  • Collecting Lombardi's Dominating Packers
Collecting Lombardi’s Dominating Packers BY DAVID LEE ince Lombardi called Lambeau Field his “pride and joy.” Specifically, the ground itself—the grass and the dirt. V He loved that field because it was his. He controlled everything that happened there. It was the home where Lombardi built one of the greatest sports dynasties of all-time. Fittingly, Lambeau Field was the setting for the 1967 NFL Champion- ship, famously dubbed “The Ice Bowl” before the game even started. Tem- peratures plummeting to 12 degrees below zero blasted Lombardi’s field. Despite his best efforts using an elaborate underground heating system to keep it from freezing, the field provided the perfect rock-hard setting to cap Green Bay’s decade of dominance—a franchise that bullied the NFL for nine seasons. The messy game came down to a goal line play of inches with 16 seconds left, the Packers trailing the Cowboys 17-14. Running backs were slipping on the ice, and time was running out. So, quarterback Bart Starr called his last timeout, and ran to the sideline to tell Lombardi he wanted to run it in himself. It was a risky all-in gamble on third down. “Well then run it, and let’s get the hell out of here,” Starr said Lom- bardi told him. The famous lunge into the endzone gave the Packers their third-straight NFL title (their fifth in the decade) and a second-straight trip to the Super Bowl to face the AFL’s best. It was the end of Lombardi’s historic run as Green Bay’s coach.

  • Passer Ratings
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 8, No. 9 (1986) BUCKING THE SYSTEM OR, WHY THE NFL CAN'T FIND HAPPINESS WITH ITS PASSER RATINGS By Bob Carroll If you believe in your heart of hearts that Warren Moon is a better passer than Otto Graham, you're at one with the National Football League. Never mind that Graham is a card-carrying member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and a quarterback who led the Cleveland Browns to seven league championships in ten seasons, while Moon is the oft-booed signal-caller for one of the NFL's least successful franchises. According to the National Football League's Passer Rating System, Moon tossed for a 68.5 mark last season; Graham, in 1950 – a year his Cleveland Browns won the NFL Championship, could manage only a paltry 64.7. That makes it official; Warren is 3.8 better than "Automatic Otto." Has George Orwell become an NFL flack? Is this reality or newspeak? More! In the gospel according to the NFL, Dan Marino is the best passer ever. Until this year, Joe Montana was. A couple of other top ten performers: Danny White, the guy who made Dallas forget Roger Staubach, and Neil Lomax, whose success in St. Louis has made him a legend. And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime. Well, it all depends, you say. Actually, it DOESN'T rain (or snow) inside the Hoosier Dome during any part of the calendar year, and Marino, Montana, White, and Lomax ARE good – maybe great – passers. But, are they THAT good? The much-maligned NFL Way of Rating Passers places some present throwers at the top of the Hurler Heap and consigns such clutzes as Sid Luckman, Johnny Unitas, Y.A.

  • Shakespeare in Cleats… the Story of Bill Fisher
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 27, No. 2 (2005) SHAKESPEARE IN CLEATS: THE STORY OF BILL FISHER From Minor League Vagabond to Shakespeare aficionado By Ace Hendricks Many minor league players spend their time as vagabonds, moving from team to team, league to league hoping to get that chance at the stardom and paycheck that had eluded them while playing at a lower level. You've heard stories of players like Johnny Unitas and Kurt Warner, who toil in the minor league before striking it rich. But what about those you don't hear about? The players who spend their whole careers without ever making the big time, are just in the wrong situation, missed an opportunity due to signing with this team and not that team? Spend their young adult lives just one play short of making an NFL squad? And what about those that also enjoy Romeo and Juliet? Love reading poetry? Enjoy a good Shakespeare play instead of watching the "big game" on Sunday? Bill Fisher was one such player. He played from 1969 to 1979 in the minors, playing in top minor league systems, such as the Continental Football League and the Atlantic Coast Football League. Later in his career, he played in leagues such as the Midwest Football League, High Desert Football League and the California Football League, where he finished his career. He also attended three different "major league" camps, all with different teams and different results. As a rookie in 1969, he was with the Denver Broncos, 1971 with the Houston Oilers and with British Columbia of the Canadian Football League in 1972.
