  • Dear President, Dear Ursula, We Welcome the Letter of 1 March That
March 8, 2021 Dear President, dear Ursula, We welcome the letter of 1 March that you received from Chancellor Merkel and PM Frederiksen, PM Kallas and PM Marin. We share many of the ideas outlined in the letter. Indeed, there are some points that we find are of particular importance as we work to progress the digital agenda for the EU. We certainly agree that our agenda must be founded on a good mix of self-determination and openness. Our approach to digital sovereignty must be geared towards growing digital leadership by preparing for smart and selective action to ensure capacity where called for, while preserving open markets and strengthening global cooperation and the external trade dimension. Digital innovation benefits from partnerships among sectors, promoting public and private cooperation. Translating excellence in research and innovation into commercial successes is crucial to creating global leadership. The Single Market remains key to our prosperity and to the productivity and competitiveness of European companies, and our regulatory framework needs to be made fit for the digital age. We need a Digital Single Market for innovation, to eliminate barriers to cross-border online services, and to ensure free data flows. Attention must be paid to the external dimension where we should continue to work closely with our allies around the world and where in our interest, develop new partnerships. We need to make sure that the EU can be a leader of a responsible digital transformation. Trust and innovation are two sides of the same coin. Europe’s competitiveness should be built on efficient, trustworthy, transparent, safe and responsible use of data in accordance with our shared values.

  • Managed Expectations: EU Member States' Views on the Conference On
Working Paper SWP Working Papers are online publications within the purview of the respective Research Division. Unlike SWP Research Papers and SWP Comments they are not reviewed by the Institute. This Working Paper is part of a series of ‘European Perspectives’ – joint analysis and recommendations from SWP authors together with our European partners on current challenges for the European Union. RESEARCH DIVISION EU / EUROPE | WP NR. 03, JUNE 2021 Managed Expectations: EU Member States’ Views on the Conference on the Future of Europe Minna Ålander, Nicolai von Ondarza, Sophia Russack (eds) Abstract The EU institutions (European Commission, European Parliament and Council) have di- verging opinions on the aims and outcomes of the Conference on the Future of Europe. The Council has been the EU institution with the most reservations about the format and aim of the exercise. This scepticism, however, is the lowest common denominator of a more diverse set of priorities and expectations. This report reveals what individual member states want to achieve with the Conference and their expectations of the potential results. It brings together short contributions from a representative cross-section of EPIN members and distils the essential aspects. It inves- tigates the respective governments’ positions on institutional reform ideas, EU Treaty change, prioritised policy fields, plans for national citizen participation and media cover- age, as well as the general current political environment regarding further EU integration. The European Policy Institutes Network comprises 41 think tanks and policy institutes working on EU affairs from 28 Eu- ropean countries, including almost all EU member states as well as candidate countries.

  • Elia and Amprion Launch Alegro, the First Interconnector Between Belgium and Germany
PRESS RELEASE | Brussels, 9 November 2020 Elia and Amprion launch ALEGrO, the first interconnector between Belgium and Germany — Commercial operation is scheduled to start on 18 November 2020 (day-ahead market) — ALEGrO will enhance both countries' security of supply and contribute to the integration of renewables On Monday 9 November, system operators Elia and Amprion inaugurated the first electricity interconnector between Belgium and Germany. The livestreamed event took place in the City Hall of Aachen and was attended, either in person or digitally, by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Armin Laschet and Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten. The ALEGrO interconnector will make it possible for the two countries to exchange 1,000 MW (1 GW) of additional electricity. Commercial operation is scheduled to start on 18 November (day-ahead) and 8 December (intraday). ALEGrO interconnector ALEGrO connects the grids operated by electricity transmission operators Elia (Belgium) and Amprion (Germany) and is a key link in the construction of an integrated European electricity system. The connection will have a transmission capacity of 1,000 MW, equivalent to the amount consumed by a city of one million inhabitants. The interconnector delivers multiple benefits: it enhances security of supply for both countries, it facilitates the energy transition by allowing better integration of renewable energies, it contributes to price convergence and it makes the connected regions more economically attractive. 90 km of lines and two converter stations 90 km of HVDC power lines connect the Lixhe (Belgium) and Oberzier (Germany) converter stations.

  • DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT REPORT 2021 European Center for Digital Competitiveness – Digital Engagement Report 2021
DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT REPORT 2021 European Center for Digital Competitiveness – Digital Engagement Report 2021 » Preface The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted that digitalisation is one of the most critical issues faced by individuals, businesses and countries today. Whilst other nations – notably the United States and China – have capitalised on the crisis and now dominate key digital technologies more than ever before, Europe is increasingly lagging behind in terms of digitalisation and the development of a digital economy. Moreover, many European companies are still struggling not only with infrastructure topics, but also with key digital technologies such as quantum computing and robotics. Against this backdrop, the European Center for Digital Competitiveness by ESCP Business School in Berlin has published the Digital Engagement Report 2021. The report presents the digital engagement of all 27 European heads of state and government for the year 2020, including all interactions around digitalisation, based on publicly accessible government information, press releases and personal accounts on the social media platform Twitter. Heads of state and government play a crucial role in the successful digital transformation of their countries, and similar to CEOs, who are responsible for setting and implementing company strategy, these government leaders set the political agenda of their country and are ultimately responsible for their execution. Furthermore, the involvement of a government leader can signal the importance of an issue to his or her entire country, which in turn can inspire the actions of citizens, start-ups and incumbent businesses. The way that governments manage and navigate the digital revolution will continue to determine significantly how competitive and prosperous their countries will be in the decades ahead.
