Tim Richardson: Chairman’s Welcome

A warm Trungle Parc welcome to you all for this morning’s much-anticipated local derby against Penzance, and to all our ex-Seagulls players - I look forward to a drink or two with them after the match. Today we are collecting and donating for a local cause very dear to our hearts - the RNLI Penlee Lifeboat Station Appeal - and hope it will help them towards their target. RNLI reps in- cluding crew members will be here today, so do take the opportunity to have a chat with them, and most importantly give them a donation - every little bit helps (but so do big bits!). Penzance have recovered somewhat since their low point at Christmas, and it looks as though it’s now in their own hands to get to a position of safety (more on page 17). However, they can’t expect any sympathy or charity from us on the field today! Next season could be interesting if Penzance escape the drop and Ludgvan come up - some excellent local derbies, but also competition for players, I guess. As Steve says on page 5, we’ve become the ‘draw specialists’, with 7 in the last 12 league matches. Most of those games could have gone either way, so credit is due to the rebuilt squad for getting a point (and maybe turn draws into wins in the last part of the season?). At present we’re 7th in the table - which com- pares well, in the circumstances, with the 5th position at the start of January - but with all clubs having played a different number of games, we could finish the season there, or slightly higher, or even lower. On to other matters: THIS SEASON’S WEST DIVISION CLUBS Commiserations to Josh Otto for losing narrowly in the Cornwall team in the national youth cup final two Grounds, postcodes & distances (from Trungle Parc) weeks ago. Reports of the match show what a good game he had in defence.

The Draw Specialists!! This is fast becoming our new nickname, having drawn 7 of our last 12 games. At this point last season, we would have seen this as a disappointment, but with the change in squad and the constant improvement of the promoted Reserve team players now establishing themselves within the First team squad, we are still picking up points, rebuilding the squad, learning all the time, and taking positives out of every weekend.

This week is the game that has been the talk of the West for the whole of the calendar year: the visit of our nearest neighbours Penzance. I would like to welcome Bryn, his squad and their committee to the club and I look forward to having a beer in the bar to chat over the game afterwards. We also welcome a few ex-Mousehole players and I hope they all get a great reception. There should be a bumper crowd, to watch a well-contested 90 minutes of fast-paced, passionate local football.

Dobwalls 2-2. It’s always a difficult place to go to and last Saturday was no exception. It was a red hot day, in which we took a trim squad of 13. Both teams started brightly, in which Dobwalls saw a shot blazed over the bar early on. We created lots of chances in the first half, but failed to score and ended up going in at half time 0-0, although we were moving the ball quickly and had the better of the Dobwalls defence. Turning round and going uphill, with the wind in the second half seemed to suit both teams. It gave us a lot more joy out wide with Josh and Connor having more space to run into. Lewis had a cheeky little finish from the edge of the 6 yard box to give us the lead. The disappointing thing was a couple of defensive errors which cost us again, both goals really coming from long balls. We could have conceded a third, but fortunately I manged to save a poor penalty. There were lots of chances at both ends in the last 10 minutes. Thankfully, after moving Jonno further forward into his usual attacking role, his shot on goal did a ricochet off the post and goalkeeper into the back of the net. 2-2 was probably a fair result on the day. Again there are positives to take from it - we learnt a bit more about our squad and the determination to get ourselves back into the game.

Bude 1-1. A fortnight ago we hosted one of our furthest league opponents of the season, who seem a different side with the return of Billy Hopcroft, and always looked menacing going forward. With no Reserves’ game, Adam Robathan came in as ‘keeper to allow me to do my job in the traditional way from the dug-out. For their goal, we allowed Billy a little too much space, and he smashed the ball in off the post from a tight angle. Once more, we created chances throughout the game, but until the last 10 minutes failed to put one away. Chasing the game, we brought off Nathan and put Ashley up front with Matt, and with almost his first touch he got the goal we needed to get us back in the game. Again there were chances at both ends to win the match, but some great defending and goalkeeping saved us from conceding a second and earned us a point.

Today, we have some live music entertainment after the game and a collection for the Penlee Lifeboat Station, so please dig deep and help a great local cause.

Cheers, SPB 32 05

MOUSEHOLE FIRST TEAM: LAST MATCH

DOBWALLS 2-2 MOUSEHOLE / SATURDAY 8TH APRIL / LANTOOM PARK

Mousehole secured another point from their 7th draw in the last 12 league matches since early January, to cling on to seventh place in the table with six games left to play in a campaign disrupted by the departure of a total of nine players in mid-season.

The Seagulls welcomed back Josh Otto after his starring role for Cornwall under-18s in the national youth cup final the previous Saturday, but were without unavailable midfielders Kevin Lawrence and Tyler Tonkin, while Jason Simmonds and Nathan Goodspeed dropped down to the Reserves to help in their relegation battle.

Chances came and went for both sides in an evenly contested encounter played in hot sunny conditions. Dobwalls came close in the opening few minutes, with a shot blocked and another cleared off the line. Mousehole replied with Matt McIlroy, Lewis Caspall and Connor Davey causing problems for the home defence, while Ashly Smeeth placed a lob on to the top of the net and shortly afterwards headed over from Lewis Caspall’s free kick.

Mousehole took the lead in the 54th minute when Matt McIlroy put in a long cross from the left, Ashley Smeeth controlled the ball beyond the far post with his back to goal and with a clever turn passed inside for Lewis Caspall to prod over the line.

The lead lasted only seven minutes as Ryan Oxley, latching on to a high ball misjudged in the centre of the defence, hit the far post with a lob and was first to the rebound to score into the opposite corner. And five minutes later Dobwalls took the lead when another mistake let in the powerful Sam Stockman for a one-on-one chance which he side-footed past Steve Parker-Billinge. With the home side in the ascendancy they had a great chance to go into a 3-1 lead on 68 minutes when Billy Curtis fouled Stockman but SPB made a diving save from Oxley’s penalty kick.

In an eventful last quarter-hour, home goalkeeper Jamie Blatchford superbly tipped over Ashley Smeeth’s goalbound header on 75 minutes after an accurate Lewis Caspall cross, but as Mousehole pressed for an equaliser they were nearly punished from a Dobwalls breakaway on 80 with a shot just clearing the crossbar. Luke Johnson was moved forward from defence and duly equalised in the 83rd minute with a fierce drive from the edge of the box that struck the post and ricocheted in off Blatchford. Joe Davies on as a substitute almost grabbed a winner with a drive inches over as The Seagulls finished the game in attacking style. Then in the last minute of normal time, after Mousehole had been on the wrong end of several borderline decisions, Matt McIlroy lost patience with assistant referee Andrew Tapper and was sent off for his comments. Added time saw both sides close to a decider, with Luke Johnson nearly on the end of a thrilling defence-splitting move between Josh Otto and Lewis Caspall.

Mousehole: Steve Parker-Billinge, Josh Otto, Luke Nowell, Billy Curtis (captain), Luke Johnson, Connor Davey, Lee Robinson, Caleb Marsden, Lewis Caspall, Ashley Smeeth, Matt McIlroy. Substitutes: Joe Davies (for Ashley Smeeth, 78), Jamie Simons Scorers: Mousehole – Lewis Caspall (54), Luke Johnson (83). Dobwalls – Ryan Oxley (61), Sam Stockman (66).

Referee: Stuart Kane. Attendance: 45.

MOUSEHOLE FIRST TEAM: TWO WEEKS AGO MOUSEHOLE 1-1 BUDE TOWN / SATURDAY 1ST APRIL / AT TRUNGLE PARC

Mousehole came into the match with five draws and only one win in their previous ten league matches and had to battle for a point against a Bude team needing the points to keep alive their chances of finishing the season above the relegation places.

In the end, both sides created enough chances to win the match, but Bude now have only three games left (their only home match being the return fixture with Mousehole on 29th April) and could be overtaken by Penzance, whereas the draw keeps Mousehole, with seven games to play, in sixth place just ahead of a cluster of mid-table clubs.

The Seagulls’ starting line-up was without Josh Otto, on duty with Cornwall in the national youth cup final, goalkeeper/player-manager Steve Parker-Billinge with a hand injury, and holidaying captain Billy Curtis. Adam Robathan deputised in goal, Lewis Caspall was available on the day and Matt McIlroy made his home debut. The visitors had in their side Billy Hopcroft, the Division’s runaway leading goalscorer last season, who returned from a spell at Premier Division Bodmin Town a few weeks ago.

Bude dominated the opening ten minutes, with Adam Robathan having to be alert to a through ball and the visitors mis-kicking a low cross from close in. After a slow start, Mousehole imposed themselves on the half-hour mark with efforts from Lewis Caspall (twice), Matt McIlroy and Tyler Tonkin being saved or blocked, only for Bude’s tactics of exploiting danger-man Billy Hopcroft’s pace on the right to pay off in the 36th minute when he created space for himself for an angled drive off the post for 0-1. Tyler Tonkin almost got Mousehole back into the game near half-time with a tremendous shot from the edge of the box that beat goalkeeper Gary Dinshaw but came back off the crossbar.

In the first minute of the second period Mousehole came close to an equaliser when Matt McIlroy hit the far post with one of his ‘trademark’ left-footers, and Lewis Caspall hit the same post after a great dribble on the right after 64. However, Bude, always a threat with quick breaks, could have made it 0-2 on 68 minutes when Billy Hopcroft took the ball round the advancing Adam Robathan but in the process of shooting into an empty net was thwarted by a superb tackle by Luke Johnson. Robathan made a crucial save shortly afterwards to keep the home side in the game, and the equaliser arrived on 81 minutes when Ashley Smeeth, on as a substitute for only three minutes, got in front of his marker to guide a header into the corner from Tyler Tonkin’s well-directed cross.

This prompted an action-packed last few minutes, with substitute Caleb Marsden put in the clear on 84 by Ashley Smeeth but firing over, while in the last two minutes Jamie Robinson halted a dangerous Bude attack and Adam Robathan came off best in a one- on-one with Billy Hopcroft.

THE RESERVES’ LAST MATCH: PENDEEN ROVERS 4-2 MOUSEHOLE RESERVES / SATURDAY 8TH APRIL / TRELAWNY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION / AT BORLAISE PARK

This was a well-contested local derby played in a strong wind, with both teams needing points - Pendeen looking for promotion to the , and Mousehole striving to pull away from the relegation trapdoor.

Mousehole had midfielder Nathan Goodspeed in the starting line-up after a promising run of games in the First team, striker Tyler Lea returned after suspension and the team included three 16-year olds. Pendeen fielded a strong and experienced team including those with Combination experience.

The home side took the lead after 15 minutes, and capitalised on a short back pass to go 2-0 up shortly afterwards, but Mousehole came close when Anthony Nicholas took the ball round the ‘keeper but hit the side netting from a tight angle.

Pendeen scored to make it 3-0 straight after the half-time break with a volley from a right wing cross, and this prompted The Seagulls to step up a gear. They soon got a goal back when Tyler Lea slotted home after rounding the ‘keeper following a good one-two with Anthony Nicholas. And it became 3-2 with Jamie Thomas outwitted the centre half and struck a great drive into the bottom corner.

Mousehole were on top for the rest of the match, pressing their opponents all over the field, with Goodspeed’s running and tackling a particular feature, but it was Pendeen who got the decisive next goal in the 90th minute from a possible offside position.

Mousehole: Adam Robathan, Billy Edwards, Will Trenoweth, Harry Tonkin, Tom Hooper (captain), Ben Chapman, Nathan Goodspeed, Jamie Thomas, Ryan Ellis, Tyler Lea, Anthony Nicholas

Substitutes: Jak Hughes (for Jamie Thomas, 70), Ross Bryant (for Ryan Ellis, 60), Tom George (for Tyler Lea, 85)

Harry Tonkin’s team now have three matches remaining, the next one being on 22nd April away at Penryn Athletic.

Then follow two home matches – a re-arranged fixture on Wednesday 26th April against promotion-seeking Wendron United (6.30pm kick off), and finally Saturday 29th April against Camborne School of Mines (2.30).

The Easter weekend fixtures are on page 31 Source: SWP League website 14 23 MOUSEHOLE WOMEN’S LAST MATCH: HELSTON LADIES 3-3 MOUSEHOLE WOMEN / SUNDAY 9TH APRIL / CORNWALL WOMEN’S LEAGUE / AT KELLAWY PARK This was a great game between the teams occupying third and fourth place in the table. Mousehole had lost the home league game 4-2 in November but came out on top with a 6-2 win in the Cornwall Women’s Cup quarter-final in February. The Seagulls were without Lizzie Thacker and Tamara de Silva, so Carly Jacka filled in at left back with Lena Mannon going on to the wing. It took Mousehole a little time to cope with the hard surface and high bounce of the ball, and Helston took an early lead after a defensive mix- up. The visitors responded by upping their game and although on top for most of the half they could not find the ‘killer touch’ in front of goal. Mousehole unluckily went 2-0 down late in the first half, when a corner eluded the front players and defected just over the line via a defender. Just before half time Jo Barker left the field after a kick on the ankle, and shortly afterwards the injured Megan Davison had to be stretchered off and took no further part in the game. In the second half, Mousehole had a penalty appeal turned down following a clash between Sophie Wilson and a Helston defender, but then the returning Jo Barker earned a definite penalty when she was brought down by the ‘keeper after running on to Lyndsey Mayers’ long goal kick, and Claire Hitchens Todd fired the spot kick home. Helston increased the lead, but another Lyndsey Mayers long ball put Jo Barker through for 3-2. Mousehole were now on the front foot and came close to a goal when a clearance from a corner led to Jo Barker crossing from the byeline only for Katie Barker’s shot to find the side netting. But a short while afterwards Katie Barker did find the back of the net, cutting in off the left and striking with her right foot across the keeper inside the far post. Mousehole dominated the last 15 minutes but there were no more goals. Mousehole Women: Lyndsey Mayers, Flo Davies Kirsop, Megan Davison, Lyndsey Williams (captain), Carly Jacka, Katie Barker, Claire Hitchens Todd, Sophie Wilson, Lucy Brown, Lena Mannon, Jo Barker Substitutes: Stacey George, Scarlett Clouter Mousehole Women’s last-but-one fixture of the season is on Sunday 23rd April at table-topping St Agnes, who snatched a winner in the 94th minute at Trungle Parc on April 2nd *. 16 21 NOTES ABOUT PENZANCE

Today’s local derby between The Seagulls and The Magpies has added interest as Penzance have on their books several ex-Mousehole players. Five of these - Wayne Quinn, Mark Vercesi, Liam Andrew, Wade Brown and Frazer Cadman were first-choice starters for Mousehole until January, and in addition Karl Turner featured in a handful of games before Christmas, as did Matt Laithwaite earlier in the season. Dom Angove, Mousehole’s reserve team goalkeeper last season, joined the Penlee Park outfit in the summer and has recently earned himself a regular place in the starting line-up, while Ryan Andrew is also an ex-Seagull. Because of injury, team selection or unavailability, not all these nine are likely to be included in today’s Penzance squad.

In the meantime four players have gone in the opposite direction - Connor Davey, Tyler Tonkin, Joe Davies and most recently Matt McIlroy.

In the 10 games played since early January, when Penzance were bottom of the league, their new-look side have had 4 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats, scoring 17 goals and also conceding 17, while picking up 15 points from a possible 30. Their playing record during this same period is better than Mousehole’s, who have won 1, drawn 7 and lost 4 from 12 league games, gaining 10 points out of 36.

Recent results have enabled Penzance to leapfrog Vospers Oak Villa and they are now in second-bottom place, 8 points above Vospers with an 8-goal advantage, both teams having 5 games left. The Magpies are 6 points behind 16th-place Bude Town with two games in hand but a much worse goal difference.

The League’s rules provide for up to two teams to be relegated from the West Division, but the SWPL has recently announced its provisional position that only one team is likely to go down this season (this is because only one promotion applicant may be eligible from the various feeder leagues - and that is likely to be Ludgvan). This in turn appears to mean that Vospers could be the most likely team to be relegated while all other clubs in the ‘drop zone’, including Penzance, either escape or are reprieved.

In the Boxing Day fixture Mousehole won 6-0 at Penlee Park with goals from Mark Vercesi (3), Kevin Lawrence, Tim Nixon and Charlie Young in front of a crowd of 182, and five days later Penzance lost again heavily 7-1 at Penryn Athletic, in what proved to be manager John Dent’s last game in charge. New manager Bryn Wheeler’s appointment was initially for the last 15 games of this campaign, but since then it has been extended until the end of next season.

Penzance’s last match was a 3-1 defeat at Illogan last Saturday. After today, they have one home game left - against Penryn Athletic - and three away matches - at Plymstock, Liskeard and champions Sticker.

After coming 16th in the last year of the South Western League, Penzance joined the new SWPL West Division in 2007/08, finishing 11/16 in the first season and as champions in the following year, 2008/09. After promotion to the Premier Division they were 7th, 9th, 17th and 19th (bottom) in 2012/13, a season in which they were relegated back to the West Division having lost 34 out of 36 matches, scoring 22 goals and conceding 166. The three completed seasons since then have see them finish 14/16 twice and last year 10/17.
