Like many of you, I am a perpetual warm-weather person, absolutely love sunshine, saltwater, long hours of daylight and the seasonal winds that electrify a sailor’s time on the water. We are now into Daylight Savings Time, the last bits of chilly morning air, and a ramp up for our collective outdoor fun.

Moving right along . . . Your Club continues to make strides in the ongoing repairs from storm damage, and your Dockmaster, our “I can-do-anything magician,“ Greg Spitzer, has overseen replacement and repairs of our pilings and docks, pool fencing, irrigation systems, roof and structural work, and the replacement of the torn roof above the junior building. That he does his remarkable job and saves your Club untold expense is one thing, but that he does so with such a professional end result is simply outstanding! The roof shingles are being redone, the building siding is in the works, and the new ballroom carpet absolutely looks fantastic. To compliment that new carpeting, your Board of Directors approved the purchase of new ballroom chairs. Our current ones are 15‑years‑old and, frankly, at neither a fit-nor-finish condition that is on par with the rest of our Club. It is important that members understand that some large expenses are being covered by the funds from insurance proceeds. The others are being paid for out of accounts that have accrued over the past year. Even during the Covid shutdown, the Club paid down a record amount of debt, and still added to our capital improvement account every month from operations and a small amount of our member dues. In fact, some of those accounts are in excess of historic levels, and the expenditure for new ballroom chairs will not put your Club into any financial challenge whatsoever. Your Treasurer Tim Kane, General Manager Jim Warwick, and Past Commodore Jim Reeves continue to do a masterful job in our financial matters. Our future is indeed very bright.

On our sailing front . . . We are ramping up participation in light of the improving conditions surrounding the Covid virus. PYC shall remain conserva- tive in the practice of protecting members and staff and, as we host our local and national level regattas, we will not turn a careless attitude to any event we host. In an attempt to keep your Club’s air safe and healthy for members and staff, we are installing a new air-purification system in the kitchen. Designed by a local expert in air handling and airborne contaminants, this is a small rectangular device that moves air through a filtration system that kills 99.99% of airborne pathogens. PYC is one of the first to be able to utilize this technology, and GM Warwick believes that this is a prudent effort to guard against risk of infection from delivery personnel and from the myriad of activity most of us never see in the kitchen area. Keeping our staff healthier and safer positively affects our members as well. Sailing Director César Travado is seeing a huge upswing in Summer Sailing … from 25 sign-ups last year, (Pre-Covid) to over 80 for this summer, as of March! We will have a robust Summer Sailing Camp, and César continues to develop our younger sailors to be able to race and have fun with their Opti’s and into the larger boats for the older kids. Your Fleet Captain Andrew McMillan will be coordinating events ranging from our Junior Olympic event, which we hold every spring, to one-design and open PHRF events on Pensacola Bay.

Socially . . . Well - we have some “WOW” coming our way!!!! Commodore Emeritus Nikki Ferry is teaming with Nancy Matthews of your Hospitality Committee to roll out fun events for members, guest regatta participants, and a combination of everyone across both sailing and traditional Club events. Also, as we keep mentioning . . . we hope to engage as many of our members as possible in the Labor Day Regatta at Southern YC in New Orleans. Soon we will have some detailed plans for your consideration, but if you have even a chance of joining in, it will prove to be a fantastic PYC experience. Join in as we take our brand on the road for a great time on and off the water!

Please chime in with any questions or thoughts at any time . . . I am usually at the Club on a daily basis, and any of your Board Members will be happy to get as many members involved as may desire. We are headed to a great spring and summer and look forward to more participation as we improve past the worst of the virus concerns.

Aloha, Tom

PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Dr. David Chandler PYC Membership The Pensacola Yacht Club continues to be an aquatic-focused venue to attract those interested in yachting and water activities. Our waiting list for March contained 66 candidates for membership. We are excited to announce that, on St. Patrick’s Day, the Pensacola Yacht Club Board of Directors voted to approve one new corporate member and three new individual members. Please welcome all of these new members to our PYC family and connect with our activities.

PAGE 4 | JIB SHEET It is with great sadness that we report the passing of two of our members.

George Cancro (May 7, 1940 - February 6, 2021) was born in Jersey City, NJ. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and he retired as Navy Senior Chief. George then served as the maintenance engineer for the city of Sarasota, Florida. He also held memberships and was active in the Masons, Shriners, and Geocaching. He enjoyed wood working in his garage and being a “Good Bosun Mate Engineer.” He is preceded in death by his parents Steve and Virgina Cancro, brother Robert Cancro, and his wife of 45 years, Annie Cancro. He is survived by his son, Steve Cancro, daughters Helen Scapatici and Nancy Harris, brother Richard Cancro, six grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren, . . . plus one on the way.

Rudy Bray (November 13, 1929 - March 14, 2021) Rudy was a fantastic character with a long list of accomplishments. He graduated from Andalusia High School in 1948 and subsequently from Auburn University with a degree in engineering, Rudy was among one of their most esteemed graduates. Rudy Bray was always thinking creatively, and he was very passionate and captivating in his expression of ideas. He held thirteen patents, including drone systems to protect animals in Africa against poachers, a phone system to monitor cardiac pacemakers, and an omnidirectional wheelchair control system for disabled dancing. His company, Vertec, manufactured our new Race Committee Vessel signaling system, and he went into PPE production for the Covid19 pandemic. Rudy is survived by his sister, Carolyn May, his children Past Commodore Ronald Bray, Dr. John Bray (Annette), and Rena Bray Patton (Dr. Robert), along with ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Coming Next Month . . . In its May issue, the Jib Sheet will reprint excerpts from a special “PYC Member Spotlight” article featuring Mr. Rudy Bray in the ……. 2015 Jib Sheet.

PYC Membership Survey Efforts The PYC Membership Committee met via Zoom on March 10, 2021. Aimee Dumas oversees PYC media, and she agreed to join our team. We are continuing our efforts to gather information on boat ownership and aquatic activity participation. We will be adding questions to a survey, included in PYC billing statements to assist our construction of the PYC database. Please help us with membership development by completing this survey.

The PYC Satori Foundation Leads the Nation! Our PYC Satori Foundation is nationally recognized by US Sailing with the 2020 Jim Kilroy Outstanding Outreach and Inclusion Award. The Satori Foundation is the first recipient of this esteemed honor. Please read President /Previous Commodore Alan McMillan’s article in this PYC Jib Sheet and view the US Sailing Awards Ceremony on YouTube as follows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1fYlCfUh34

We should all be extremely proud to give recognition to Tom and Carol Patterson. Their original donation their “Satori” initiated the Foundation. Thanks also to Denis McKinnon, Tim Burr, and Alan McMillan for their their leadership, and to Talbot Wilson for his terrific video presentation which was instrumental in securing this recognition.

PYC Ad Hoc Safety Committee The PYC Ad Hoc Safety Committee met via Zoom on March 3, 2021. The Committee includes Commodore Tom Pace, Satori President & P/C, Alan McMillan, Member Murt Guild, Director Steve Cozart, Member Hal Smith, Director Bridgett Helm, General Manager Jim Warwick, Dock Master Greg Spitzer, Sailing Director Travado, and Vice Commodore David Chandler. We elected Steve Cozart and Hal Smith as Chairman and Assistant Chairman, respectively. The Committee will oversee the safety of aquatic events, the PYC Marina, the Clubhouse, and Grounds. Two areas immediately addressed in the meeting were the marina hoist and slipperiness of the ramp due to marine growth. PYC has engaged Albatross Divers, Inc. to engage in episodic use of their novel cavitation technology device to clean the ramp. Commodore Tom Pace is in discussion with Dales Marine Corporation to address hoist area issues.

PAGE 5 | JIB SHEET Covid-19 Quietens With ongoing public health efforts, including increasing vaccination prevalence, we have a respite in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations (Figure). We are seeing the return of familiar faces at the Club and are enjoying a more robust activity level. The answer to the question of “Which vaccination is the best?” . . . is . . . “the one you can get”! The risks of the vaccine are less than the risks of Covid infection. Masking, social distancing, and frequent hand-hygiene recommendations remain prudent precautions.

See you all at the Club!

PAGE 6 | JIB SHEET A message from Satori Foundation President Alan McMillan I’m so honored to be the 3rd president of the PYC Satori Foundation. This 501c (3) Not for Profit Foundation has been making incredible contributions to our community for the past six years, on behalf of our great yacht club. Following in the footsteps of Denis McKinnon and then Tim Burr, both of whom served as president for 3 years, confirms what big shoes I have to fill. Additionally, Hurricane Sally and COVID threw a couple of extra hurdles into the transition, as we were 2 ½ boats down, with no outreach sails in the past year. But with our committed Trustees, Satori Advisory Board, the support of the PYC Board, Club Members and community volunteers, we continue to have important activities in our plans for 2021.

“Integrity,” our 2nd sailboat donated by Tom and Carol Patterson, will soon have its Hurricane Sally damage fully repaired and will be ready to sail again. Additionally, PYC Member Jim Foss, has generously donated his sailboat “Delphina,” an S-2 7.9, to replace the Tartan-28 “Second Wind,” which was lost in Hurricane Sally. Not only will “Delphina” soon be available in our rental program, but Captain Bob Kriegel and his sailing instruction partner, Captain Linda Thompson will once again soon be offering Introduction to Sailing classes. “Delphina” will be very busy. (Many thanks to you Jim, for your generosity!)

We have already heard from two outreach partners that, with COVID-19 more under control, will be able to sail this summer. We’ve also reached out to Front-Line COVID nurses to thank them for their service in the best way we know how – to take them sailing! We hope to have a decent, if not full, outreach season. Additionally, we plan to continue awarding summer sailing scholarships.

And the news continues to get even better! I had the privilege of accepting, on behalf of the Satori Foundation, the Jim Kilroy Outstanding Outreach and Inclusion Award from US Sailing. For Satori to receive this high national recognition, with only 6 years as a foundation, is an incredible achievement. This is the highest recognition for community contributions made by USSA, the National Governing Body for the sport of sailing in America. This award represents the level of loyalty, generosity and commitment that the Satori Foundation enjoys from the PYC members, including generosity of their time in volunteering in multiple ways to ensure that our mission continues. We would not have been so honored without your help.

By now, you’ve all received the Satori Survey and hopefully have completed it. This will assist us in our April 16th Meeting as we plan out the next few years. We appreciate your input and look forward to hearing your feedback. In the meantime, please save the following important dates for upcoming events.

Upcoming events: Wednesday June 2 Satori annual “Meet & Greet!” Friday July 23 Pete Moore Fishing Rodeo Captains’ Dinner Saturday July 24 Pete Moore Fishing Rodeo & Kids Pinfish Tournament Thursday Sept. 23 “Satori Soiree,” Live Auction and Silent Auction PAGE 7 | JIB SHEET Rear Commodore’s Comments James Simkins Spring is here! Improvements stretch from roof-to-floor and waterfront to chimney! PYC, quite literally, has you covered.

For anyone who has been to the Club recently, the most prominent activity is the repair to the Club’s chimneys. Not only are the visible portions now safe and more attractive, but the flues are now safer as well -GM Warwick reports that, soon we will be able to throw another “gas log” on the fire in the Commodores’ Room and Front Lounge. However, let’s hope there will be no need for this until late this year. With great anticipation, work will start on roofing for the Club and Watson Sailing Center by the last week of March. Negotiations are underway to replace/repair siding before summer.

Wearing a new “Easter bonnet!” Ballroom 1 – Transformed! While visiting, please take a look at Ballroom #1, which now sports our brand-new carpet. Ballroom #2 will be complete by the end of March. Ballroom improvements go even further with the PYC Board’s approval to replace the well-worn ballroom chairs. These enhancements will transform the appearance of our facility and, not only benefit our membership, but assure that PYC remains a premium venue for revenue-generating events. Moving outside to the pool, you will see that new fencing is now installed, which replaces old fencing damaged during Sally. PYC’s Maintenance Team, led by Dockmaster Spitzer, completed removal and replacement of damaged concrete pool decking. This is the first step in replacing the pool awning which will be delivered and installed in April.

Jr. Chair Andy Bellina, Sailing Dir. César Travado, Dockmaster Greg Spitzer & Crew James Fields Members Grant Lopez, & Brian Hoffman Restoring the pool deck – Look at the camera & smile, Greg! Getting the Junior Club “Ship Shape”! Last month, I reported that the PYC Maintenance Team completed replacement of the Junior Clubhouse roof. That allowed the Team to complete interior repairs, including a new ceiling, repainting of walls, and installation of air conditioning this month. Special thanks to Sailing Director César Travado, Junior Chairman Andy Bellina, and junior parents for cleaning and organizing the interior. With a great PYC team effort, the Junior building will be back to normal operations by April, at a fraction of the cost of using external contractors. The long list of Sally repairs has gotten much shorter thanks to the efforts of so many. From current and former Flag Officers, Club Management, Staff and many dedicated Members, my sincere appreciation for making things happen. PAGE 8 | JIB SHEET PAGE 9 | JIB SHEET Interview with a Sailor César Travado “Andrew McMillan, the Sailor” Andrew McMillan is a prolific sailboat racer and is the current Fleet Captain of PYC.

6 -- months - old Flirtatious? Proud & confident, but surely not surly

1) Your first time on a sailing boat? My father, Neil McMillan, was the local Hunter Yachts dealer, and I grew up on boats, so I don’t remember my first time. My parents took me sailing at 6-weeks-old, but my earliest memories of sailing are riding on the back of the J 41 “Vigilante.” 2) Your first time in a regatta? The first regatta I competed in was probablyWadewitz with Emily Burr in the mid 90s. 3) What boat do you currently sail in, and in what boats have you sailed? I currently sail Fish Class, , a Corsair 31R, and a Mumm 30. I have sailed on many different boats but have spent sig- nificant time on a Beneteau 45, an Evelyn 32, a Tripp 26, a Beneteau 40.7 and many dinghies and beach cats. 4) What is the most bizarre thing that happened in a regatta? Sailing a 420 regatta on Lake Pontchartrain in a very disorganized breeze. Some boats were beating to the first mark and other boats on the same leg were able to put up their spinnakers, it made for a very interesting mark rounding. 5) What is the thing that most angers you in a race/regatta? When the wind gods seem to single you out for holes and bad shifts. 6) Which is the race/regatta that you remember with the most pleasure? Both times I have done the Chicago Mackinac Race were delightful, and it is my favorite race. 7) And the race/regatta you would like to forget? A Gulfport-to-Pensacola Race around 2000 that was straight upwind in nasty thunderstorms all night. 8) Your “dream in the peak”? (Your sailing dream?) I’d love to go cruising without a schedule. I’ve only done deliveries where I had to get back to work or catch a plane by a specific date. Being able to go anywhere, or stay in a place a couple days to wait for a weather window, would be amazing. As for racing, I want to do the R2AK (Race to Alaska), and I think I’d like to do it on a small boat and camp at night instead of sailing straight through and trying to win. 9) Sailing goals for 2021, and beyond? B-e-a-t Commodore Pace at Fish Worlds! And, I’m set on trying a foiling boat as soon as I can. 10) The most important people for you in sailing and in PYC? Neil McMillan for starting all of this and sailing together with him on the Fish. And - David Johnson for talking me into some very “memorable” races. 11) Your perfect sailing venue and your perfect sailing conditions? Pensacola Bay when it’s nuking out of the north! 12) Besides sailing which other sport do you practice? There are other sports? 13) Are you superstitious? No, bananas are okay on the boat. 14) Your perfect holiday? Cruising in the Exumas or hanging out at the family camp in Maine.

PAGE 10 | JIB SHEET Fleet Captain’s Report Andrew McMillan Maxine 1 proved to be a very interesting regatta with dense fog in the area. After waiting for a window in the fog, NYC Race Committee was able to get one race in. Our sailors had great success on PYC boats, with “,” “Phoenix,” and “Acadia,” winning every class. With Maxine 2 and Maxine 3 coming up soon, hopefully our sailors will continue to sail well and sail fast in any conditions.

Congrats to our Capdevielle team at NOYC’s Mardi Gras Regatta. We should be proud and thankful for the work they have done to prepare the boats, as well as the practice days they’ve put in. Hard work paid off, and Michael Levert, Brandon Addison, Eddie Adams, Rob Adams, Nikki Kessler Ferry, and Evan Noon placed 3rd Overall. We also did well in the Open Division, placing 2nd Overall. The results of this group’s hard work have only just begun to manifest. I am looking forward to a very successful Capdevielle season!

Gil Hackel continues to impress. He won 1st place out of 76 competitors at the 2021 Gulf Coast Championship in Fairhope (left photo). Not only did he win, he did it with all bullets (1st places)! He also won the 2021 Sunshine State Championship for Florida (rt. photo). Melissa and Josh Hackel have an amazing sailor on their hands.

GIL!

The Crew Board is now available in the Clubhouse, so anyone looking for a ride or looking for crew should sign up. If anyone has suggestions, feel free to let me know. Post by Talbot Wilson . . . There are currently 7 entries in the new 2021 North Gulf Challenge . . . St. Petersburg to Pensacola, scheduled to start Friday, April 23 near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. This is a 330NM ocean race northwest from Lower Tampa Bay and across the Big Bend of Florida to Pensacola Bay. PAGE 11 | JIB SHEET Cruiser’s Corner Jim & Linda Oyler

2021 Raft Up #2 ! THE gang’s all here! Robert’s Bayou/Point Yacht Club St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Just three weeks after our 1st raft up at Ft. McRee, we found ourselves in Robert’s Bayou enjoying the hospitality of Point Yacht Club. Cliff and Kristen Roberts did a great job of coordinating this event, including ordering wonderful weather. Neil Davies loaned his grill and Cliff was a master at grilling the brauts for over sixty hungry people. Of course, there were side dishes and desserts galore. Everything was yummy. Green was the color for the evening, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day a little early. Most of the boats were there for the weekend but others came just for the day. Several people made the drive over from Pensacola and some from as far away as Gulf Breeze. Did you know Gulf Breeze is now sixty-five miles away from Pirate’s Cove? It was a great weekend full of good fun, good food, and good friends.

Our destinations included Stockton and Big Daddy’s in Fairhope. Pleasant temps - 75˚F, sunny sky, no rain, and 10+ K wind. We couldn’t have asked for anything better. Brad Andrews with Sara Orimore, Gary Folse, Steve Harp, Darrel Harrison, Bob Kriegel, Mike McCloud, Alan McMillan, Larry Morris, and Dave Norfleet showed up for the 125-mile ride and lunch. Nine bikes and ten people – wish we could get that good a turn out for our boat races! Lunch included hamburgers, shrimp, oysters, crab claws and Chinese beer – “YingaLing”; the beer was cold and the food good. We returned via 98 to PYC, for even more of that cold Chinese beer – Life is very good – even with Covid. It was a 10+ ride – perfect weather, a mix of pleasant country roads, crowded urban highways, and great company. We did our Spring SOB Planning Meeting on March 10th – and the get together was entertaining and productive. We unanimously and enthusiastically asked (conscripted!) Mike McCord to take the helm as our new “Grand Poobah.” He graciously accepted – and he will do an excellent job! In the process, we enjoyed camaraderie, beer and chicken wings. Life doesn’t get much better. Barry Berroset, Todd Brandt, Steve Harp, Darrel Harrison, Bob Kriegel, Mike McCord, Susan McKinnon, Alan McKinnon, and Larry Morris met to discuss our plans for the first half of 2021. We agreed that we would continue monthly weekend, and weekday rides, with a mix of earlier starts, and on occasion longer two- and three-day rides. Earlier starts provide the flexibility of lunch at PYC, with an afternoon ride as well. Alternate start locations – possibly north of town – will make it easier to meet and head to points north. And, it was suggested that our email address list include cell phone numbers – making it easier to organize a quick impromptu ride!
