Joe Gibbs, Hall of Fame NFL Coach, Built The Redskins Into An Elite Team - In... Page 1 of 3 Print Close MANAGEMENT NFL Champion Coach Joe Gibbs Outclassed His Rivals By MIKE RICHMAN, FOR INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 09/12/2012 02:02 PM ET Joe Gibbs let his coaching on game day do the talking. He refused to mouth off during the week for fear it would create distractions for his team and motivate opponents. Case in point: When bombastic Philadelphia Eagles coach Buddy Ryan said a few days before a playoff game in January 1991 that Washington running back Earnest Byner would fumble three times, reporters pressed Gibbs for a response. The Redskins' coach refused to take Ryan's bait. Gibbs' silence spoke volumes about his disregard for triviality. "Joe was every bit as competitive as Buddy if not more, but he just never let it show because he understood that the whole circus act during the week didn't matter," Ray Didinger, a sportswriter at the time for the Philadelphia Daily News, told IBD. "All that mattered was what you did once the ball was kicked off. That was the way he prepared his team and that was the way they played against the Eagles." The Redskins beat the Eagles that day 20-6, one of Gibbs' most gratifying victories in his 16-year National Football League coaching career. Helping the coach have the last laugh were Byner's 77 yards receiving, 49 rushing — and no fumbles. Including that wild-card game, Gibbs boasted a playoff winning Gibbs took over the Redskins in 1981, won the NFL title the next year percentage of .708.

  • Kellen Winslow
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 17, No. 1 (1995) KELLEN WINSLOW By Don Smith Thanks to a last-second trade with the Cleveland Browns, the San Diego Chargers were able to select Kellen Winslow in the first round of the 1979 NFL draft. It turned out to be a masterful move because Winslow, a 6-5, 250-pound consensus all-America tight end from Missouri, became an instant super-star and a powerful contributor to the NFL's most prolific offense in the early 1980s. Injuries limited his playing time on certain occasions and eventually caused him to retire in 1987 after just nine seasons. But when Winslow did play, he performed so spectacularly that opposition defenders lay awake nights wondering if there was any legal way to stop him. Altogether, he caught 541 passes for 6,741 yards and 45 touchdowns. At the time of his retirement, he ranked fifth in receptions among active players and 12th among the all-time leading receivers. He is only the fourth tight end to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Mike Ditka became the first Hall of Fame tight end in 1988 and he was followed by John Mackey in 1992 and Jackie Smith in 1994. Winslow's first few years in the NFL were, by his own admission, "like a fantasy." He began his rookie season on a high note with a team-leading 25 receptions in seven games before a broken leg suffered in the seventh game ended his season. But he bounced back a year later as good as ever with a career- high and NFL-leading 89 receptions, best ever for a tight end up to that time.

Well, here you go. The national crisis is over. The annual post-Super Bowl football withdrawal, a seemingly incurable malady that impacts millions every year the second weekend in February and lasts weeks and months, is now in the past thanks to The Alliance of American Football, the creation of Charlie Ebersol, a television and film producer, and Bill Polian, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They have the football game plan, the business model with multiple big-money investors and a national television contract with CBS to succeed where other spring leagues have failed. The idea is not to compete with the National Football League. That’s a failed concept. The Alliance will complement the NFL and satisfy the insatiable appetite of football fans who otherwise would be suffering from a long period of depression.

  • Offensive Philosophy in Front Office Football
Offensive Philosophy in Front Office Football When you first play Front Office Football, the game handles your depth charts and game plans. If you want to do this yourself, you need to change the settings through the Controls – Options menu, using the Edit Single-Player Options screen. In multi-player leagues, commissioners control these settings for the entire league using the Edit Multi-Player Options screen. Once the AI is turned off, the changes you make using the Game Day – Planning menu are used during simulated games. If you’re accustomed to the way Front Office Football used to handle offense, many fundamental concepts have changed. As Front Office Football evolves, as it has for nearly 20 years now, so has professional football. Player Positions and Skills In Front Office Football, offensive players are closely tied to their positions. When a player gains experience, he gains experience specific to his position. You can change a player’s primary position, but it might change his ratings significantly. You’ll get an idea of how much the ratings will change when you make the position change. Offensive players can play out of position and gain experience for that new position, but they generally are more effective when their position matches their assigned position. This is very different from the defensive system, where defensive players can switch positions and play out of position without penalty. Some positions are closely related. Offensive linemen can play anywhere on the line. Running backs and fullbacks share many attributes, as do flankers and split ends (X and Z receivers).
