Paulo Sousa welcomes familiar opposition to St. Jakob-Park in the shape of FC Porto as his FC Basel 1983 team chase a first qualification in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds. • The Portuguese coach knows Basel have to improve on their record against clubs from his home country, having scored in only three of ten fixtures against Liga sides. Match background Basel • Basel's last encounter with Portuguese opposition brought them their biggest win to date – a 3-0 defeat of Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League group stage, Fabian Schär opening the scoring. • They were the first goals Basel had scored against Sporting in the sixth match between the teams, Schär's strike coming after 473 blank minutes. • Previously Basel had beaten just one Liga side, a 2-1 home victory over Vitória SC in the third qualifying round of the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League. Basel's record at home is W2 D0 L3; overall it is W2 D3 L5. • The Rot-Blauen finished second in Group B, 11 points behind Real Madrid CF who were 1-0 winners in on matchday five, Basel's last home game. The other fixtures at St. Jakob-Park ended in victories against Liverpool FC (1-0) and PFC Ludogorets Razgrad (4-0). • The Madrid reverse was only Basel's second in their 11 European home matches since the start of last season, seven of which were won. • The Swiss title holders are in the last 16 of the modern UEFA Champions League for just the third time and will want to forget their most recent experience, in 2011/12, when they crashed 7-0 at FC Bayern München, having edged the home leg 1-0. They have reached the European Cup quarter-finals only once, in 1973/74, when they overcame Celtic FC 3-2 at home but lost 4-2 away. Porto • Porto have been beaten just once in six fixtures with Swiss teams, going down 3-0 at Grasshopper Club Zürich in their 1980/81 UEFA Cup second round second leg for a 3-2 aggregate defeat. They have won three of the other five games. • Julen Lopetegui's men came top of Group H, five points clear of FC Shakhtar Donetsk. On their travels they drew 2- 2 at Shakhtar on matchday two and then won at Athletic Club (2-0) and FC BATE Borisov (3-0). • Porto were unbeaten in the group with four victories and two draws and have lost only one of their last 14 European fixtures home and away, a 4-1 thrashing by Sevilla FC in the second leg of last season's UEFA Europa League quarter-final. They went out 4-2 on aggregate. • In their 19th UEFA Champions League campaign, Porto are contesting their seventh round of 16 tie since lifting the trophy in 2004. They have lost five of those six ties, making it through to the quarter-finals just once, in 2008/09, when they were eliminated 3-2 on aggregate by Manchester United FC after accounting for Club Atlético de Madrid on away goals. Coach and player links • During his playing days, Sousa faced Porto 12 times while at SL Benfica (seven matches), Sporting (four) and Panathinaikos FC (one), registering two wins, four draws and six defeats. The only UEFA Champions League game was a 0-0 draw in the 2001/02 second group stage with Panathinaikos. • and were team-mates at FC Internazionale Milano between 2008 and 2010. • Samuel met Porto twice with Inter in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage, prevailing 2-1 at home after losing 2-0 in Portugal. • Quaresma was a colleague of Matías Delgado at Beşiktaş JK in 2010/11. • Jackson Martínez netted twice in Colombia's 4-1 win over Yoichiro Kakitani's Japan in the 2014 FIFA World Cup group stage in Cuiaba. Juan Quintero also featured for the South Americans. • Derlis González had a brief spell with Benfica's youth team in 2012/13. 8 FC Basel 1893 - FC Porto Wednesday 18 February 2015 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit St. Jakob-Park, Basel Head coach Paulo Sousa Date of birth: 30 August 1970 Nationality: Portuguese Playing career: SL Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, FC Internazionale Milano, Parma FC (loan), Panathinaikos FC, RCD Espanyol Coaching career: Portugal Under-16s, Queens Park Rangers FC, Swansea City AFC, Leicester City FC, Videoton FC, Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC, FC Basel 1893 • During a 13-year career as a gifted midfielder, Sousa played in his native Portugal – where he started with Benfica – Italy, Germany, Greece and Spain, representing some of the continent's most high-profile clubs. • A 1989 FIFA U-20 World Cup winner in a squad coached by , Sousa earned 51 senior caps for Portugal without scoring. He lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 1996 with Juventus following spells at Benfica and Sporting, and got his hands on Europe's top club prize again a year later having joined Dortmund. • Spent his early years in club management in the English second tier, taking charge of QPR and Swansea in successive seasons before a short stint at Leicester. • A move to Hungarian outfit Videoton in May 2011 led to Sousa's first coaching experience in European competition, the highlight being progress from the second qualifying round into the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League group stage. Left in January 2013 and five months later was appointed coach of Maccabi Tel-Aviv, whom he guided to the Israeli title in his sole campaign. • Succeeded Murat Yakin as coach of Basel on a three-year contract in May 2014 less than four weeks after landing the Israeli championship. Julen Lopetegui Date of birth: 28 August 1966 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: San Sebastián CF, Castilla CF, UD Las Palmas, Real Madrid CF, CD Logroñés, FC Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, Spain Coaching career: Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, Real Madrid Castilla, Spain Under-19s, Spain Under-20s, Spain Under- 21s, FC Porto • Lopetegui's promising goalkeeping performances for Real Sociedad de Fútbol's youth sides led to a move to Real Madrid. The Basque native progressed into the senior squad, but, starved of opportunities, switched to Logroñes, where he made 107 Spanish top-flight appearances over three seasons. • Those displays earned a move to Barcelona but again he found playing time limited, prompting a transfer to Rayo Vallecano, where he featured 112 times until retirement in 2002. He earned one senior international cap and was part of Spain's 1994 FIFA World Cup squad. • Started his coaching career in 2003/04, at second division Rayo, but the experience was short-lived – he was dismissed after ten games. After five years away from the bench he returned to active duty in 2008/09, with Real Madrid Castilla, ending the campaign in sixth place. • In 2010 Lopetegui joined the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and led the U19s to the European title two years later before reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2013. He had assumed control of the U21s in August 2012 and guided the holders to the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. • In Israel, he steered the U21s to their second consecutive continental title. Lopetegui left the RFEF at the end of his contract with the team in command of their qualifying group for the 2015 finals. On 6 May 2014, he returned to club duties with Porto.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • In 2012/13, Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • SS Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in AS Roma's 1-1 draw at PFC CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat matched by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Ten more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Zlatan Ibrahimović for Paris Saint-Germain on matchday three in 2013/14. • set a new record for a UEFA Champions League stage with nine goals in 2013/14, whiich Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15. Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) managed eight. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 16 occasions, two more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • FC Bayern München hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with ten, from 2 April 2013 to 27 November 2013. That surpassed the previous mark of nine, set by Barcelona between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Six teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12 and 2014/15). • Sixteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most recently Olympique de Marseille in 2013/14. • Real Madrid scored 20 goals in the 2013/14 group stage, equalling the competition record held jointly by Manchester United (1998/99) and Barcelona (2011/12). Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid in 2012/13. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • FC BATE Borisov conceded 24 goals in the 2014/15, a new record. The previous mark, 22, was held by GNK Dinamo Zagreb (2011/12) and FC Nordsjælland (2012/13). The next highest total is 19, shared by Galatasaray AŞ (2014/15), MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06), Manchester United (2010/11) and AS Monaco FC (2014/15) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, a mark FC Steaua Bucureşti surpassed on matchday six in 2013/14. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is six points: FC Zenit in 2013/14. Since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, eight teams have made it through with seven points: Legia Warszawa (1995/96),
