Like many of you, I am a perpetual warm-weather person, absolutely love sunshine, saltwater, long hours of daylight and the seasonal winds that electrify a sailor’s time on the water. We are now into Daylight Savings Time, the last bits of chilly morning air, and a ramp up for our collective outdoor fun. Moving right along . Your Club continues to make strides in the ongoing repairs from storm damage, and your Dockmaster, our “I can-do-anything magician,“ Greg Spitzer, has overseen replacement and repairs of our pilings and docks, pool fencing, irrigation systems, roof and structural work, and the replacement of the torn roof above the junior building. That he does his remarkable job and saves your Club untold expense is one thing, but that he does so with such a professional end result is simply outstanding! The roof shingles are being redone, the building siding is in the works, and the new ballroom carpet absolutely looks fantastic. To compliment that new carpeting, your Board of Directors approved the purchase of new ballroom chairs. Our current ones are 15-years-old and, frankly, at neither a fit-nor-finish condition that is on par with the rest of our Club. It is important that members understand that some large expenses are being covered by the funds from insurance proceeds. The others are being paid for out of accounts that have accrued over the past year. Even during the Covid shutdown, the Club paid down a record amount of debt, and still added to our capital improvement account every month from operations and a small amount of our member dues. In fact, some of those accounts are in excess of historic levels, and the expenditure for new ballroom chairs will not put your Club into any financial challenge whatsoever. Your Treasurer Tim Kane, General Manager Jim Warwick, and Past Commodore Jim Reeves continue to do a masterful job in our financial matters. Our future is indeed very bright. On our sailing front . We are ramping up participation in light of the improving conditions surrounding the Covid virus. PYC shall remain conserva- tive in the practice of protecting members and staff and, as we host our local and national level regattas, we will not turn a careless attitude to any event we host. In an attempt to keep your Club’s air safe and healthy for members and staff, we are installing a new air-purification system in the kitchen. Designed by a local expert in air handling and airborne contaminants, this is a small rectangular device that moves air through a filtration system that kills 99.99% of airborne pathogens. PYC is one of the first to be able to utilize this technology, and GM Warwick believes that this is a prudent effort to guard against risk of infection from delivery personnel and from the myriad of activity most of us never see in the kitchen area. Keeping our staff healthier and safer positively affects our members as well. Sailing Director César Travado is seeing a huge upswing in Summer Sailing … from 25 sign-ups last year, (Pre-Covid) to over 80 for this summer, as of March! We will have a robust Summer Sailing Camp, and César continues to develop our younger sailors to be able to race and have fun with their Opti’s and into the larger boats for the older kids. Your Fleet Captain Andrew McMillan will be coordinating events ranging from our Junior Olympic event, which we hold every spring, to one-design and open PHRF events on Pensacola Bay. Socially . Well - we have some “WOW” coming our way!!!! Commodore Emeritus Nikki Ferry is teaming with Nancy Matthews of your Hospitality Committee to roll out fun events for members, guest regatta participants, and a combination of everyone across both sailing and traditional Club events. Also, as we keep mentioning . we hope to engage as many of our members as possible in the Labor Day Regatta at Southern YC in New Orleans. Soon we will have some detailed plans for your consideration, but if you have even a chance of joining in, it will prove to be a fantastic PYC experience. Join in as we take our brand on the road for a great time on and off the water! Please chime in with any questions or thoughts at any time . I am usually at the Club on a daily basis, and any of your Board Members will be happy to get as many members involved as may desire. We are headed to a great spring and summer and look forward to more participation as we improve past the worst of the virus concerns. Aloha, Tom PAGE 3 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Dr. David Chandler PYC Membership The Pensacola Yacht Club continues to be an aquatic-focused venue to attract those interested in yachting and water activities. Our waiting list for March contained 66 candidates for membership. We are excited to announce that, on
