Sanquhar Glove Swatching Worksheet Below, you will find directions for the pre-class work, vital to the success of making a glove that fits you! (Alternatively, you can skip the homework, pick a needle size and make the glove as a sampler, knowing it may not fit. However, work the ribbing in any case.) Please email me if you have any questions at [email protected]. Sanquhar Gloves are sized by adjusting the needle size and weight. To find the general for your hand, refer to the chart below. Then, select that needle size and one size smaller and one larger to determine an accurate gauge for your project.

Supplies • Needles: One set of four 7" (or shorter) double point needles (dpn), US sizes 000, 00, 0, or 1 (1.5, 1.75, 2.0, 2.25 mm), whichever size yields the gauge for your size in two color St st in the chart below, plus a dpn set larger and a dpn set smaller than the dpn size you have chosen for your gauge. • Yarn: 1.75 oz- 2 oz. balls /210-262 yards (~50 g./ 240 m) each of two colors (Main Color- MC, and Contrast Color- CC) of plain-textured, solid colored fingering or lace weight yarn, (See yarn suggestions at the end of this worksheet.) Mens' sizes may require two balls of each color. • Notions: Stitch markers, sticky notes or magnetic board to aid in reading the chart, tapestry needle, scraps of contrast color yarn, tape measure, .

SIZES Hand circumference is measured above the thumb. Allow for some ease in your measurement, adding 1/2" if you desire, then choose the size closest to that, shown below. Size Hand/Glove Gauge* Ndl Circumference

Child’s Medium 6/ 6.25" 28 sts #0000/1.25mm Child’s Large 6.5/ 6.75" 26 sts #000/1.5mm Woman’s Small/Medium 7/ 7.25" 24 sts #00/1.75mm Woman’s Large/Man’s Small 7.75/ 8" 22 sts #0/2.0mm Man’s Medium 8.5/ 8.75" 20 sts #1/2.25mm Man’s Large 9.5/ 9.75" 18 sts #2 /2.75mm

* Gauge is measured over two inches, worked in 2-color St st (see below). The needle sizes stated here are only a suggestion, as they are based on MY gauge! A gauge swatch is essential.

Directions Cast on 66 sts. Place marker and join in the round. Work a gauge swatch of the chart on the next page with your 2 as follows:

Work the following pattern, repeating the 22 stitches of the chart three times in each round. The 22 rounds of the chart will be worked in your smallest needle size, then the middle needle size, then your largest needle size. (If you like, you can separate the different gauges with a purl round or a different colored round after every 22 rounds.)

22-st repeat

To determine your gauge, take measurements of the three areas of your swatch before and after you wash and block the swatch. Select the needle size closest to your required gauge as follows:

Divide the total number of sts needed (8 motifs x 11 sts/motif = 88 sts in this case) by your hand measurement. This is the gauge you need to achieve. Select your needle size from your swatch. Record your measurements here:

The First Part of the Ribbing CC Cast on 80 sts with MC the MC darker yarn) and your chosen needle size, place marker, and join in the round. Work one of the following ribbings for 23 rnds (see Technique Box be- low). You may choose to knit or purl with the MC, and to purl or knit with the CC. Do not break your yarns. The cuff will be completed in class. Please bring to class your gauge swatch and all three sizes of needles you used in your swatch. Technique box: Avoiding the color

Some Appropriate Yarns crescent of the purl in the ribbing Uptonyarns.com: (Cotswold x Romney fingering) This is a good technique to use when working (www.uptonyarns.com) horizontal stripes of color, in vertical ribbing and, Froehlich Blauband in the Sanquhar Gloves, in the first round of two colors. Because of the nature of the purl stitch, the Schoeller+Stahl Fortissima previous color will appear above and below the Lang Jawoll new color. This is an advantage in corru- Dale Baby Ull gated ribbing because a wonderfully subtle color Patons Kroy gradation is achieved when many colors are used. Jaggerspun Zephyr However, when working with two colors there is high contrast, and the color change looks very obvi- Koigu ous-- almost like a mistake! Schachenmeyr Regia Brown Sheep Wildfoote To avoid this, you can KNIT all the stitches in the Brown Sheep Nature Spun fingering weight first round of the new color, despite the fact that Knit Picks sock yarn you are working in a ribbing pattern. This one round of knitting will not be noticeable and will Knit Picks Palette eliminate the color play in the purls. The only excep- Jamieson and Smith Jumper weight yarn tion to this is if you are in the color your Jamieson and Smith shawl weight purl ribs will be worked in--then it naturally works 3 ply or 4 ply Cherry Tree Hill super sock out all by itself! Corrugated ribbing will curl less if you cast on in the color of the purl ribs, negating the need to knit the first round.

Many space-dyed sock yarns are not appropriate as they will cause the motifs to blur. Solid colored yarns are best.
