NSWIS SELECTION GUIDELINES - Winter Sports NSWIS Aim The NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) will work in partnership with sport to deliver programs that will develop and assist identified high performance NSW athletes and coaches to achieve excellence and success at international level. NSWIS will be a major player in the delivery of internationally recognised programs, coaching and services to achieve world-class performance as a part of an effective, nationally coordinated, high performance sport network. NSWIS will apply local flexibility to support talent. Program Purpose Winter sports in Australia continue to achieve results that appear out of proportion to the size and status of the sport in Australia. The Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) together with Ski & Snowboard Australia (SSA) as the largest Australian winter sport National Sporting Organisation (NSO), have been innovative and remain progressive in developing systems and partnerships to foster high performance success. Winter sports in Australia targets athletes and program areas in which Australia can be successful at the highest levels of international competition. Results by Australian athletes over the past eighteen years have continually surprised the international winter sports community. This success has been achieved by a careful investment strategy of effort, expertise and resources, where program focus and target areas are clearly identified, investigated, understood, committed to and invested in. The strategic model underpinning past success, has been one of complete cooperation between all of the stakeholders in high performance winter sports in Australia. This unique model has featured the OWI sharing program operations with NSWIS and SSA to provide underpinning program, home base and pathway support. These programs are operated by NSWIS in partnership with SSA and OWIA, and include Freestyle Moguls, Park and Pipe (Ski and Snowboard) Snowboard Cross and Ski Cross. In addition, a small number of individual scholarships will be offered in the disciplines of Alpine and Cross Country Skiing. NSWIS Programs will support the daily training needs and aim to provide world-class coaching, training and competition, facilities and support services to improve athlete development. Selection Aim The aim of selection is to ensure the best and most suitable athletes available are included in NSWIS programs, according to program description, selection processes and criteria as agreed. 1 Program Description Target Athlete Group The NSWIS program generally caters for senior elite and elite development athletes who are likely to represent Australia at the World Cup, World Championship & Olympic level. NB: All athletes must be Australian citizens and current financial paying members to the state/national sporting organisations to be nominated for NSWIS scholarship. Please note: The NSWIS Winter Sports Program has an overall maximum of 43 scholarships. Each discipline may nominate up to their respective squad maximum, however nomination/eligibility does not guarantee selection. If the nominated squad numbers exceed the overall Program scholarship maximum the JMC will have the final decision on the athlete numbers within each discipline. 2 Selection Criteria Athletes will be eligible for inclusion into the NSWIS Winter Sports Squad based on their performance relative to selection criteria for one of the scholarship categories listed below. NB: ‘Eligibility’ does not necessarily guarantee an NSWIS scholarship offer. This will be dependent on the number of scholarships available and athletes will be ranked by performance accordingly and will need to gain the necessary recommendation from the discipline Head Coach/Coordinator and/or NSWIS Winter Sports Coordinator and subsequent approval by the JMC. Winter Sports Disciplines covered by NSWIS Selection The selection of athletes for the NSWIS Winter Sports Program covers events for males and females included in the Winter Olympic Games and World Championships from the disciplines of Freestyle Moguls, Park and Pipe (Ski and Snowboard), Snowboard Cross and Ski Cross.
