Fez boa parte do seu percurso em teatro, a que juntou Epequenas participações em séries e telenove- las. Agora, dá vida a Julieta em “Belmonte”, um projeto que diz ter uma aura especial. É atriz mas também cantora sempre que a desafi am. O ar exótico, esse deve-o aos antepassados do pai, natural de Cabo Verde. De voz serena e olhar penetrante, Carla Galvão é mãe de Tomé, de 4 anos, fruto de uma relação estável mas da qual não gosta de falar. Lux – Como é que surgiu a oportunidade de entrar em “Belmonte”? A Carla não faz muita televisão… Carla Galvão – Não. Este é o primeiro projeto com continuidade. Já tinha feito participações pontuais em séries e novelas. A primeira participação em televisão foi, salvo erro, na novela “Amanhecer”, há 13 anos. “Belmonte” tem uma aura gigantesca, muito brilhante. Fui contactada para a novela, fi z o casting Carla Galvão, de 33 anos, é atriz há 16, mas o seu percurso tem sido feito sobretudo em teatro, embora já tenha tido pequenas participações em telenovelas e séries A atriz, que dá vida a Julieta na telenovela “Belmonte”, não poupa elogios ao ator Filipe Duarte. “É um ator top e de uma grande generosidade com toda a equipa”, afi rma “Durante a gravidez fi z digressões de quatro espetáculos diferentes, em que dançava, cantava, pulava... Vi na tabela que tinha entrado no Conservatório com a melhor nota e, como sou muito sensível a sinais, achei que aquilo queria dizer alguma coisa. E fui para o Conservatório em 1999 e não parei até hoje. Lux – Sem arrependimentos? C.G. – Nunca me arrependi. Neste percurso tenho sido muito bafejada pela sorte. Há uma série de reconhecimentos que me têm acon- tecido, desde as nomeações para os Globos de Ouro em 2004 e 2007 ao Prémio Bernardo Santareno, ao prémio da crítica de teatro, ao prémio de teatro da Time Out de Melhor Ator em 2012... Ser artista em Portugal é muito duro, mas o artista trabalha com uma matéria tão subjetiva e sensível que devia ser mais acarinhado. Sinto que o não arrependimento e a minha força também têm a ver com o facto de eu ter sido acarinhada, além de ter tido a sorte de estar sempre a trabalhar. Para mim isto tem sido muito natural, nunca olhei para trás. Só no início deste ano é que pensei que estava na hora de começar a pensar num plano B, porque as coisas fi caram mesmo terríveis, os subsídios foram cortados, as companhias tiveram de adotar estratégias de contenção... Mas nunca numa perspetiva de desistir ou de me arrepender daquilo que optei por fazer até aqui. Foi mais numa de sobrevivência. Pensei: “Se isto falhar tudo, tenho de encontrar um plano B fora desta área.” Mas não foi preciso. Lux – Quando se tem fi lhos o peso é outro, não é? C.G. – Sim, pensei num plano B também por causa disso. Eu tenho um fi lho e tenho essa responsabilidade. A atriz adora festejar as datas importantes Lux – Já foi conhecer as suas raízes cabo- -verdianas? C.G. – Sim. Fui pela primeira vez a Cabo Verde em 1999. Gostaria de ter ido mais cedo, mas foi assim que a vida se organizou. A ida a Cabo Verde foi muito importante, deu-me uma força… Acho que houve uma identifi ca- ção, qualquer coisa que me complementou como pessoa e me ajudou a decidir este lado mais artístico. Foi uma viagem em família. Conheci toda a minha família paterna, vi onde o meu pai nasceu... Em Cabo Verde a tradição oral é muito forte e a dimensão teatral também. Complementei-me como pessoa com aquele imaginário. Era uma coisa que só conhecia contada pelo meu pai ou pela música da Cesária Évora. As letras das músicas cabo- -verdianas são representativas da humani- dade do cabo-verdiano. Lux – Também canta. Como é que começou? C.G. – Comecei a cantar desafi ada pelos meus amigos. Vivia num bairro, ao lado da marcha popular, do fado... E sempre fui muito atenta, sempre gostei muito de fado e lembro-me da Cidália Moreira, com quem me identifi cava. Houve um dia em que decorei a “Rua do Capelão” e uma amiga minha percebeu isso e desafi ava-me a cantar.

    National Report on the Performance of IndividualSchools in the 2000 Senior Certificate Examinations Foreword At the beginning of last year I released the National Report on the Performance of Individual Schools in the 1999 Senior Certificate Examination. This was the first time that such as report had ever been released to the public in South Africa. My purpose in doing so was to provide the public with an overview of the performance of individual schools in the Senior Certificate examination. I also stated then that the focus in 2000 would be on the underperforming schools and “…to pull these schools out of this abysmal situation”. A 5% increase in the pass rate was targeted for 2000. Today I am particularly proud to release the National Report on the Performance of Individual Schools in the 2000 Senior Certificate Examination. We have not only improved the overall pass rate by 9%, but we have broken the cycle of underperformance in many schools. The number of schools that obtained a pass rate between 0% and 20% has decreased from 940 in 1999 to 499 in 2000. Once again I would like to congratulate those students who have succeeded as well as their teachers and principals who worked very hard to provide support and a good quality education to our learners, sometimes in very difficult circumstances. I also want to extend my gratitude to the parents and provincial and national departmental officials for their support and encouragement to ensure the success of the Senior Certificate examination. The challenge for 2001 will be to consolidate our gains and to improve even further.

    The revelation of African culture in Long walk to freedom Munzhedzi James Mafela Long walk to freedom is the autobiography of Nelson Mandela. The author recounts his life, but at the same time deals with those experiences of his people and events he considers most significant. Writers of autobiographies are concerned primarily with themselves as subject matter. As Abrams writes: `Autobiography is a biography written by the subject about himself'.1 This means that in an autobiography, the subject recounts his or her own history. The novelist Graham Greene says that an autobiography is only `a sort of life'. Any such work is a true picture of what, at one moment in a life, the subject wished ± or is impelled ± to reveal of that life.2 Long walk to freedom recreates the drama of the experiences that helped shape Mandela's destiny.3 Throughout his life, Mandela fought for justice, freedom, goodness and love. The narrative is therefore a story about Mandela as well as the struggle of Africans in South Africa. The autobiography can thus be categorised as a historical or political narrative because it deals with matters affecting not only Mandela, but the nation as a whole. Shelston says that this type of narrative appeals to our curiosity about human personality, and to our interest in factual knowledge, in finding out `what exactly happened!'4 As indicated above, the life of Mandela holds for us not only the political events that took place in the country, but also a record of the cultural life of his countrymen at the time, especially of Africans.

    Codes of Conduct: Mandela’s Politics Talk: SAVUSA, University of Groningen, 29 November, 2006; African Studies Centre, Leiden, 30 November, 2006 Tom Lodge In this talk tonight I want to explore the moral and intellectual bases of Mandela’s conciliatory politics. I am going to argue that they were well established a long time ago, instilled in the lessons learned during Mandela’s upbringing, regulatory principles that drew upon both indigenous African and British imperial notions of personal honour and public virtue. These lessons were supplemented by his experiences as a relatively young man in Johannesburg in the 1950s, in a world that suddenly seemed suffused with hope and expectation Lineage enjoys pride of place in Mandela’s testimonies about his childhood. For his friend Fatima Meer in 1988, Mandela, still then in prison, compiled a family tree and a genealogy. This indicated his line of descent in the Thembu royal chieftaincy as a member of its “left hand house”.1. 1 Fatima Meer, Higher than Hope: The Authorised Biography of Nelson Mandela, New York: Harper and Row, 1990. 1 Much is made of Mandela’s aristocratic status in the various narratives about him. In these Mandela’s genealogy is an important source of his charismatic power. “Since he was a small boy in the Transkei, Mandela was treated as someone special”, Richard Stengel, Mandela’s collaborator on his autobiography, notes. “His political confidence” was substantially derived from “the security and simplicity of his rural upbringing”2. Mandela himself maintains that much of his childhood was a form of apprenticeship shaped by a knowledge of his “destiny” for high office in the Thembu chiefdom.

July 1999 ABSTRACT This study is a brief history of college libraries in the former Transkei, from 1882 (the period of the missionaries) to 1994 (the year when Transkei was reincorporated into the Republic of South Africa). The history of college libraries in the Transkei has never been fully documented, despite the fact that some of the colleges and their libraries have been in existence for some time. Besides, there were some colleges which were without libraries. Even those that existed had not been fully developed, and the reasons for this have not been articulated. The author, therefore, considered it relevant to research the development of college libraries in this region. Fourteen college libraries were examined chronologically, starting from the colleges established during the missionary period (1882-1953), to the colleges established during the period of independence (1977 -1994) . Other periods covered were those of Bantu Education (1953-1962) and self-government (1963-1976). In order to provide a framework for the study, the historical development of each of the college libraries was examined in terms of the following criteria: adequacy of library accommodation; staffing; budget; the size and type of collection; users and types of services offered. The researcher gathered data by consulting and interviewing relevant people. Both primary and secondary sources were consulted. Conclusions drawn in this study clearly show that college libraries in the former Transkei were far from being centres of teaching, learning and research.

    Oral Tradition, 10/1 (1995): 91-110 Mandela Comes Home: The Poets’ Perspective Russell H. Kaschula Introduction The oral poet, or imbongi (pl. iimbongi), still forms an important part of contemporary Xhosa oral traditions. Although society is continually adapting due to changing socioeconomic and political norms in South Africa, the Xhosa imbongi has been absorbed into present-day life. The role of the modern imbongi is therefore inextricably linked to the ever changing social norms and values in Xhosa society.1 Political oratory takes place within the wider social, political, and cultural context (the macro situation) of a particular society; this is also true of the imbongi’s poetry today. For example, with the reawakening of Black Nationalism and political consciousness among the Xhosas, poetry in the form of izibongo is alive and well within trade unions and political organizations. Thus any ethnographic study of iimbongi as political orators and social critics would have to take place within the broader social and cultural context. Such studies would, in turn, possibly reveal changes within society. The micro or immediate context of any performance, and the macro situation, including the broader South African context, within which the imbongi operates, are interlinked. This approach clearly illustrates that oral tradition has, in this case, adapted itself to become a vehicle of protest in contemporary South African society.
