DEWAR Abstract: This article argues that the lines separating different modes of thought on the centre-left of the political spectrum—liberalism, social democracy, and socialism, broadly speaking—are permeable, and that they share many features in common. The example of Tom Kent illustrates the argument. A leading adviser to Lester B. Pearson and the Liberal Party from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, Kent argued for expanding social security in a way that had a number of affinities with social democracy. In his paper for the Study Conference on National Problems in 1960, where he set out his philosophy of social security, and in his actions as an adviser to the Pearson government, he supported social assis- tance, universal contributory pensions, and national, comprehensive medical insurance. In close asso- ciation with his philosophy, he also believed that political parties were instruments of policy-making. The Edith S. Watson albums, held in the photography collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), are a collection of 16 scrapbook style photographic albums that contain 1,070 gelatin silver prints created by Edith Watson and dated from 1890 to 1930. This thesis project explores a method of rehousing photographic albums with a focus on preserving the albums’ structure, the photographs, and the tactile experience of viewing an album, as well as facilitating access to these albums within the AGO’s collection through the creation of facsimile albums.

    Truth, Justice, and the Canadian Way: The War-Time Comics of Bell Features Publications Ivan Kocmarek Hamilton, Ontario 148 What might be called the “First Age of Canadian Comics”1 began on a consum- mately Canadian political and historical foundation. Canada had entered the Second World War on September 10, 1939, nine days after Hitler invaded the Sudetenland and a week after England declared war on Germany. Just over a year after this, on December 6, 1940, William Lyon MacKenzie King led parliament in declaring the War Exchange Conservation Act (WECA) as a protectionist measure to bolster the Canadian dollar and the war economy in general. Among the paper products now labeled as restricted imports were pulp magazines and comic books.2 Those precious, four-colour, ten-cent treasure chests of American culture that had widened the eyes of youngsters from Prince Edward to Vancouver Islands immedi- ately disappeared from the corner newsstands. Within three months—indicia dates give March 1941, but these books were probably on the stands by mid-January— Anglo-American Publications in Toronto and Maple Leaf Publications in Vancouver opportunistically filled this vacuum by putting out the first issues of Robin Hood Comics and Better Comics, respectively. Of these two, the latter is widely considered by collectors to be the first true Canadian comic book becauseRobin Hood Comics Vol. 1 No. 1 seems to have been a tabloid-sized collection of reprints of daily strips from the Toronto Telegram written by Ted McCall and drawn by Charles Snelgrove. Still in Toronto, Adrian Dingle and the Kulbach twins combined forces to release the first issue of Triumph-Adventure Comics six months later (August 1941), and then publisher Cyril Bell and his artist employee Edmund T.

Coming from a similar perspective, but diverging from these reconstructive tenden- cies, the 97 artists participating in the exhibition (you can’t see) “The Forest for the Trees” respond to the title and concept of the project - in a myriad of ways from humorous charm to a certain disquietude. Anne O’Callaghan, Tree Symphony (eight movements) The dreaming body is free to dance amongst the trees weaving patterns into a geography. Hidden morphologies become rooted, lingering in silence and setting rhythms in motion. Walking into the forest, the trees absorb your body into a dance. By resisting the too distant, primal aspects of being here, each incident becomes a container for the senses. Signs and symbols arise slipping into the mental constructs of an imaginary forest. Shadows refl ect the whispers of wind moving between limbs. Your feet take root before vertical thrusts of growth, sounding. Touching hands shape a chorus of trees.     Of Her Own Volition: Barbara Godard as a Case Study of the Translator’s Agency Anne Sophie Voyer hat would Canadian literature be today without the efforts of Barbara Godard? The part that she played as “a creator and a cartographer” (Fuller 3) is reflected in her Wnumerous and diverse contributions to Canadian literature, especially her translations. In the past few decades, developments in translation studies have given the field the self-confidence and theoretical breadth to account for a wide variety of translation practices and an ever-grow- ing range of types of text. The necessarily interdisciplinary nature of the field calls on the neighbouring disciplines of linguistics, sociology, communication theory, discourse analysis, and pragmatics, not to men- tion literary theory, in order to bring into focus the world of translations and translators. This interdisciplinarity echoes Godard’s own prolific writing, which ranges from reflections on gender and sexuality, through discussions pertaining to feminist semiotics, all the way to studies of cultural memory and remembrance. If the earliest theories of translation tended to offer a somewhat restrictive Eurocentric perspective on the subject, scholars of translation today welcome more diversified perspec- tives. Outi Paloposki argues that “different theoretical frameworks do not necessarily compete with each other. Rather, difference may be seen as a question of supplementarity” (190), which ultimately strengthens the discipline as a whole. Surprisingly, the translator’s agency is not especially valued in critic- al work on translation. Although critics such as Antoine Berman and Lawrence Venuti tend to acknowledge the translator’s responsibility for his or her choices, a unified theoretical framework for the discus- sion and analysis of a translator’s agency has yet to be developed and universally adopted.
