life experiences. The second section of the exhibition explores commercially produced portraits of First Nations peoples of British Columbia, which were sold as postcards. These postcards date from the 1920s, which represents a period of commercialization of Native culture, when European-Canadians were coming to British Columbia to visit Aboriginal villages and see totem poles. The third section presents photographic portraits of Aboriginal artists from the 20th century, showing their recognition and artistic realizations in Canada. This section is divided into two parts, according to the groups of Aboriginal peoples the artists belong to, Inuit and First Nations. The fourth section of the exhibition explores portraits of and by Aboriginals. The first section sharply contrasts with the last, showing the huge gap in mentality and vision between European settlers, who were just discovering this exotic and savage “other,” and Native artists, whose artistic expression is more spiritual and figurative. This exhibition also explores chronologically the change in the status of Aboriginal peoples, from the “primitive other” to 1 well-defined individuals, recognized for their achievements and contributions to Canadian society.

Watson albums, held in the photography collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), are a collection of 16 scrapbook style photographic albums that contain 1,070 gelatin silver prints created by Edith Watson and dated from 1890 to 1930. This thesis project explores a method of rehousing photographic albums with a focus on preserving the albums’ structure, the photographs, and the tactile experience of viewing an album, as well as facilitating access to these albums within the AGO’s collection through the creation of facsimile albums.

    3-D Artforms Inuit Soapstone Sculptures Mr. Faltinoski THE INUIT PEOPLE The Inuit are not strictly speaking, one group, rather they are numerous widely spread groups with varying regional artistic differences linked by a similar language and spirituality. The ancestors of contemporary Inuits migrated from northern Asia across a land bridge that existed at various times between present day Russia and Alaska. The first group was thought to have migrated around 40,000 years ago, a second around 25,000 years ago and finally about 10,000 years ago a group who are considered the orig- inators of the Inuit culture arrived. The first distinct cultural group appeared about 4 000 years ago and are called the Dorsets because evidence of their existence has been found around Cape Dorset. Generally, they had basic stone weapons, sleds without dog teams and simple arti- facts. The group who replaced the Dorest culture around 1500 AD was the Thule culture, and because of their more advanced skill development which included ivory and bone weapons, dog sleds, seal skin kayaks and umiaks they became the dominant group. The Arctic climate is the most inhospitable in the world for people to live, and it is a credit to the ingenuity of the Inuit and their ancestors that they have survived and adapted to the environmental rig- ors. Temperatures in winter can drop below -50 degrees and darkness or near darkness will last up to four months, while in the tundra only a few small hardy plants and lichen survive. With animals, birds and fish the main sources of food, the Inuit through necessity evolved as nomadic hunter-gatherers dependent entirely on what food the land offered.
