WWF Scotland commissioned these materials in the belief that the ability to think in a more connective or integrative way is essential to living in a highly interdependent world. You do not have to know anything about systems thinking beforehand to benefit from these materials. The Linkingthinking Series was written as an introduction to systems thinking, to help educators and students develop their own latent abilities to think relationally. You don’t have to ‘work through’ all of the units. They have been designed so that they can be used flexibly – either as a professional development course, as a teaching course, or as a resource that can be dipped into and adapted to help enhance teaching across a wide range of disciplines. The Linkingthinking materials have been trialled and tested. You can be confident that they will help you and your students discover some new perspectives, promote discussion and develop new skills to think effectively about complex issues. The citizens and professionals of tomorrow will require such qualities as flexibility, resourcefulness, creativity, self-reliance and empathy, and the ability to participate actively and responsibly. The Linkingthinking materials are designed to help develop the thinking skills that underpin these qualities.. 1848 INTRO_8pp 20/1/05 4:30 pm Page iii (Black plate) Introduction Table of contents Linkingthinking Series Foreword Introducing the Linkingthinking Series The Linkingthinking Perspectives Series Unit 1 Linkingthinking, education and learning: an introduction by Stephen Sterling Unit 2 Developing Linkingthinking perspectives and skills in problem solving by Stephen Sterling Unit 3 Exploring sustainable development through Linkingthinking perspectives by Stephen Sterling Unit 4 Linking(thinking) everyday life to natural systems and resource use by Paul Maiteny The Linkingthinking Focus Series Unit 5 Linkingthinking and Core Skills by Deryck Irving Unit 6 Bringing environmental issues into the mainstream curriculum by John Salter Unit 7 Using Linkingthinking in a real system by Deryck Irving The Linkingthinking Toolbox Glossary Terms that are underlined throughout the Linkingthinking materials, are defined in the Glossary Introducing the Linkingthinking series iii 1848 INTRO_8pp 20/1/05 4:30 pm Page iv (Black plate) Introduction Introducing the Linkingthinking Series What is this about? Linkingthinking is: • a new and ground-breaking flexible suite of learning and teaching resources • for teachers, lecturers and other educators, and their students • about thinking and acting in more relational ways: the why, what and how • about generating new perspectives, introducing systems ideas and developing relational thinking skills which are broadly applicable to different situations and contexts • a set of ideas, tools, and activities that will help you and your students learn Linkingthinking skills easily • a challenging, thought-provoking resource, designed to help you and your students generate new perspectives appropriate to a highly interdependent world. The Linkingthinking materials comprise: • two series of units: The Perspectives Series (four titles), The Focus Series (three titles) • a freestanding Toolbox of activities • a Glossary. But what is ‘Linkingthinking’? It’s the term used here to describe thinking about the nature and consequences of relationships. Similar terms are ‘systems thinking’ and ‘holistic thinking’. We are used to analytical thinking and reductionist thinking which understands things by taking them apart. But in a highly complex and turbulent world, there’s an increasingly shared view that analytical thinking is not enough. Indeed, by itself, it’s probably compounding our problems. Linkingthinking is the necessary complement to analytical and critical thinking: approaches to problem solving and ways of thinking that are more holistic, systemic, ecological, inclusive and integrative. Why this resource? Although there is a strong argument for developing Linkingthinking ideas and skills in education, it is hardly yet recognised in current curricula and policy objectives. Because of this, there are few, if any, educational resources which help develop these essential skills. Is this for me? If you, your institution or organisation: • are interested in thinking skills but think the debate so far is ‘missing something’ • feel perplexed or overwhelmed by complexity in our lives • are interested in developing understanding about how things interrelate • are concerned by too much fragmentation and segregation in educational structures, knowledge, or policy making • are interested in the sort of thinking skills, values and concepts that might be needed in the transition towards a more sustainable society, then you will welcome Linkingthinking. iv Introducing the Linkingthinking series 1848 INTRO_8pp 20/1/05 4:30 pm Page v (Black plate) Introduction What is the rationale behind Linkingthinking? The writers, partners and WWF Scotland have developed this package in the belief that Linkingthinking: • is vital to help people cope with, understand and address the complex issues that increasingly dominate life • is virtually ignored in consideration of thinking skills and in the debate on critical thinking • is a perspective and skill that can be learnt and taught • is largely unknown to and inaccessible to most people and needs to be translated into usable educational concepts and tools • is increasingly needed in an interdependent world that urgently needs to move towards more sustainable lifestyles for the sake of all our futures. How to use the Linkingthinking Series It is multi-functional: • A self-development course: the units are designed for you, the tutor, to teach yourself. • A resource for teaching systems thinking: any part of the units can also be used to help teach and work with student groups. • Versatile: it is useful within a wide range of subjects – geography, science, business studies, design and technology, personal and social education, etc. It is flexible: • The material can be used flexibly: dip into it, or use it as a whole modular course, in any order that meets the needs of users. • The four units in The Perspectives Series (Units 1-4) are freestanding, and can be used separately, or together with other units in The Focus Series (Units 5-7). • The three units in The Focus Series (Units 5-7) are also freestanding and can be used separately or together with other units in The Perspectives Series (Units 1-4). Note that The Focus Series was written with Scottish curricula in mind. • Each unit consists of two parts: Part A, ‘Key Ideas’ and Part B, ‘Further Investigation’. • There is also a stand-alone Toolbox that can be used with, or independently of, the units. It is adaptable: • While written for educators, many of the ideas and activities can be easily adapted for student use. WWF Scotland commissioned a team of writers to develop the ideas of Linkingthinking and generate this resource. The units represent their personal treatment of the subject and do not necessarily reflect the views of WWF Scotland. • First Edition
First Edition Background: In an effort to enhance the student reflection experience in our campus wellness clinics, staff initiated a monthly blogging activity during this school year. Students were tasked with creating one blog per month on pre-determined professional workplace skills topic. Students were trained on how to create an effective blog, as well as, how to respond to a blog entry. Students wrote blogs after the second clinic of each month. Staff selected a winning entry from each program clinic and students then responded to the winning entries after the fourth clinic of each month. An awards certificate and award were handed out each month to the winning entries. Why Student Blogging: • Allows students to express and hone their creativity • Promotes academic integration in Career and Technical Education courses • Regular writing sharpens the brain ’s performance • Promotes expression of self • Boosts student confidence • Improves communication skills Student Outcomes: • Students gained “know-how ” that can enrich and benefit their clinic experience • Students were able to speak their mind • Students expressed “finding themselves ” and “finally understanding ” when reading or writing blog entries • Winning entries received constructive feedback from student peers • Blogging allowed students to develop unique content and express their clinic experience perspective to others Please enjoy reading our student blog entries on their CAVIT wellness clini c experiences! We Smile Together Here at CAVIT ☺☺☺ The word together symbolizes a group effort, here at CAVIT we work together to get things done efficiently. During our CAVIT dental clinic's we get things done together, we are not only a team that improves each other’s weaknesses; we are a family, "The Dental Family.” The Dental family helps each other out during clinics with simple things like getting a tray ready for a patient.

ISSN 1848-0071 UDC 171+179.3=111 Recieved: 2013-02-25 Accepted: 2013-03-25 Original scientific paper HOLISM IN DEEP ECOLOGY AND GAIA-THEORY: A CONTRIBUTION TO ECO-GEOLOGICAL SCIENCE, A PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE OR A NEW AGE STREAM? MARINA KATINIĆ Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia e-mail: [email protected] In the second half of 20th century three approaches to phenomenon of life and environmental crisis relying to a holistic method arose: ecosophy that gave impetus to the deep ecology movement, Gaia-hypothesis that evolved into an acceptable scientific theory and gaianism as one of the New Age spiritual streams. All of this approaches have had different methodologies, but came to analogous conclusions on relation man-ecosystem. The goal of the paper is to introduce the three approaches' theoretical and practical outcomes, compare them and evaluate their potency to stranghten responsibility of man towards Earth ecosystem which is a self-regulating whole which humanity is part of. Key words: holism, ecosophy, deep ecology movement, gaia-theory, new age, responsibility. Holizam u dubinskoj ekologiji i teoriji Geje: doprinos ekogeološkoj znanosti, filozofija života ili struja New agea?

Many researchers in the humanities and social sciences debate the potential power and nature of the effects of these new forms of communication. Some scholars see dangers in the changing forms of "media literacy," but others see the Internet engendering new levels of democratic debate at grassroots and personal levels. However, much of this research still lacks the basic methodological rigor necessary to make reasonable claims about actual individual human communicative behavior on the Internet.

  • Researching Folk Rhetoric: the Case of Apocalyptic Techno-Gaianism on the World-Wide Web Robert Glenn Howard
Researching Folk Rhetoric: The Case of Apocalyptic Techno-Gaianism on the World-Wide Web Robert Glenn Howard Ethics of Folk Rhetorical Ethnography One of the most important things Franz Boas did near the end of the nineteenth century was advocate for better-trained, more thoughtful, and more rigorous fieldwork methods than those employed by the majority of his contemporaries (see Georges and Jones 1995:31-55). E.B. Tylor, James Frazer, and others' failure to go out and talk with the subjects of their anthropological work contributed enormously to their ability to maintain and perpetuate the largely unexamined and coldly racist worldview of their day. Though Boas himself held dubious views on the nature of race by today's standards, he did argue articulately against anthropology's reliance on the kinds of amateurish fieldwork supported by the colonialist presuppositions of his developing discipline: The descriptions of the state of mind of primitive people, such as are given by most travelers, are too superficial to be used for psychological investigation. The observers who have really entered into the inner life of a people. are few in number, and may be counted on one's finger ends. Nevertheless, the bulk of the argument is always based on the statement of hasty and superficial observers. (Boas 1974:236) The prejudices that infused the work of Boas's generation rarely go unnoticed in ethnographic scholarship today, and Boas's belief that one might "enter into the inner life" of another person now seems rather naive. However, we must recognize that we have inherited many of the same problems that attended the use of even the most reflective ethnographic methods of Boas's era.

PAYDAY SCREENPLAY BY CHARLES HARDING 216 ACKLEN ST. 985-991-2103 FADE IN EXT. ESTABLISHING SHOT. The sun slowly rises up above the horizon. Traffic moves to a steady pace on the highways. School buses transport noisy kids down residential streets. Houses that look expensive and very well kept are drizzled lightly from the sprinkler systems. Storekeepers lift up iron gates to open their business. We are witnessing the awakening of a small town. Everything and everybody seems tranquil and normal. Except not today. INT. KITCHEN MORNING A small kitchen that is in the center of this apartment shared by a young couple and their daughter. The sink has a few dishes left in it from last night’s dinner. The refrigerator is covered with crudely drawn pictures of flowers, animals and hearts with crooked arrows going through them and the words “I love you daddy” written in crayon. CHRIS JONES 22 enters the kitchen wearing a T shirt and boxers. He’s a good looking chap with a few tattoos and a nice build. He has a street smart swagger about himself. He opens the cupboard and pulls down a box of Fruity Pebbles cereal as well as milk, bowl and spoon. ANGEL ROBINSON 21 Chris’s girlfriend enters the kitchen. She is a young woman with lots of natural beauty that’s both simple and inviting. Their three year old daughter ASHLEY follows behind carrying a Sponge bob doll. ANGEL (Dryly) Morning. CHRIS (Equally drying) Morning. Something is not right with these two. ASHLEY (Excitedly) 2. Morning daddy!!! Ashley jumps up into his lap and gives him a tight hug.

The Collver Letters, Indexed Version 11/6/2008a When Gordon Ross told me about publishing the Collver Letters, I was very excited to get a copy. My brother, Dan, had given me a disk with images of the original letters but it was much easier to read the typed versions. Unfortunately, few copies were printed and an electronic version was unavailable. So, I manually retyped the letters from Gordon and Barbara's transcriptions. I added a time line and an index to the names mentioned in the letters. These additions are found at the end of this copy. At a later date, I hope to expand the index with additional information, names and references. I would like to thank the Powell family for the preservation and sharing of these letters, which contain so much of my family's history. I would also like to thank Gordon Ross and Barbara Sytsma for their work in transcribing the letters for others to read and enjoy. I would also like to thank my cousin, Dennis Collver, for all the good work he has put into the Collver web site.
