Text: Heilbroner, Robert L., The Worldly Philosophers: The Lives, Times, and Ideas of the Great Thinkers, 7th Edition Newly Revised, Touchstone – Simon Shuster Pub. Co., 1999. Course Objective: The overall objective of this course is to introduce the origins and evolution of economic theory from its formative stages to the present. The focus will be on developing the interrelationships between the historical environment and development of economic theory to be used in understanding existing social realities. Upon completion of this course, student should be able to: recognize the various schools of economic thought, along with their origins and evolution; summarize the main characteristics of the various schools of economic thought; describe the technological, ideological and social forces that have influenced these schools of thought; identify the various economic theories that were/are used to explain and analyze particular choices at various points in time; distinguish the impacts that the various schools of thought have had on current “mainstream” economics, and; ask yourselves the important questions (i.e., What do I know?, How do I know?, What do I believe?, and Why do I believe it?) and arrive at defendable answers. -

Mijuskovic Full Member International Association of Greek Philosophy University of Athens, Greece ORCID iD: http://orcid.org/0000-0001-5950-7146 URL: http://worldphilosophynetwork.weebly.com E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract: In contrast to a little bit utopian standpoint offered by Plato in his teachings about the state or politeia where rulers aren`t “in love with power but in virtue”, Aristotle's teaching on the same subject seems very realistic and pragmatic. In his most important writing in this field called "Politics", Aristotle classified authority in the form of two main parts: the correct authority and moose authority. In this sense, correct forms of government are 1.basileus, 2.aristocracy and 3.politeia. These forms of government are based on the common good. Bad or moose forms of government are those that are based on the property of an individual or small governmental structures and they are: 1.tiranny, 2.oligarchy and 3.democracy. Also, Aristotle's political thinking is not separate from the ethical principles so he states that the government should be reflected in the true virtue that is "law" or the "golden mean". IDEAL" AND "REAL" IN CLASSICAL JEWISH POLITICAL THEORY Gerald J.Blidstein This essay considers the degree to which Jewish political and legal ? ? theory allows and, indeed, mandates the recognition that the Torah legislates an ideal law which is not appropriate for situations of social and political stress, and the degree to which such situations are really the historical norm rather than the exception. The Talmud, it is shown, adum brates this concept, but in a fairly marginal form.Maimonides places it at center stage of societal governance, apparently expecting that a Jewish so ciety will of necessity be thrown back upon this option; but he also sug gests guidelines for its regulation. R. Nissim of Barcelona (fourteenth century) both expands the concept and also relaxes the Maimonidean re strictions on its use. This final form of the doctrine receives a thorough critique at the hands of Isaac Abrabanel; but it also serves as the linchpin for much contemporary argument for the legitimacy of Israeli legislation from a classical Jewish perspective. The relationship of law and political theory to reality, that is, to the actual doings of people in society and to the concrete problems faced by societies, is undoubtedly complex. Are law and political theory to are shape reality? Or is the reverse true, and both law and theory to take their cue from society? This, of course, is a very abstract formula tion of the issue. It is also an overly extreme and polarized formulation, for it is likely that the relationship of law and political theory to re ality is dynamic and indeed dialectical. -

In the collection of essays Cameralism in Practice, editors Marten Seppel and Keith Tribe seem bent on deconstructing every single element of this definition. -

The relation between religion, economy and the country became a major topic in the development of public welfare systems. Humans are political creatures that have the potential to realise the level of moral conscience to meet the needs of a better life, but humans as spiritual beings must have a balance between religious morality and economic morality. With economic ethics are supported by religious morality, the welfare system can be realised systemically if the state, communities and individuals can realise the six- dimensional form: religious observance, good governance, justice, national security, the prosperity of society and the nation's vision. Introduction or the analysis of the public welfare, al-Mawardi al-Baghdadi (d. 450/1058) start a discussion philosophically about political ethics and Muslim character F with an emphasis on the role of individuals and communities to create integrity and social balance. In fact, the goal was set to realise the happiness of living in the world and in the hereafter (al-Arzanjani, 1328: 221-223). By applying philosophical postulates for a solid religious grounds, al-Mawardi describes human beings as political creatures (Arkoun, 2000: 250). If a man is a political creature, because he is basically weak (QS. Al-Nisa ', 4: 28), then he can not live without the help of others, in contrast to animals capable of living independently (al-Mawardi, 1996: 92- 93; al-Arzanjani, 1328: 218-219). -

Alvey School of Economics and Finance Massey University Palmerston North New Zealand ABSTRACT This paper on Aristotle (384-322 BC) is part of a long-term research programme on the ancient Greeks. It is a companion to other work, which deals with the ancient Greek context, and the thought/work of Socrates (469-399 BC), Plato (427-347 BC), and Xenophon (434- 355 BC). The framework for the investigations is shaped by the Capabilities approach developed by Amartya Sen. This is the second of three papers concerning Aristotle. The first paper considered Aristotle’s ethics. The projected paper will focus on his economics. The current paper focuses on Aristotle’s politics. Aristotle distinguishes between a narrow and a broad definition of politics (politikē). The peak of politics in the polis, the legislative art, fundamentally affects private behaviour (and choice and character) by individuals through enactment of law. The 4 Economic Systems What is an Economic System? Economics is the study of how people make decisions given the resources that are provided to them Economics is all about CHOICES, both individual and group choices. We must make choices to provide for our needs and wants. The choices each society or nation selects leads to the creation of their type of economy. 3 Basic Questions Each economic system tries to answer the three basic questions: What should be produced? How it should be produced? For whom should it be produced? How they answer these questions determines the kind of system they have. Four Types of Systems There are four main types of economic systems. The Traditional Economic System The Command Economic System The Market Economic System The Mixed Economic System Each system has its strengths and weaknesses. Traditional Economy In a traditional economy, the customs and habits of the past are used to decide what and how goods will be produced, distributed, and consumed. Each member of society knows from early on what their role in the larger group will be. Jobs are passed down from generation to generation so there is little change in jobs over the generations. In a traditional economy, people are depended upon to fulfill their jobs. If someone fails to do their part, the system can break down. Farming, hunting, and herding are part of a traditional economy. Traditional economies can be found in different indigenous groups. In addition, traditional economies bartering is used for trade. Bartering is trading without money. For example, if an individual has a good and he trades it with another individual for a different good. -
