This is our first match of the season against The Seasiders, and we make the 160-mile round trip to play the return fixture at Broadclose Park in four weeks’ time on 29th April.

In the last two weeks, the First team have drawn one and lost two league matches. In the home 1-1 against Liskeard (report on page 22) we could have lost that match near the end so I reckon one point was better than none!

The team put in a good performance at recently-crowned champions Sticker before going down 4-1 to a skilful, powerful side whose progress when promoted next season to the Premier Division will be interesting to follow (report on p. 13).

Then on Tuesday evening we lost 4-2 at Wadebridge in a game we might have won with our strong second half show, had we not gifted them virtually all their goals (report on page 7). A special mention to new signing Matt McIlroy who will be a real menace to defences, and to 16-year old Ben Chapman who had a lively last 15 minutes in midfield as substitute, and to another 16-year old Will Trenoweth coming on at centre back for the last seven or eight minutes.

Meanwhile the Reserves lost 2-0 at home to Troon last Saturday (report on page 11) and will now need to grind out some points over the next few weeks to get clear of the bottom-two in the league. Next match is at Pendeen next Saturday (8th - note the 2pm kick off time). Good luck to Harry and his team! THIS SEASON’S WEST DIVISION CLUBS Mousehole Women overcame the handicap of taking only 10 players to St Teath in Grounds, postcodes & distances (from Trungle Parc) their last match, but still won 3-0 (see page 25). 04 33 The Boss’s Blog: Player-Manager Steve Parker-Billinge

The last couple of games have both been a little disappointing in the first half, but the second half performances have been pleasing.

We always knew going to Sticker was going to be a tough ask, as it has been for everybody this season. We went with a makeshift back line again, which saw us change our shape hoping to make it easier to absorb the pressure I was expecting.

Needless to say, playing non-defenders in the back four was a bit of a risk, but a necessity. Luke Johnson found himself as skipper in the first of Billy Curtis’ three-game absence. Luke was noticeably comfortable in the new role and didn’t look out of place at all.

We conceded two early on in the first half and at that point started to fear the worst. However we weathered the storm and nearly pulled a goal back through a Lee Robinson effort just before half time.

The second half saw a quick goal after some sloppy defending, but a change of shape after five minutes saw the introduction of new signing Matt McIlroy. Going back to the formation we have played since I have been in charge seemed to work and for much of the second half we looked menacing. Jonno had a tinkering run from the back and nearly scored, Robbo put one in top bin from 25 yards and we looked much stronger. Unfortunately it wasn’t us who scored the fifth goal of the game, but if it had been, it would have made for an interesting last ten minutes.

I shall take this brief opportunity to congratulate Sticker on a great season and wish them all the best in the SWPL Premier League next season.

Defeat 4-2 at Wadebridge saw us concede 8 goals within 2 games. Unfortunately all four in this game could have been prevented. Slack defending and not doing simple basic things cost us all four goals. Again, this was a makeshift defence, but there are no excuses. To go in 3-2 down at half time was frustrating, with three goals at this stage all of our own doing. But on the positive, we scored two good goals and always looked threatening in the final third. Matt’s first start resulted in his first goal, but he also held the ball up well in difficult conditions and brought others into play throughout. For much of the second half we looked like scoring and weren’t out of the game until 10 minutes before the end, which again from a sloppy goal to concede. That seemed to take the wind out of us and we limped to 90 minutes. It was a hard fought game on the whole, but one we need to learn from and quickly. At this level, you can’t take things for granted.

This week we welcome Bude, who make the long trip from north Cornwall and I’m sure some from Devon. Bude have been near the bottom for the most of the season, but are now picking points up since the return of last season’s leading scorer (Billy Hopcroft) from Bodmin. It will be a battle, and having learnt some valuable lessons in the past couple of games, we’ll need to tighten up at the back.

This week sees the inclusion of Lewis Caspall and Jake Andrew back available. Lewis will partner Matt up top today in their first pairing, and I am excited at the prospect! 32 Cheers, SPB 05 VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT GROUNDSMEN REQUIRED TODAY’S OTHER MATCHES IN THE WEST DIVISION From 12th April until the end of the season Liskeard Athletic v Illogan RBL (5 home matches in total) Penryn Athletic v Dobwalls Penzance v Plymstock United to take over Groundsman Mike Prisk’s jobs Porthleven v Elburton Villa after he has his knee operation on 11th April Wadebridge Town v Plymouth Marjon

The Seagulls made a midweek trip to North Cornwall for a floodlit encounter with The Bridgers, the original match scheduled for a Saturday in November having been postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. The hosts were looking for the points to pull away from the relegation zone after a mixed season of results, while the visitors were looking for their first win for two months. Missing from Mousehole’s squad were Lewis Caspall, Billy Curtis, Josh Otto, Nathan Goodspeed, Ashley Smeeth and Matt Howes, while Matt McIlroy made a first start up front, Tyler Tonkin returned, and Luke Johnson (again), JJ Simmonds and Joe Davies all filled defensive vacancies in unaccustomed positions.

On a wet pitch and in driving rain, Wadebridge came out on top as Mousehole conceded four goals for the second consecutive match. On Saturday they had made newly-crowned champions Sticker work hard for their 4-1 win, but here Wadebridge were gifted all four goals through avoidable defensive mistakes.

Sam Cooper for the home side had already stabbed over a chance from six yards after 11 minutes, but he went on to get the first of a hat-trick on 19 when he lobbed into the far corner after a miskick in the centre of Mousehole’s defence. Caleb Marsden equalised in Mousehole’s first serious attack five minutes later, driving home impressively from 18 yards after great work by McIlroy to unsettle the defenders.

Three minutes later Wadebridge were presented with a second goal when Chris Brown prodded in from close range after a failure to clear the ball on the left. And only another four minutes had gone by when Marsden and McIlroy again caused uncertainty in the centre of Wadebridge’s defence, with McIlroy unleashing a fierce left-foot shot from the edge of the box low inside the post for 2-2 on 31 minutes.

Having done all the hard work and scored two great goals, Mousehole then left Cooper completely unmarked from a corner in the 37th minute, and he nodded Wadebridge back into a 3-2 lead with a straightforward header past three defenders into the net. Back came Mousehole with two good chances to equalise before half time, Marsden glancing McIlroy’s cross wide and Tyler Tonkin racing clear from half- way on to Kevin Lawrence’s defence-splitting pass only for home goalkeeper Ben Hurst to block the shot.

The second half was less eventful, with Wadebridge content to hold on to possession to preserve their 3-2 advantage. However, they came close to increasing their lead after 67 minutes when a free header hit the post and Steve Parker-Billinge scrambled the ball away while picking up a hand injury in the process.

Sixteen-year old substitute Ben Chapman came on for a promising last 15 minutes. Mousehole were at that point looking likely to grab an equaliser and possibly go on to win the match. But a mis-controlled pass in defence led to Cooper accepting the simplest of chances for his hat-trick, and his 18th league goal of the season, for 4-2 in the 83rd minute. Another 16-year old Will Trenoweth came on for the final few minutes also for a taste of first team action.

Mousehole remain in sixth place on 41 points, with St Dennis one point behind from the same number of games. Wadebridge’s win lifts them up to the relative comfort of sixth-bottom position with four games left.

MOUSEHOLE RESERVES 0-2 TROON TRELAWNY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SATURDAY 25TH MARCH 2017 AT TRUNGLE PARC

SEAGULLS LOSE OUT TO RELEGATION RIVALS

With both Mousehole and Troon perilously placed near the foot of the table, both teams came into this proverbial ‘six-pointer’ with a ‘must-win’ attitude. But it was the visitors who deservedly claimed the precious points with a goal in each half to give them some breathing space for the time being and leave The Seagulls needing to gain points from their remaining four games.

Mousehole were on the back foot from the start of the game as the visitors showed great determination and were first to everything. Troon went ahead in the 20th minute, taking advantage of a couple of missed tackles to run in from the left and score inside the near post.

The Seagulls thought they had equalised on 40 minutes when centre-back Matty Williams was the first to rise to a free kick and head the ball in, only for the referee to disallow the goal for a push.

Mousehole’s defence was under constant pressure in the first half, with the strikers unable to get hold of the ball up front and the ball frequently being returned.

Troon doubled their lead in the 60th minute when a couple of one-twos split the defence and the ball was slotted home.

Despite the efforts of the rapidly improving youngster Ben Chapman, the better team won on the day.

Mousehole now have 19 points from 22 games, with three of their remaining four fixtures against teams currently in 4th, 5th and 6th position in the table. The fixtures are: 8th April away at Pendeen Rovers (2pm), 22nd April away at Penryn Athletic, 29th April home against Camborne School of Mines and 6th May home against Wendron United.

Last Saturday’s visitors Troon, now with 22 points from 23 games, are still in the frame to be relegated alongside bottom club Threemilestone, as they have a difficult last three games of the season – away to both joint leaders Mawnan and Lizard Argyle, and home to Pendeen Rovers - and they currently have a 10-goal worse goal difference than Mousehole.

Mousehole Reserves: Adam Robathan, Kyle Bickmore, Matty Williams, Harry Tonkin, Tom Hooper (captain), Jak Hughes, Chez Jeffrey's, Billy Edwards, Ryan Ellis, Ben Chapman, Jamie Simons.

Substitutes: Will Trenoweth (for Jak Hughes, 20), Ross Bryant (for Matty Williams, 46), Tom George (for Jamie Simons, 80).

Mousehole continued to make chances on the break, but the third goal had to wait until near the end of the game, when Jo Barker ran down the right to pull a cross back which eluded Sophie Wilson and Lizzie Thacker but arrived at the feet of left back Tamara de Silva who without a second thought struck the ball with her weaker right foot to sail over the keepers head and notch her first Seagulls goal. Jo Barker then almost made it 4-0 when she hit the post. TODAY’S QUIZ QUESTION:

Outgoing champions Mousehole faced a Sticker side who were crowned title winners the previous week and are unbeaten in the league this season. As a measure of how much things have changed for The Seagulls, their team sheet included only one player from the squad that ended last season in trophy-winning style. And that was player-manager-goalkeeper Steve Parker Billinge, who has faced a huge challenge since taking over on 2nd January in assembling a squad and fielding a match-day team capable of competing at this level.

On the day, The Seagulls were without the unavailable Billy Curtis (captain), Lewis Caspall, Kevin Lawrence and Tyler Tonkin, while Matt Howes was absent with a season-ending injury. Joe Davies was drafted in at left back, Ashley Smeeth made his first start as striker since his recent arrival from Illogan, Luke Johnson played in an unaccustomed centre-back role as well as wearing the captain’s armband for the first time, and Matt McIlroy was the only named substitute having signed from Penzance during the week.

The Mousehole team formed a guard of honour as the home side entered the field of play in recognition of their exceptional achievement. Sticker had dedicated the match to the memory of The Seagulls’ former club secretary Annie Tonkin, who died earlier this year having been a longstanding friend of Bill Avery of Sticker AFC, and a minute’s silence preceded the kick off.

On a bright sunny afternoon , the game unfolded in line with the form book, Sticker controlling possession and missing a couple of early chances before taking the lead in the 11th minute when Matt Lloyd’s left-sided pass across goal gave Jack Bowyer a simple tap in. The same player, who is way ahead in the division’s goalscoring charts, was at it again on 19 minutes with a sharp shot into the corner from the edge of the box.

Mousehole posed few threats in the first half, though Lee Robinson came close with an effort past the post. At only 2-0 down the visitors came out after the interval intent on getting back into the game, but expectations were dashed only 40 seconds into the second half when Matt Lloyd used his height to head in Sticker’s third.

From then on Mousehole played their best football of the match, with the inspirational Luke Johnson bringing the ball out of defence in a tremendous 70-yard run past several opponents to shoot just wide from the edge of the box on 48 minutes. Three minutes later Lee Robinson fired in an excellent 25-yard drive under the bar to restore some hope at 3-1, and shortly afterwards Matt McIlroy, on as a 50th minute substitute, came close after muscling his way through the centre of the defence.

Bowyer was denied his hat-trick on 84 minutes after a mistimed tackle gave him the opportunity from the resultant penalty, with Steve Parker-Billinge beating out his spot-kick, but two minutes later Sticker made the game safe as they progressed towards a record-breaking unbeaten season, when substitute Callum Kenny, a recent acquisition from St Austell, had an angled shot deflected inside the near post.

Despite defeat, Mousehole can take credit for competing wholeheartedly against opponents who will play in

the Premier Division next season. Looking for a first win since the end of January, Mousehole picked up their fifth draw in the last ten league matches in an evenly contested game against a Liskeard team who were on a good run of form and boasting an impressive away record having gained six of their nine wins on their travels.

The Seagulls had the experienced Calron Hall in central defence again and new signing Ashley Smeeth from Illogan on a strong substitutes’ bench.

The home side started the game brightly with crisp attacking football and went into the lead after 7 minutes when Kevin Lawrence was fouled in the area when in on goal and Luke Johnson drove in the penalty for his second goal in consecutive matches since returning after a 5-month injury absence.

The visitors should have equalised ten minutes later but Denham Guild miskicked in front of goal from a right-wing cross. But on 23 minutes Gallam McGee capitalised on a mistake at the back to score with ease and make it 1-1.

In an entertaining second half, both sides went out for the win and created the chances to claim the three points, but in the end it was the two goalkeepers that kept their side in the game.

Mousehole had the better of the opening period after the break, Luke Johnson having a goalbound shot blocked by the outstretched leg of defender Adam King after a typical surging run in the 54th minute, and shortly afterwards Lee Robinson fired in a 20-yard shot which was acrobatically tipped over by Martin Piper in the Liskeard goal.

Piper then had a lucky escape after appearing to let a through ball slip from his grasp to enable Kevin Lawrence to touch home, but Mousehole’s goal celebrations were cut short when referee Mark Hosking ruled that the ball had been kicked out of the ‘keeper’s hands.

Liskeard came back into the game in the last quarter, finishing the game the stronger and showing signs of their good away form. Steve Parker-Billinge had to be at his best with a smart diving save from a close range shot, and in the last five minutes Guild again missed a clear-cut chance when he side footed a low cross wide with the goal at his mercy.

16 21 NOTES ABOUT BUDE TOWN

The Seasiders currently occupy 16th place in the 18-club West Division, with 30 points from 30 games.

They have won 9 league games this season - at home against Liskeard, Illogan, Millbrook, Vospers, Plymstock, Holsworthy and St Dennis, and away at Plymouth Marjon and (last Saturday) Vospers.

Some of these have been high-scoring wins: 6-2 against Liskeard, 6-3 against Plymstock, 6-0 against St Dennis and 5-0 (away) against Vospers, and as a result they have the best goals-for tally (56) in the bottom-5.

Bude have four games left (one at home and three away, including today) to get the points to finish above the bottom two and avoid the potential risk of relegation to the East Cornwall Premier League. The games are: home and away against Mousehole, away at Holsworthy on Good Friday and away at Wendron on 6th May.

Mousehole’s return match at Broadclose Park in four weeks’ time will therefore be one of Bude’s most crucial 90 minutes of the season!

Earlier in the season The Seasiders suffered a points deduction as a penalty for failing to fulfil an away league fixture, and this might yet have a significant bearing on the final placings.

Last season’s top scorer Billy Hopcroft, who also won the West Division ‘Golden Boot’ award with a tremendous goalscoring last few weeks of the season to overtake our own Bradley Wills, has returned to the club after signing for Premier Division Bodmin Town in the summer, and he recorded a hat-trick in last week’s 5-0 win away at bottom club Vospers. Brother Harry has also returned after a spell at local rivals Holsworthy.

Bude’s average home attendance of 77 owes a lot to the astounding 277 who watched the local derby win (1-0) over Holsworthy on Boxing Day - by far the biggest attendance in the West Division so far this season. By comparison, Mousehole’s average is 74 with a high of 96 (but the Good Friday fixture against Penzance may change that somewhat).

Up until 2012/13 Bude Town were members of the East Cornwall Premier League, in which they finished second to qualify for the SWP West Division for the 2013/14 season. During their three completed seasons since then they have improved from an initial 13th place to two consecutive 8th finishes, with last year their best so far with 16 wins and 84 goals. 20 17
