Third Year in Arts SYLLABUS Third year in Arts SYLLABUS ARCHAEOLOGY AAYC 31013: Paleography and Epigraphy with special reference to Tamil Objectives: The objective of this course is to give a profound knowledge and practice in reading and interpreting the past historical facts from inscriptions which is one of the reliable sources that reveal the past history. Course Content: Tracing the development of Tamil alphabet upto present times, Learning Granta alphabet, Select inscriptions for practical, Epigraphical format and inscriptional Tamil, Understanding the relationship between Tamil and other Dravidian languages through inscriptions Teaching and Learning Methods: Lecture, Practical Works, and Field Works In Course Assessment: Practical Exam (20%), Final Essay (10%), Mid Semester Exam (10%) Learning Outcome: This course will help the students understand the origin and development of the Tamil scripts over the past centuries and to enable them to read and interpret the inscriptions. Aims and Objectives: This course deals with the origin and growth of the architectural and art traditions of a particular region and to compares and contrasts the traditions of other regions and traces the changes in the traditions over the centuries, in South Asia. Course Content: Development of Nagara, Vesara and Dravida styles, early experiments in art and architecture by the Pallavas, Chalukyas and the Kalingas, The culmination of the above schools under the Cholas, Pandiyas, Hoysalas, Kesaris and in Khajiraho and Vijayanagara art and architecture. Teaching and Learning Methods: Lecture with Audio Visual aids and Field Works In Course Assessment: Practical Exam (10%), Final Essay (10%), Seminar (10%), Mid Semester Exam (10%) Learning Outcomes: This course will make the students know the origin and development of the architectural and art traditions and the relevant dynasties and periods in the past history of different regions. Course Content: Critical Study of Sri Lankan Brahmi Inscriptions, Sinhala Paleography, Select Sinhala Inscriptions, Tamil Inscriptions of Sri Lanka Teaching and Learning Methods: Lecture with Audio Visual aids and Field Works. In Course Assessment: Practical Exam (20%), Final Essay (10%), Mid Semester Exam (10%) Learning Outcomes: At the end, students will be able to read and interpret the inscription and to correlate the contemporary history of other reliable evidences. Course Content: It throws light on the complex dynamics of communal living and variations in ethnic groupings across Sri Lanka. This is juxtaposed with other cultures and cultural practices of Sri Lankan ethnic groups’, aesthetics standards, norms and beliefs of the indigenous people and the unity that underlies cultural diversity and practices. AAYC 31063: Archaeological Tourism in Sri Lanka with Special Reference to Northern Sri Lanka Objectives: This course provides profound knowledge of the archaeological sites, heritage monuments and about their historical significations and enables them to impress and enlighten the local and foreign tourist who visits Sri Lanka, especially to northern Sri Lanka. Course Content: An introduction to archaeology, history of archaeology in Sri Lanka, the importance of art and sculpture, ancient inscriptions, industrial and maritime archaeological heritage of Sri Lanka for tourism.     Karunakaran / Lost in Translation “Lost in Translation”: A Study of the History of Sri Lankan Literature Shamila Karunakaran Abstract This paper provides an overview of the history of Sri Lankan literature from the ancient texts of the precolonial era to the English translations of postcolonial literature in the modern era. Sri Lanka’s book history is a cultural record of texts that contains “cultural heritage and incorporates everything that has survived” (Chodorow, 2006); however, Tamil language works are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to Sri Lankan culture and are “lost in translation” when conveyed in English. Keywords book history, translation iJournal - Journal Vol. 4 No. 1, Fall 2018 22 Karunakaran / Lost in Translation INTRODUCTION The phrase “lost in translation” refers to when the translation of a word or phrase does not convey its true or complete meaning due to various factors. This is a common problem when translating non-Western texts for North American and British readership, especially those written in non-Roman scripts. Literature and texts are tangible symbols, containing signifed cultural meaning, and they represent varying aspects of an existing international ethnic, social, or linguistic culture or group. Chodorow (2006) likens it to a cultural record of sorts, which he defnes as an object that “contains cultural heritage and incorporates everything that has survived” (pg. 373). In particular, those written in South Asian indigenous languages such as Tamil, Sanskrit, Urdu, Sinhalese are written with specifc words, ideas, and concepts that are unique to specifc culture[s] and cannot be properly conveyed in English translations.

    JNU, the Headquarters of the Breaking India Enterprise By Saumya Dey There is a bundle of bile and toxicity, namely, a book, available in the market. It is somewhat pompously titled as What the Nation Really Needs to Know – The JNU Nationalism Lectures. This book contains, between two covers, nearly all the opinions and propaganda used by the breaking India protagonists on the JNU campus. Understanding the Breaking India Enterprise We owe the phrase ‘breaking India’ to that wonderfully insightful book co-authored by Rajiv Malhotra and Aravindan Neelakandan (Breaking India: Western Interventions in Dravidian and Dalit Faultlines). I am rounding it off by adding the word ‘enterprise’ to it, for it is an activity, pursued by a nexus of church groups, private think tanks, academics and NGOs, that employs and provides a livelihood to a lot of people within and outside India (as we see in the book). What is this enterprise’s objective? Well, as Messrs. Malhotra and Neelakandan have demonstrated, it primarily seeks to promote and exploit faultlines in Indian society in order to breed various kinds of separatist identities (Dravidian or Dalit), presumably to further the disintegration of India. There is, however, another aspect to the breaking India enterprise. Many of its votaries seek to alienate Indians from the Indian state through persistent conversations about its oppressiveness. They also harp on the artificiality of the Indian nation that serves as its basis. Their intention perhaps is to ensure that the average Indian ceases to be emotionally invested in the Indian nation-state so that it can be easily undone.

Healthcare providers should have no qualms about using medical records or offering a service such as email for communication with patients for fear of violating HIPAA. Their concerns should lie only within the concerns for ethical online marketing, albeit with a greater sensitivity for how patients might react to usage of what is considered by many to be very private information. In this paper we address the use of electronic marketing strategies (email marketing, online scheduling, etc.) in the healthcare field within the confines of the HIPPA law and industry- recommended ethical guidelines. Offering these customer-oriented services can be a strategic use of the Internet for marketing to current patients, attracting new patients, and reducing costs. Web and email marketing are ripe marketing options for medical practices because consumers are increasingly using the Internet as a means of searching for information about their health concerns (HarrisInteractive, 2007).     E t h i c s | 1 Session 9 4.3. Marketing Ethics Marketing ethics is the area of applied ethics which deals with the moral principles behind the operation and regulation of marketing. Some areas of marketing ethics (ethics of advertising and promotion) overlap with media ethics. Fundamental issues in the ethics of marketing Value-oriented framework, analyzing ethical problems on the basis of the values which they infringe (e.g. honesty, autonomy, privacy, transparency). An example of such an approach is the AMA Statement of Ethics. Stakeholder-oriented framework, analyzing ethical problems on the basis of which they affect (e.g. consumers, competitors, society as a whole). Process-oriented framework, analyzing ethical problems in terms of the categories used by marketing specialists (e.g. research, price, promotion, placement). None of these frameworks allows, by itself, a convenient and complete categorization of the great variety of issues in marketing ethics. Power-based analysis Contrary to popular impressions, not all marketing is adversarial, and not all marketing is stacked in favor of the marketer. In marketing, the relationship between producer/consumer and buyer/seller can be adversarial or cooperative. For an example of cooperative marketing, see relationship marketing. If the marketing situation is adversarial, another dimension of difference emerges, describing the power balance between producer/consumer and buyer/seller. Power may be concentrated with the producer (caveat emptor), but factors such as over-supply or legislation can shift E t h i c s | 2 the power towards the consumer (caveat vendor). Identifying where the power in the relationship lies and whether the power balance is relevant at all are important to understanding the background to an ethical dilemma in marketing ethics.

While direct-to-consumer prescription drug adver- tising is subject to unique oversight by the Federal Drug Administration, advertisements for health care services are regulated by the Federal Trade Commission and treated no differently from advertisements for consumer goods. In this article, we argue that decisions about pursuing health care services are distinguished by informational asymmetries, high stakes, and patient vulner- abilities, grounding fiduciary responsibilities on the part of health care providers and health care institutions. Using examples, we illustrate how common advertising techniques may mislead patients and compromise fiduciary relationships, thereby posing ethical risks to patients, providers, health care institutions, and society. We conclude by proposing that these risks justify new standards for advertising when considered as part of the moral obligation of health care institutions and suggest that mechanisms currently in place to regulate advertising for prescription pharmaceuticals should be applied to advertising for health care services more broadly. Each chapter presents a new, richer understanding of the preoccupation of the ancients with specific economic problems including distribution, civic pride, management and uncertainty and how they were trying to resolve them. The research is based around the different artifacts and texts of the ancient East Indian, Hebraic, Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and emerging European cultures which remain for our consideration today: religious works, instruction manuals, literary and historical writings, epigrapha and legal documents. In looking at such items it becomes clear what a different exercise it is to look forward, from the earliest texts and artifacts of any culture, to measure the achievements of thinking in the areas of economics, than it is to take the more frequent route and look backward, beginning with the modern conception of economic systems and theory creation.
