It was a big piece of work by the community and many involved and it was an honour to be on the working team. We have received very favourable comments back from Line Robert at ICET about our final report and I welcome your feedback. The following is the short note issued recently to the Cortes community by CIBATA, and paper copies of the report are making their way into the hands of key local people and organisations and a Community Economic Development Working Group is being formed to begin implementation of the report’s recommendations. The Cortes Island Business & Tourism Association (CIBATA) is proud to release our 2018 Cortes Local Economic Action Plan (LEAP). Initiated in 2016, after our 2015 Cortes Island Economic Development Forum, the LEAP plan is the result of 2 years of community engagement initiated by CIBATA members and the LEAP Community Steering Committee. The purpose of the LEAP was to engage the community of Cortes in designing a community economic development strategy, and to identify economic priorities and actions for the island other the next five years. In the coming months CIBATA members will be hosting a number of community workshops on island to share the key findings, recommendations and actions steps coming out of the report. It is within the traditional territory of the ƛohos (Klahoose), Tla’Amin, and Xwemalhkwu (Homalco) First Nations. All truly visionary economic planning must be developed within a framework of reconciliation. Economic Reconciliation nurtures relationship building and shared prosperity, ensuring opportunities for all peoples to achieve their full potential. It is our hope that this LEAP report will be an important step in furthering Economic Reconciliation on Cortes Island.
