What would you call it? CITR 101. 9FM Patti Schmidt: [laughs] There would have to be some scary performance artists on it. I've been very big on Miranda July for the last couple of years. I interviewed her and I was surprised at how shy she seemed, but by all reports she's just a complete performer, and I think that she would be interesting to put in front of an Queer FM Sundays, 6-8pm audience. Bonfire Madigan, the woman who plays the distorted cello; The Need, they're also good. Annie Anxiety is an old favourite of mine, she would be great. The Ether Table alt. DiSCORDER: How did the Dishrags come about? teaching. It's really quite amazing that these women artists actually Jade We formed in Central Saanich, at Mount Newton High School, in managed to make some sort of reputation for themselves. There are a lot grade nine, sometime around 1975-76 We were friends from elementary of parallels with music. When women artists were considered really school and we all quit high school to be in the Dishrags. It was a pact good they would always be talked about as having a virile brush stroke, We started out playing covers and our first gig was a New Year's Eve or something, of being like a man. Our best compliments were always, party at my parents place [laughs] We played 'Heartbreak Hotel' and 'Wow you sound like guys.' [laughs] I didn't really realize what gender 'Winchester Cathedral' [laughs]. was until the Dishrags. We were treated so differently from guy bands, Was this the first Dee Dee and the Dishrags show? which sometimes worked in our favour. For example, because we were No, we were called Kix. seen as a novelty we would be hired to do things like open for the Clash. With an x?' On the other hand, it meant that it was really hard to be taken seriously, Yes [laughs] and you would get comments like, 'You play like a guy,' or 'You can't play When did you change your name? at all.' We took a long time to come up with a name We ended up playing at In a way, being in the Dishrags was a political gesture? the first ever punk show in Vancouver [on] July 30, 1 977. We came over Yeah. That was one of the things that was so much fun, that attracted us to visit my cousin, Chris Arneft, who was in the Furies, and we watched to punk, particularly as girls. We dressed in black leather and had safety them practice for the show. They were managed by this woman, Kat pins, and did really gross things like spit on the street. You would do that Hammond, who came in and said, 'Hey you three are in a band, you're and really be noticed. People would talk and look. It was fun. You really on the bill now too ' We were all 15 at that point. They needed to make felt as if you were doing something that was disruptive. the show's poster, so she gave us our name She said, 'Your name is Dee Do you think it would mean the same thing now? We could do things that were at her place in Vancouver and have girl talk [laughs]. genuinely shocking to people. But it's hard to say I don't find anything Did you already think of yourselves as punk at that time? Oh yeah. So rebellion has changed, it was easier to be a rebel when Who were your predecessors? you were in the Dishrags? The Ramones. I think what inspired us more than anything was buying Oh, yeah. their first album. That was in August of 1976, as I recall. We started to do Now what does it take to be a rebel? I really like Patti Smith and I think she's really cool, but her I do, because she does it all with attitude. You get the sense that she's music had no influence on us at all. Her image did. I also love Blondie, doing it because she wants to do it. She's got spirit. She's strong. She but at the time they seemed way too pop, although we did cover 'Rip Her doesn't take crap from anybody, even if she does stupid or embarrassing to Shreds' from their first album.
